What I think separates Leona and Mariah in the early years is that Mariah had a very very distinct signature style. Her whistle notes flooooored people and it really caught their attention for a long time. It proved that she was packing something more that made her more than a great vocalist. I think Leona lacks that signature style.

As far as this little "who is better" battle, Mariah in her prime could only be rivaled by Whitney Houston. WHITNEY HOUSTON. Leona today is a great vocalist but some of her vocal nuances bug the crap out of me. I think Mariah displays a great deal more control in her vocals. She also has a better tone to it. It may not be as rich or full as Leona but I think that quality has allowed her to display her range in a much more effective way.

I agree Kathy. Leona Lewis is not even close to the vocal range that Mariah Carey has. Leona and Simon Cowell wishes. In there dreams. She is a papular artist worldwide. Leona needs to hope and pray she will get that far, I doubt she will. Mariah is one of the best selling artists of all time.
