Anthony! Great to find you on here. Everyone-(including random anonymous trolls)-Anthony is a great player who I've known for over 30 years. If he can sustain a career in the Music Business for a quarter of a century clearly he knows what he's doing. Anthony, you were a Bad Boy 30 years ago, and you're a Bad Boy now! Kudos, sir!
@MrJohhncrabcake too bad you didn't listen to the video, or maybe you just didn't comprehend what he was saying. His day job is musical director on a cruise line. This man has incredible musical skills and ability. What's your day job? I'm sure it's not playing music for a living,

@professor117 Yeah, uh, don't think I'll be loosing any gigs to your buddy prof. None of the truly qualified non-rock bassists ever used a "back flick" technique to play rapidly. Only two rock players come to mind on electric and they are Geddy Lee and Jack Bruce. Also on the acoustic is the legendary Dave Holland but not only does he play upright, he makes no attempt to play "virtuosic" lines. His virtuosity is in his musicianship and ability to HEAR quickly. All 3 use only the i .
No, Stanley can pluck that fast without doing a "back flick". So can I for that matter. Wooten does that though. Stanley does not. And Stanley plucks the strings a lot harder, which is part of his sound.
dude, your bass is so beutifull..i love it so much, this is one of my dream basses! i have the new 2010 fender usa deluxe jazz, in natural with black block inlays
i've been playing bass for 25 years and just this past year figured out this back and forth picking and as usual it took me 25 years to change my way... and it has opened up so much playing... this video here S. C. Secrets is great and this guy made this tip clear and without a soap opera...thanks for the great and helpful and reasuring video...although could have used it about a couple decades ago
This guy has Stanley Clarks technique a little bit wrong....when he is doing the finger style licks the sound has no definition and is there one things Stanley has is super note definition.
@klinkepeter Yep, have to agree with you there bro. Never heard ANYONE play with that tech. It sucks! Sounds like some kid in a store trying to show off and sucking!
There is a Weckl lick on one of his solo CDs that I never could figure out. Drove me nuts. I thought he was using thumb and two fingers to generate fast triplets. It's possible to use that technique but this is far easier...Now I know.
Thanks a bunch...been playing bass for over four decades and never even considered doing this.
The back stroke is cool. It was one of the first instinctual things I did when I picked up the Bass. I didn't know how to properly play, so to play fast that's what I did. It's cool to see that someone like Stanley Clarke also does this.
My guess is it comes from his angled right hand double bass-like attack.
I've got no idea what your talking about, sir. He always has been playing a double-bass. The technique develops quite naturally when exchanging the instruments - actually, if you ever get to see any of his double-bass live shows, you'll see how weird and awkward his techniques look when in reality: those are real double-bass playing techniques..
Hi Gang, Thanks! Despite the buzzing "A" string, the tone is from Passive J bass bartolinis, Sadowsky outboard preamp, Boss Compressor/Enhancer, SWR Super Redhead amp and DnR handmade roundwound strings.
Yea i know, the guitar went through an incident with a careless tech (knocked over) minutes before this was shot. Lucky this is not an audition or a record. Just a demonstration of the technique.
is that a jay turser bass if so i have the same one

I see a lot of "bassists" here complaining but they can't bring anything decent for their generation.

Sounds like a drop D tuning. Is the tuning D, A, D, G?
Bassplayingboy 3 years ago
Tuning is regular old 4ths with an E string. Back in the day 5 string was not as popular as it currently is. Stanley also had a piccolo bass

btw, what type camera are you using? web or digital video and then simply downloading to the computer?

Sony TRV22 then to computer, Edit in Vegas Video. I do wish youtube would allow upload of FLV files, then one could predict the end quality.
