I grew up in a so called Afrikaanderwijk in Rotterdam (Holland), mostly in the De la Reystraat, going to school in the Johannes Brandstraat and the Tweebosstraat. In school I learned many songs in Afrikaans and I read all the stories of the Boers.

As a British citizen, i realise this song is kind of aimed "against" me, however, i admire the Afrikanner nationalism and patriotism that runs deep in your blood. Its something we here in Britian have lost, wave after wave of immigration has saturated Britain to the point where it is no long "British" or can be considered a coherent society. Whilst i am no expert on South African politics, i belive it would be in the interest of all the SA peoples, for a seperate Afrikaner state.

Ik groeide op met verhalen en liedjes op school over de Boerenoorlogen en las de boeken van L. Penning (o.a. Held van Spionkop) stuk. Ik woonde o.a. in de De la Rey- en Martinus Steynstraat
Een familielid van mij nam als vrijwilliger dienst in het Boerenleger. Hij werd krijgsgevangen gemaakt in het kamp Simonstown en was bij de eerste groep van 250 Boeren, Hollanders en Duitsers die werden verscheept naar Degatalawa in Ceylon. Uiteindelijk heeft hij Friesland weer bereikt.

This is amazing.. time we saw something telling the story of the valiant struggle of the Boers against the British as Britain took their land - theirs by conquest. the terrible way in which the war was won scorched earth and interment. in the interests of full disclosure I am British (Welsh) grew up with Afrikaner kids in Northern Rhodesia, SWA and Kenya. at school there were SA kids whos grandparents were in the camps. It made me ashamed for being Britishwhich I never usually am..

Germany had its own colonial interests in southern Africa and didn't want to jeopardise them by going to war with the British over something that didn't concern them. Russia and Britain had reached an unspoken truce in the Great Game not to interfere with each other's empires. Basically, there was a balance of power in Europe that nobody was ready to disturb. Not yet, anyway.
De la Rey was a tragic figure, who never could outrun his personal demons. He tried hard to work with the British as Louis Botha and Jan Smuts were able to do.He was nominally swept up in the 1914 rebellion against WWI, but had in fact decided not to take part when he was killed by a British sentry after his driver failed to stop his car at a roadblock. We will never know if the killing was deliberate, or a tragic accident...Like so many in Iraq today.
He was a Boer general in the Anglo Boer war (South Africa). A war that saw the first concentration camps where women and children were kept and fed glass splpinters to cull them when the camp numbers got too high. A gracious man who returned english prisoners of war unscathed while the Boer prisoners of war were shipped of to Ceylon where many died leaving behind their burnt down farms and tortured families.

Een familielid van mij nam als vrijwilliger dienst in het Boerenleger. Hij werd krijgsgevangen gemaakt in het kamp Simonstown en was bij de eerste groep van 250 Boeren, Hollanders en Duitsers die werden verscheept naar Degatalawa in Ceylon. Uiteindelijk heeft hij Friesland weer bereikt.

All wars create shame and hate no nation should be "proud" of war. However stories such as this should be celebrated but also we must remember nobody is "right" in war. Both British and Boers should never have fought they had very similar viewpoints, atrocities were committed by both sides. And the lingering hatred that STILL remains in SA from this ancient war should be removed from society so we can all move move forward as humanity not as separate polarized nations!!!

That they invented apartheid, therefore creating so much hatred that now there is traumatised african criminals to fear. Only thanks to Mandela everibody is still living together in the same country. This is amazing.. time we saw something telling the story of the valiant struggle of the Boers against the British as Britain took their land - theirs by conquest. the terrible way in which the war was won scorched earth and interment. in the interests of full disclosure I am British (Welsh) grew up with Afrikaner kids in Northern Rhodesia, SWA and Kenya. at school there were SA kids whos grandparents were in the camps. It made me ashamed for being Britishwhich I never usually am..

I spent my youth in the Afrikaanderbuurt of Rotterdam and about the injustice to the Boers I was 'fed along with the bread' so to say.
Koos de la Rey was a true christian as well, famous for his humane treatment of the Khakies.

France was officially an ally of the British, and would need them if Germany decided to go for round 2 of the 1870 War. Germany had its own colonial interests in southern Africa and didn't want to jeopardise them by going to war with the British over something that didn't concern them. Russia and Britain had reached an unspoken truce in the Great Game not to interfere with each other's empires. Basically, there was a balance of power in Europe that nobody was ready to disturb. Not yet, anyway.

De la Rey was a tragic figure, who never could outrun his personal demons. He tried hard to work with the British as Louis Botha and Jan Smuts were able to do.He was nominally swept up in the 1914 rebellion against WWI, but had in fact decided not to take part when he was killed by a British sentry after his driver failed to stop his car at a roadblock. We will never know if the killing was deliberate, or a tragic accident...Like so many in Iraq today.

He was a Boer general in the Anglo Boer war (South Africa). A war that saw the first concentration camps where women and children were kept and fed glass splpinters to cull them when the camp numbers got too high. A gracious man who returned english prisoners of war unscathed while the Boer prisoners of war were shipped of to Ceylon where many died leaving behind their burnt down farms and tortured families.

With strategy, the kakies was defeated by the boers (Afrikaans farmers).

Een zeer mooi lied! Ik voel me als Nederland toch een beetje verbonden met de 'Boeren' uit Z-A. Mischien is het toch handig als ze hun Afrikaans gaan modernizeren naar het huidige (helaas wel onnodig ingewikkelde) Nederlands. Samen staan we sterk, nietwaar? In plaats van 5 miljoen Afrikaners, en iets van 20-22 miljoen Nederlandstaligen zijn we dan samen met 27 miljoen! Eendracht maakt macht, wat in het Afrikaans 'Eendragt maakt magt' is volgens mij ;).

There were about 225 Russian warriors that took part in the war on the Boere side. Special "Dutch commitee" was found in Russia to help Boeres with money and medicine. The branches of the commitee worked in more then 50 Russian cities.
