  • this match with no buildup = My favourite match ever

Orton vs Triple H with over 5 years of buildup = Meh

  • Despite how some people might feel, i'm actually glad that WWE didn't bring back the war games simply because they probably wouldn't have done it any justice. I didn't even like the later versions that WCW did in the late 90s. Nothing will compare to these original Crockett War Games matches.

  • Ohhh the horror of war!!

  • they should have returned this match already and have a stable of 5 guys or 4 guys and a manager again i mean come on not a nexus or corre but something like the horsemen or the dangerous alliance something for the higher purpose

  • WWE dropped the ball by not including this match in the Ric Flair/4 Horsemen DVD.

  • The era of real wrestling and guys who knew how to put on a great match! Unlike the WWE which is nothing more than a soap opera for men.

  • @Warriospwn: No, in January 1991 WCW broke away from what was left of the NWA. If Vince hadn't bought up the WCW video library nothing would have been done with it.

@thalastpoet: Calling Cena a "white guy pretending to be black" is dumb, only because Dusty was doing the same thing. That was the whole idea behind the Akeem the African Dream gimmick given to the One Man Gang in 1988.

BTW, Shithead HBK with his 1001 excuses for not doing a job would have been blacklisted back then.

  • Man I miss those days. The way they put years into rivalries, it wasn't a soap opera like it is today. Character development to point that after a few months you were emotionally invested into someone.

  • wwe dont have NOTHING on this!

  • timless classic and one hell of a match!!!

  • The most realistically violent, horrifying match ever. The ending is absolutely sick.

  • stupid americans, this is not for real,..lol

  • @MegaVboost Who said that it was?

  • Back then, wrestling used to take time and developed unique characters & story lines that stayed in the minds of their fans. It wasn't always about everyone going into the ring and trying to be the better badass with a catchphrase. Matches like this hold more relevance and authenticity than most of the modern day events even with all of their tricks and theatrics. Watching Animal run into that cage to help Rhodes and hearing the crowd lose it still gives me goosebumps 24 years later.

  • great storytelling great psychology...

  • im from va we grew up on nwa best wrestling of all time... AA is the best most under rated.... the man can make u or break u...

  • Greatest Cage Match Of All Times!!!

  • Can someone give me the list of all the wrestlers in this match?

  • @clebo99 ric flair, arn anderson, tully blanchard, and lex lugar on the otherside was the raodworriers hawk and anamal, nikta koloff and dusty roades

  • @clebo99 ric flair, arn anderson, tully blanchard, and lex lugar and manager of james j dillon on the otherside was the raodworriers hawk and anamal, nikta koloff and dusty roades and manager paul ellering

  • even with the bad audio the crowd in going ape shit for everything when they pan wide no one is in there seats And J R is is having a stroke.

  • When the Road Warriors had to modify the Doomsday Device because of the height of the cage you'd think WCW would've realized it needed to be taller. But no it took them until Sid Vicious nearly killed Brian Pillman with a power bomb because Pillman's head hit the cage ceiling before they changed it.

  • Arn Anderson is one of the few men that can make Dusty Rhodes look like a superhero... Just amazing... God Bless Arn

  • @whm3 Dusty was pretty good for a big guy, but I agree with you about Arn. The Enforcer was the best of the 4 Horsemen, and an underrated legend.

  • The first, and best Wargames match....although the Wrestlewar 92 match is close, if not as good.

  • i've watched 4 wargames matches and 3 of those ended when jj dillon was forced to surrender.

  • JJ regrets agreeing to that finish, for sure..

  • 10 people are fucktards

  • @Cowshitbullshit 10 are WWF Fans who don't know anything about real wrestling.

  • @montkv lol naah wwf is awesome bro, those 10 are more like wwe fans between the years 2007 +

  • This is what gave rise to the concept of hell in the cell and the elimination chamber.

  • Gotta love when they say "submission or surrender"..basically saying "give up or give up".

  • Ever notice the heels always win the coin toss?

  • i believe this match was specifically made for the 4 Horsemen.

  • if TNA would just try to be THIS...stick with groups, storylines, etc...long term...let them develope. don't rush them.

so what if they're not #1...there is money for being #2, and they'd have a loyal fan base that Vince didn't get when WCW collapsed.

  • they should bring this back. The Elimination Chamber has nothing compard to this.

  • @Bigdmccabe the issue here is that there are no longtime "gangs" in the biz anymore. The Horsemen had a TON of history with The Superpowers and Warriors.

  • @Bigdmccabe I agree with you. WWE need to bring back wargames match(double cage rings) I missed those kind of matches.

  • This is where Hell in a Cell came from.

  • @1981CrueHead Shawn Michaels has gone on record as saying the 1983 Last Battle Of Atlanta match between Tommy Rich and Buzz Sawyer was where the concept of Hell In A Cell came from....

  • @d820m That's because wwe would not give WCW credit for anything they stole off of them.

  • Damn Precious Paul is in great shape lol! Thanks for this video!! Great!

  • The Old South. I miss it.

  • what you guys don't,I was at the one in Winston-Salem,it was a classic

  • I will put this up against any hell in a cell or elimination chamber match

  • @BigWillMac Absolutely agree. The one from Wrestle War 1992 was even better. War Games was the greatest Gimmick match ever. Just a blast to watch.

  • @BigWillMac Elimination Chamber? Yes. Hell In a Cell? No. As great of a match as this is, it doesn't have shit on Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker at Bad Blood 97.

It is better than the vastly overrated Mick Foley HIAC match though.

  • DUSTY hoo hoo hoo hoo

  • miss these days....todays wrestling is pure garbage!! so fake,an commercial,it's sicking!! only a few ol school guys left, when there gone,i'll never whatch it againe!!...it'll be re-run's for me!! lol

  • Man i thought this was SOOOOOOO Awesome and still is...but man the ending was kinda generic! But this is still classic! WWE should use matches like this and get off the soap opera gimmics

  • reat in peace hawk the wrestling world misses you

  • this was the shit

  • Best War games !

  • BRING BACK WARGAMES

  • @chibineowing they did but ti's in tna now

  • this is the best wrestling match i have ever seen in my life... i saw this live on ppv in chestertown md when i was 10 yrs old....wut happened to the good old days

  • @dbutlersr - I was 11 in Chicago and this i STILL the best match of all time in my opinion.

  • It's not shown here, but when the Road Warriors team came to the ring, the fans chanted 'Let them switch'. Anyone know what that was about?

  • did anyone bother to count the number of ball shots in this match??? LOL

  • This is one of my favorite matches of all time! Before Hell in a Cell and Elimination Chamber; WarGames was the shit!

  • what a great match

  • that shit is too much old

  • Ladies, who do you think was the best looking of the bunch in this match?? Besides the ladies on the outside offcourse lol!! I would think any female watching this would say Lex Luger is top for best looking, and Nikita Koloff the least good looking!!

  • Classic stuff except for the war machine

  • I hated how the audio of this match sucked so bad. Other than that, one of the classic matches of all time

  • Was this the first wargames match? And if not when was it and who was in it?

  • @keh678 Yes, this was the first Wargames match.

  • i miss the golden days of wrestling. i remember turning on the tv when i couldn't sleep and catch Georgia Southern Wrestling. LOL !!! TBS, 6:05-8:05 . good times.

  • Dusty Rhodes best booking ideas:

    1) Wargames

    2) First major televised wrestling supercard, Starrcade

    3) Putting Miz/John Morrison together as a tag team

  • @RSXemperor All good... except for 3.

  • Wasn't this in the Omni in Atlanta on July 4??

The July 31 wargames was in the Orange Bowl and JJ Dillon did not wrestle in that match

  • Got to be a top 5 moment in 80's wrestling and maybe the peak of the Crockett NWA. I think I wore out my VHS copy of this match.

  • @sott3 i still have my VHS copy of this I know thats sad but its true I saw it the other day on my Videocassetter player I still have one of those two LOL!

  • @VanDamme11 Don't be ashamed, I have this on VHS too. This is a collector's item.

  • @leroy592 LOL yes it is

  • this was a classic! I remember watching this in 87! I was screaming the whole match

  • these guys knew how to put on a show

  • i do wish i'd been born years earlier so that this kind of match could've had a REAL impression on me.

  • LOL mad old school u gotta love it!

If you'd like a laugh come check out "Knicks Bronze" and "Zelda Silver" in my channel.....enjoy

  • this stuff is awesome! Crowds don't get even close to this anymore! The horsemen were geniuses because it takes a hell of a lot of heat to get this much of a crowd response. Not to mention Crockett really knew how to get the faces way over.

  • @bull864 well it didn't work much with Nikita Koloff in his matches with the horsemen. Whenever Nikita wrestled Luger, the crowd was 80% or more behind Luger. Same with his matches with Flair, Tully and Arn. Just watch the Nikita Koloff vs Lex Luger Steel Cage match from Great American Bash 87 and you'll see exactly what I mean. The fans booed Nikita out of the Arena after the match.

  • True enough, but the roar at 11:53 for Nikita is amazing...somehow the excitement at matches isn't nearly as intense as moments like that

  • dog collar match the skywalker match the war games tower of doom all JCP Ideas Vince has nothing but surrvor serries and the royal rumbel the rest of his idea's suck.

  • Awesome stuff. NWA wrestling was he best. They cameup with Wargames and so many other matches before Vince mcmahon and the WWF/E ever evn thought of them. Vince stole most of his ideas from NWA/WCW including the one for Wrestlemania which was done first in the NWA with Starcade. Pro wrestling died when WCW died. WWE sucks. WCW/NWA 4-EVER!!!!

  • this is wrestling history and even if WWE bring it back the WWE kid fans will never understand it and they will only care about it if Super Cena and PG DX are in it.

  • Also, this match only really works with blood! WWE is PG now.

  • wwe chat had a voting poll up what ppv would you like to see war games the triple cage match was one of the pics so its possible wwe could replace survivor series with wargames

  • Back then the crowd was always into these matches classic not this overtop crappy wrestling

  • Those were the days...

  • One of the two greatest concepts ever in wrestling along with the Royal Rumble. Sucks we will never see this ever again thanks to Worst Wrestling Ever. The date on this video is wrong.

This took place on July 4, 1987 in the old Omni in Atlanta. The July 31, 1987 War Games was in the Orange Bowl in Miami.

  • THE MATCH BEYOND!

That's how you make a match seem career-ending.

  • arn anderson= best wrestler never to win world title imo

  • I concur.

  • @wweking09

Great choice. Is that in reference to in-ring ability or popularity, name recognition? I personally think Roddy Piper is the highest profile wrestler to have never won a world title, followed by Jake Roberts, Curt Hennig, Arn Anderson, and Scott Hall

  • @cbaldwinjr Curt Hennig was a World Champ in AWA.

  • @headhunterzmma

I don't consider the AWA during that time to be a major league wrestling promotion. It was basically an indie with an ESPN contract. It's like calling Dan Severn a multiple-time world champion for wrestling for a watered down NWA brand

  • @cbaldwinjr you mentioned all of those wrestlers but fail to mention Wahoo McDaniel.....he never won a world title either and other than Hennig, had more wrestling ability than any of them.....

  • @d820m

I look at world titles as before 1987 and after 1987. Before 1987, guys held titles for 3-5 years at a times (with the exception of the fluke title change). A guy like Wahoo McDaniel could be main event material without ever needing a belt because of the regional setup. So yeah, he deserves to be on the list, but back them, the world title was SACRED. The guys I mention, it wasn't so much...and they were probably more deserving considering some of the choices made to make world champions

  • @cbaldwinjr Today they put belts on guys who are jobbed out for months and not ready. Jack Swagger who is a very good wrestler was jobbed out then given a title where he was booked as the weakest champ of the last few years and now he's on Superstars.

  • @wweking09 I totally agree!

  • @wweking09 so true!!

  • @wweking09 i agree with you partly, not only did Arn deserve a world title run, but so did Roddy Piper , there are a few others also such as Dick Slater,

  • was this before ric flair plane crash that year

  • The plane crash was way back in 1975.

  • This match brings so many memories back...I wish this event was released on dvd along with other NWA/WCW video archives. I remember that it was the most talked about match of the summer I think it was July 4th,1987 at the Omni in Atlanta.

  • This match was unreal. And I loved seeing JJ getting the tar beat out of him.

  • War games was the sh!t

This was something that everyone was excited about. It was when wrestling meant something and not... "oh here we go again... same old match with guys with no personality."

  • This is the greatest match in wrestling history. Period. Dusty vs Arn. Luger cleaning house. Road Warriors, Nikita, 4 Horsemen. It can never be like this again.

  • Now THIS was wrestling the way it was, and should still be today. NWA crowds really got into the matches back in the day, but a crowd at a WWE show now is more likely to chant "bo-ring!", "refund!" and "we want wrestling!".

  • man these were the good ol days. what we see on tv now is pure bullshit. no more blood. thank god for monday night football or csi miami.

  • csi miami seriously david caruso is horrible actor. he should not be allowed to own a television let alone be seen on one every week.

  • I can;t understand who would like nikita koloff. He was so unappealing. I mean no ladies in any arena that he wrestled cheered for him, it was mostly guys.

  • Whoops, my bad on the date in the description. It's actually kinda amazing this video has lasted for 3 years, while all my other videos got pulled.

Anyways, thanks for all the comments over the years guys. Much appreciated.

  • i remeber the horsemen winning the war games once(w/sid as a 4h) did they ever win any other time?

  • Someone may have already said this, but were your other vids under the WCW label? And correct me if I'm wrong, but this is an NWA match. I'm not sure if WWE owns the NWA video library, but if they dont, then thats probably why this video has lasted so long. Cuz frankly the NWA is dead, so there is no one to bitch about copyright stuff. And thanks for posting this. I just love the tagline "The Match Beyond" . Thats just plain bad ass LOL

  • @funkysnoogans WWE does own the NWA video library. Remember that Jim Crockett owned NWA, when he sold it to Ted Turner it was renamed WCW.

In 1998-1999 Ted sold everything to Time Warner. In 2001 T.W sold the whole library to Vince McMahon.

So yes WWE owns NWA, WCW..

  • Wow. I already knew that lol. How stupid did that other comment sound then huh? Now I feel like an idiot. Oh well. This match is still great.

  • @funkysnoogans Its cool. Just remember that no thanks to T.W WWE now owns all these great matched and memories.

  • I honestly dont get why Vince even bought it. Aside from the Invasion angle and a few dvd's, he hasn't done anything with it. Seems kind of pointless.

  • @funkysnoogans yes so true, but T.W called to see if Vince wanted WCW by any chance. Vince of course wanted WCW out of the way, so he bought it just for the hell of it.

For those of you asking me how much Vince bought all these great memories for. 4.5 Million that's it.

T.W practically gave it away just so wrestling wouldn't be in in it's TNT, or TBS line up.

  • @PWF thanks for putting this on here

  • WWE can't even compete with this 22 year old footage. There's only a few larger than life characters today, and JOHN CENA IS NOT ONE OF THEM! Can't believe a guy from New England, pretending to be (Black) from the "streets" is the most popular wrestler! Every NWA/ and (early) WCW guy was larger than life. Today's wrestler just emulate things we really don't like about society (read: John Cena). This is great. I'm only 28, but i remember this well.

  • If by "popular", you mean the lowest PPV buyrates in 3 years then yeah Cena is pretty popular. The only guys in today's WWE that could have been a success in any era are Chris Jericho and HBK.

  • @thalastpoet AMEN! Guys like Dusty Rhodes and The Road Warriors were wrestlers you had an emotional investment in and really wanted to get behind. They never said chessy stuff they just got down to business and told u want they were gonna do to those prick horsemen friday night @ the omni! Wrestling was all about competition and settlin grudges back then. Now everything is over written, over produced, over the top, nothing seems believable and Mr. Cena fits that bill perfectly!

  • WWE needs to bring Wargames back and please dont PG it up.

  • 4 horsemen all day

  • I wish UFC would do a wargames match: Brock Lesnar, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture & Forrest Griffin vs Fedor, Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva, GSP & Mirko Cro Cop

  • Nice idea, but MMA just doesn't work that way.

  • Unfortunately not! UFC is talent driven not innovation driven! i mean its a great idea, but it'd need a new man in charge to think outside the box like that.

  • The greatest feud in wrestling history...... period!

  • The greatest feud in wrestling history.......

  • No disrespect to Foley-Taker, but this is the best cage match EVER!

  • Someone please post video from where Dusty, TA, and LOD break Ole's leg

  • I remember that....wasn't it a scaffold match?

  • How did you upload a 23 min vid??

    Great classic match.

    Thanks for posting.

  • "I mean, the shriek of agony, sounds of pain! That's all you're hearing here!" Good ole JR

  • Scrappy! I forgot about fuggin' Scrappy! (The blonde Tommy Rich looking ref outside the ring). I can still remember the promos for this: "The Match Beyond..10 men, 2 rings wrapped in steel...and only one way out! War Games 1 and the rematch, War Games 2..." I'm 9 years old all over again.

  • vince is a wuss he"ll never add this to wwe ppv's it would've been perfect in the attitude era.

  • i wonder why vince hasnt brought this back?? answer, no real wrestlers these days. i watched raw 7/20/09 and it was the worst show i ever saw!!!!

  • i know man, wwe does suck!

  • Is this the July 31 match? That match didn't have James J Dillon, it had the War Machine as the 5th horseman member. This match was on July 4. The Great American Bash, in 1987, was a tour.

  • what a great match

  • Man the golden days of wrestling was this luger pre wwf or after he got let go cause I thought he was a body builder in vince's wbf before he started wrestling

  • this was luger pre wwf. this match was in 1987. luger started in florida in 85-86. he went to vinces wbf in 92 iirc after he lost the wcw title to sting.

  • damn this is a great match i never get tired of watching it

  • even WORSE, somebody said earlier that DUSTY wasn't that popular! Are you CRAZY?! Dusty Rhodes is one of the most popular wrestlers EVER in wrestling!! He may not have the power moves to get the same kind of pop that the Road Warriors might get in a match like this, but the crowd loved him! To suggest that the company used some kind of "cheer machine" to make it seem like more fans were cheering for the faces than really were is kind of ridiculous!

Watch the match again really carefully, ok?

  • Comment removed

  • LOL! You are crackin' me UP! But first of all, how can you possibly tell whether it's men or women cheering? But if the women are cheering for Lex (and that's a big "if", 'cause in this Wargames video, I sure don't hear 'em!), there's a whole lot more people cheering for Koloff! (I repeat, Luger slams Koloff at 14:19, DEAD SILENCE; Koloff clotheslines Luger at 20:50, ERUPTION!).

Now, what the heck have you got against bald guys? Why can't a bald guy be a face? Or even good-looking, since you

  • keep bringing it up. Nikita was a great face! Have you watched the youtube video "birth of the superpowers"? That may well be the biggest "pop" I've ever heard from a wrestling crowd! They went absolutely NUTS!

And by the way, that was Dusty's idea! I don't know if you mean Dusty sucked as a wrestler or a booker, but he was DEFINITELY one of the greatest wrestlers ever. As a booker/promoter, I admit he had some misses, but he had a lotta hits too. A lot of the stuff that happened during

GET OVER HOW WRESTLERS LOOK!! "an ugly bald guy over someone with long beautiful hair"? OMG!!

  • Y'all just don't get it. There's a difference between a CHEER and a REACTION. Heels will get reactions; they're supposed to, and the bigger the better. But there is no point in this match other then when a new horseman is coming into the ring that you hear anything even REMOTELY resembling a CHEER for the heels! Even when Nikita gets the spiked piledriver, there's barely any reaction from the crowd. And to say the crowd didn't like Nikita?! Did you miss the double clothesline at 11:53? And

  • Comment removed

  • I watched the video again. Not only was there no cheering when Nikita got spike-piledrived, there was also no cheering right before that when Luger bodyslammed Nikita.

Maybe you're right about the U.S. title match; I haven't seen it since the eighties. But if it was mainly ladies that were cheering for Lex, that's not really a true representation. Why y'all so concerned with who's better looking? This is WRESTLING!!!

  • My GOD, I can't believe someone posted this whole match!!! I remember when this first came out - I thought WarGames had to be the coolest thing I had EVER seen!!! And I'll be honest with you, 22 years later, I think it still may be! Back then wrestling videos didn't come out for several months, not almost instantly like they do now. I must have gone up to the local video store every other day until WarGames finally arrived! I damn near broke the rewind button watchin' that thing!! Classic, man!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm going to have to disagree with you. You should check out the "birth of the superpowers" video posted here. The fans LOVED Nikita; they hated Luger. Listen to the pop every time Nikita clotheslines (or "sickles") somebody.

  • submission or surrender? Isnt that the same thing?

  • I wish that the WWE would have Wargames, with two rings enclosed by the steel cage with a roff on top, like the NWa used to do, that would be really cool to see, I wish that WWE would utilize more NWA themes for Pay-Per Views, like Starcade, Halloween Havoc, and maybe Spring Stampede, or Fall Brawl.

  • Amazing stuff -- every single one of those guys knew how to tell a story in the ring, and every moment is electric; nowadays, even with the high-flying and extreme-style matches, nobody can create a match nearly as exciting as this one -- there's a difference between a match that builds tension and excitement, and a match that's just a bunch of stunt men tumbling.

  • Bring back war games.

  • This War Games was the first and THE BEST!

  • The 1992 one might be better, but I never saw it in its entirety.
