  • Several decades ago, I wrote a short letter to Richard Feynman inquiring as to what would happen if you stop a toy gyroscope from rotating on its stand, i.e. it precesses around on its stand. Surprisingly, he actually answered me by sending back my note-diagram with corrections. Answer: If you stop the precession, the gyroscope will drop like a rock ... as it must, by Newtonian physics. No gyroscopic motion can be used for propulsion. All relevant vectors do cancel out.

  • @DiscipleOfOne1 I understand that just fine that doesn't mean it is a better system or that it really works. The idea is a good one and used to work great; not so much any more. The patent system has become a war and only serves as a means of mutual self destruction.

  • Idealized version of WHAT concept? Interlaced gyros -OK, great, is that supposed to be unique? Or is there some function you want to do with them?

    Put this in operation and any vehicle would be locked into a single line of motion, resisting pitch, yaw or roll. Been done. So what else is this supposed to do?

  • Think about it, if UFOs do exist perhaps the outer ring of it is a gyroscope which is spinning so fast, to the naked eye it looks as though it is not moving at all! I believe you need 3 gyroscopes working in tandem to defeat gravity & this design just might be the answer? Only thing difference between the gyroscopes shown in this video & my theory is that my gyroscope set up would be powered using electromagnetism! Though don’t quote me on that as im far from being an expert! haha

  • @actrapide Yes, you are far from being an expert. Nothing about gyroscopes is mysterious to physicists and nothing about them permits any sort of propulsion. A gyroscope doesn't defy gravity when it seemingly balances off center. Its momentum effectively just transfers its weight to the fulcrum.

  • I know this will make me sound like a complete crack pot lol but I have had this exact device in my head for close on 15 years now! Why..well I was once thinking about what might power a flying saucer (UFO) of all things haha to give it its extreme speed & manoeuvrability! I had one of those eureka moments & it came to me in an instant! A UFOs must be powered by not 1 but 3 gyroscopes which all work together &/or against each other to defeat gravity & gain extreme propulsion in any direction!...

  • @actrapide Not possible. Just because you don't understand how gyroscopes work doesn't mean physicists (or even moderately educated people, like myself) don't either. Gyroscopes can make an object angularly stable, but can not magically generate either power or propulsion.

Even non-physicists who have a rudimentary education in physics (like myself) know. 2 or more perpendicular gyroscopes working in tandem will create resistance to torsion in all axes. It won't generate any propulsion. And your comment about the "3 major factors" of the universe is laughably ignorant. Study physics before trying to argue about it.

Heat, temperature, force, pressure, energy, power, current, voltage, electricity, magnetism, momentum, thrust, leverage, torsion, compression, and tension. These are basic engineering concepts, I can define them all, accurately, and explain the relationships between them. But you think there are 3 forces in the universe gravity, magnetism, and gyroscopic force. HA! A first year physics student knows better.

  • it will stabilize a craft in a frictionless environment but there's a Newtonian law that prevents it from moving anything that you might have overlooked.

  • how will you stop the resulting magnetic fields from each conducting wire from interfering with the other rotors consequently inside the outer most ring? on top of that you are assuming that the high speed of the rotors also will not create a feed back system upon each other due to their own magnetic fields produced by said magnets attached to the rings. i would advise looking back into the origin of electromagnetic theory before assuming Newtonian physic holds the key to "free" inertial systems

  • getting a patent for a device means literally nothing in regards to its potential for actually doing what it is claimed to do. Had the patent examiner actually been literate in high school level physics a patent would have never been issued. What you did manage to do a pretty nifty job of is replicating the device from contact. All you need is jodi foster to sign on and you can go explore the galaxy. Pseudo Science is always a terrible idea.

  • Very nice construction. I have had a similar idea rolling around in my head for years. I way thinking of using magnets or electromagnets for propulsion of the rings. I never thought of fixed ring positions though. I hope you can get a physical model together. Good luck and nice work

  • Can't model with vector analysis? Of course you can. This won't do anything except burn up energy and not want to move. It doesn't convert any of its rotational inertia into a linear motion.

  • @cdoftx: Will it not precess depending on where you put it on Earth, thereby potentially being capable of grabbing a component of Earth's rotational energy and providing torque for relevant drives? This looks like a very low-revving motor in that sense.

  • @KhurrumAsif No, the Earth's movement takes place on such large scales that its impact couldn't overcome friction. Think of how spinning one ring would precess.  Then imagine how two rings would precess when combined. Then imagine how adding a third spinning ring would effect the device. With the device embedded in a cube with all axes aligned, the device would precess around two of the cube's opposing vertices; depending on which way the rings are spinning.

Thought experiment for your comment: a very large ring / disc (say 100 miles in diameter) spinning at high speed and located at the equator on an axis fixed in the direction of the Earth's rotation. Could this be seen as a precession drive that lets us grab some of Earth's angular momentum energy? Also, if driven actively could this speed up the Earth's spin? Always wondered about gyroscopic phenomena and am glag to find this thread!

  • @KhurrumAsif True, the Earth puts a torque on a disk in that position so it would move if it could overcome friction.  That could harness the Earth's rotational energy or speed it up or slow it down if it was driven.

  • @DoofNoofem Around the turn of the 20th century, the man running the US Patent office said that we may as well close the office. Because... everything that CAN be invented, HAS been invented. That was about 100 years ago. Good thing we kept it open, for all of those foolish patents that would never amount to anything. If history has taught us anything, it should be to never say never, and never say thats "foolish". You never know where or what these foolish ideas may lead to. Seriously.

  • The patent's description rambles on about how science is confused about the Coriolis effect, and implies that this thing will act as an anti-gravity device, and then does not mention any of this in the claims section, where it really matters, and instead just describes 3 concentric, hollow-cored, brush less motors positioned in orthogonal planes. Nothing new or revolutionary. Mostly just an abuse of the Patent format to add 'legitimacy' to a crackpot idea born out of knowing almost enough.

  • Won't work. Nice try and many others have tried similar ideas. The mistake you are making is the same one that Sandy Kidd (Google him) made many years ago. The force you get from Gyros is a turning moment, not a linear force that can be used for propulsion.

  • I would think that the conductivity each ring would cause problems, I suppose it could be balanced out but would require that you insulate the conductive parts from allowing any charge to effect its ring. It suppose it could be balanced by the mass for the conductivity, but I doubt you could mill with that kind of precision. Its an interesting concept.

    Vector analysis can EASILY calculate the effects of these gyros, and the effect is useless and trivial.

  • I do not know how this invention works, but to me it still seems impossible to disprove that precessional acceleration is possible.

    There is a problem with the conservation of momentum when torque is applied on a wheel with angular velocity.... it is as if spinning matter truly creates an anchor into the backround itself.

    You know people, today we say the "vacuum" is filled with energetic particles....

    and for some reason, all our planets spin ; )

  • If he uses superconductors instead of copper bindings and spins the device from the outside by pointing a peta-laser for rotation of the rings powered by fusion and utilizes electrostatic barring for stabilization on each side, then you would have a negative gravity field on the inside of the device, a wormhole. no propulsion. A Time Stop Machine/Fountain of Youth/Immortality Machine.

  • @watchkey The only problem with your theory is currently superconductors need to be cooled, many with liquid nitrogen. If a peta-laser was used it would heat up the superconductors, In otherwords the energy needed not only to power the laser but to cool the laser and the superconductor is far beyond what we will be capable of producing in the near future.(even if they were powered by fusion thats still a lot of energy).

  • to be clear, I wouldn't use those words to describe the phenomena, but taken loosely they are physically justified statements. With a 90 degree split between all three gyroscopes in his apparatus, the issued force would be a multiple of a canonical vector in a 3D cartesian plan (i.e. v=(1,1,1)). It would go up, but it would also go sideways simultaneously. In other words it would go diagonally. This is assuming the horizontal gyroscope is spinning counter-clockwise.

  • @theQuestOfHolyGrail if you spin a gyroscope and hang it sideways off of a string such that the whole system forms something of an L shape, the gyroscope WILL "resist" gravity by diverting its influence and begin to spin around the string maintaining the L shape. Since the gyroscope is already generating a force, gravity's force can but alter the already present force. Hence the concept of gyroscopes "escaping" gravity. Also hence the idea of "resisting" change.

    The gyroscopic effects of rings is the same centered around a common point or not. If they are all connected in a closed- feedback loop, they can be mounted in any orientation respecting the CG of the "vehicle" see Reaction Wheel As for "propulsion", not happening by a long shot. 3d gyros are very difficult to move. This is truly an ANTI-propulsion device.

  • I think this guy just got fed up with nothing to render on his nice new high dynamic range 3d package, why do all basically useless invention inventors talk at great length about trivial things such as the metal density and the bearing position and the brush less motor design, the sad thing is if the designer had given all 3 axis freedom to move he would have made a nice inertial guidance unit, all that been made in reality is a big gyroscope that will cancel itself out and do... nothing. :(

  • Congratulations on a remarkable demonstration of an almost two hundred year old concept... the gyroscope! Though the 3D modeling is quite effective, the title of the video is misleading, as there is no "propulsive" output in this closed inertial system.  As clever as the use of different materials to maintain equal angular momentum at constant speed may be (which may be unique enough to be patentable) there is no way to translate this gyrostat into any sort of propulsion.

    I am working on a similiar concept however I am not using electrical Propulsion. Try reading works by Tesla for a hint if your curious.

    Cant this design be put in a simulated environment (computer) first? It will at least remove the errors that will come out in manufacturing. ie. not being able to machine the thing accurately and having the imperfections throwing off any acutal and meaningful measurements. Cheaper too!

It would have been nice if he had showed us a working model doing whatever it is supposed to do. I think you got something there though, I just don't know what it is. Keep up the good work.

    Ridicule by negative association, I think it's called. What's described here, is the alignment of angular momentum in one direction, to give directed and positive force.

    Angular momentum & inertia may be seen as 2 separate properties of mass, allowing for a net force, conservation laws notwithstanding......
