Irony is that they thought they were ultimately taking a balanced view, making Arch a sad baffoon with a heart of gold, the Conservatives saw the charicature as a raw but eggxagerated portryal of working class values. @DoubroDoubro If you watch interviews with the creators of the show they say that they expected pretty much everybody to understand that Archie's character was exaggerated on purpose to provide kind of a straw man to show how ridiculous a lot of right wingers were at the time. What they didn't anticipate (which is where the "universal appeal" comes in) is that a lot of people didn't get it and started watching because they loved Archie and thought he was "our kinda guy" lol
