I must admit - bernstein is certainly my favourite beethoven conductor - i always enjoy watching conductors expressions etc throughout any performance and he is without doubt one of the best if not the best
Thank you so much for this! It is my favorite symphony movement by my favorite composer, brought to life through the art of my favorite Maestro. Who could ask for more? I have the CD but have never seen the performance. This is in my favorites and I'm sure I will enjoy it many times in the future!
imo...this is the Perfect tempo for the 2nd movement. after all they are not playing Die Moldau...can anyone really questions latter year passion? this compares to the 77/78 beethoven cycle of Karajan of which i have a recording. SUPERB
to quote my conducting professor, "only beethoven could make a beautiful melody out of 13 straight E's". And he's right -- the simplicity is almost what makes it haunting.
This happens to be one of my most favorite orchestral works. In my HS Music Appreciation class in Lakewood, Ohio, I was fortunate to have a marvelous musician, composer instructor. He had made slides of all the music we were studying, and could point out what we were hearing. I was really taken with the idea Beethoven used to write melodic lines to one set of notes :dah/da/da/dah/dah. Over and over I heard this main theme played in many varieties, and then with new melodies played on top!!!
At 2.12 to 2.15 in this video is that sweat or tears? I think it might be tears- there is something about this song, especially after hearing it in the Kings Speech Movie that can move you to tears.
This piece for me will be forever linked to November 9, 1989 - the day the Berlin Wall fell. How strange such a sad melody can accompany a memory so full of joy...
Don't forget, its a "Allegretto". In this tempo it sounds more sad, maybe quite well for a funeral, but less maestic. And the "non legato" interpretation.... 2th movement of Beethoven 7th symphony is a special music. I think the best performance is Karajan conducting Berliner Philharmoniker.
hello classical music fans, i've written an in-depth analysis and commentary on this movement of beethoven's 7th symphony in my blog, based on this video/performance. see my blog at asiyclassical, wordpress, com .
I thought nothing was better than Eroica #2 movement -- but this is achingly beautiful. Like so many, it makes me feel like crying in a wonderful way. THIS IS A TINY TASTE OF HEAVEN!! How could you want to miss out on it!! Bless God and thank him for BEAUTY!!! And for artists like Leonard Bernstein.
"This is one of the most unremarkable melodies ever written, but it is one of the most famous..everything is so unpredictable yet so right. He struggled & scratched out, saying "I'm only writing the tip of the iceberg of what I feel."..in the sketches you see the crossings, the agony this man went through & what appears in the final finished product, it seems it was phoned in from God." Leonard Bernstein
E AQUI LUDVING VAN BEETHOVEN CON RESPETO LA MAYOR SIMFONIA ESCRITA EN UN MOVIMIENTO YA DESESPERADO Y RENDIDO DE TODA CAUSA DEMOCRATA BEETHOVEN DESARTA Y CONVOCA A UN <DIOS SU CORAZON ARREPENTIDO LA INMUNDICIA QU LLEVO A BEETHOVEN A ESCRIBIR ESTA MUSICA ES EL AUTENTICO PERDON DE DIOS DE ESTE GRAN MAESTRO
Far Away the Greatest version i´ve heard of this movement. Bernstein understand the tempo perfectly here , also the begining the strings have to breathe the way he does !! So Perfect. Bernstein is so musical here. A real genius as always with music!! And what dynamics , and rythm too Wauw. World class conductor and Orchestra.
Bravo. IMO, not many conductors seem to take the time to study and consider Beethoven's metronomic indications for his symphonies. I know it's a controversial topic -- the tempi of Beethoven's work. But I personally love the slower tempo for this movement shown in the video. Bernstein's interpretation kind of reminds me of Solti's version. Just my sorry old personal opinion anyway. lol
@MrsMozart YES! Exactly! The second movement should not be forced! This is one of the finest interpretations I've heard along with Barenboim's and the berliner staatskapelle
Interessante.

Great but i still believe Karajan's conduction with the Berlin Phil is above comparison

the title is wrong, while it does play some parts in A major, it's mostly in A minor
