  • great video, only thing is just wondering how you sealed the holes that you made for the drain pipes? I am building my own 2 wicking beds this weekend and this problem is the only sticking point so far. cheers mate and keep up the good work.

  • Love the future idea of building a narrow bed to take advantage of the over flow water. Thanks for the great tip!

  • Thanks for sharing Grafam. Any update videos? How is it doing? Also I have a question. From what I understand, the water will not wick up through gravel. So when the water level drops a little below the GI mesh, how are you getting the water at the bottom layers up through the gravel layer to your compost? Any info would be much appreciated.

  • Thanks! the info was greatly appreciated! God Bless You and Yours! Keep up the great video's!!

  • G'day Guys

The long pipe is to ensure that the water will cover the whole bed adequately. Yes, I know that water will find it's own level but if we can improve the flow then all the better. Same applies for the overflow pipes... you want more not less. Too few could subject your plants to flooding which would cause some issues.

The wicking principle has little to do with the roots of the plant in the water, and more to do with the surface tension created as water coats the soil crumbs.

  • Hey Grafam, thanks for sharing this. Are the long PVC pipes necessary? If the gravel layer is kept relatively sediment free water should find its level along the length of the bed. Same with the overflow pipes. Also, what is the mechanism by which the water wicks up into the soil. Does the geotextile fabric need to dip into the water somehow, or will the plant roots get through it? Not related to the bed design, but how much light will your bed get during summer being under the eve of the house?

  • great design. esp liked the idea of carpet as liner and will use this idea - thank you for vid. i am thinking of combining worm/wicking bed with square-foot/metre and a predator island - so 4x4 sq-foot design then 1ft band for predator island and worm drum and then another 4x4 etc - don't know if you have any experience or thoughts regarding this design. cheers.
