  • Fantastic! Best epic ever...and....ever....and....ever!!!

  • Wonderful solo by Steve Hackett.

Although according to several Genesis documentaries that solo actually wasn't meant to be, they pretty much had finished the whole thing when Hackett began to play the flute solo on his guitar for just the fun of it, the rest of the band joined in and decided that it was too good NOT to include it.

  • Pero Que Es Esta Mierd!! o.O

  • Where's the piano intro???

  • Phil should have stayed on the drums and Steve Hackett should have never left.

  • Phil Collins voice doesnt fit the song, too weak.

  • @1776Matthew I agree the music is awesome. Peter was always a better performer. Phil admitted that he never wanted to do it and that he didn't really know what to do. And especially that he was more worried about the communication with the audience than the singing itself. I think he was just trying things, some which didn't work that came off cheesy. He's got a nice voice, he really didn't need to force gestures is all.

  • not that bothered about fibonacci sequence

  • its the flairs and the unkempt hair that gets me

  • they are the best

  • 2:20 Mobb deep anyone?

  • @XiPepsiX No thank you. Genesis will do just fine.

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set, Genesis The Lamb Live at the Shrine 1975 3-disc 2CD/DVD set plus more rare, vintage Genesis from the 70s available at Tommygun Video please see our Youtube channel for link to web site, video/audio clips, and more info

  • what instrument is at 3:29?? anyone?

  • @mhz888 Probably an arp pro soloist

  • @mhz888 It's an ARP Pro-soloist (mono) synth which Tony used onstage from 73-77

  • @ 4:42..Flashback Memories- Game and Raekwon so dope!

  • The song begins at 4:43 for me! GOD! WHAT WERE THEY SMOKING! WOOO!

  • One of the best guitar solos ever, along with Camel: Ice (Andy Latimer)

and Pink Floyd: Comfortably numb ( David Gilmour)

Hacketts solo on solo: Spectral mornings, is also up there

  • DIOS ES EN UNO MISMO DIOS ES LA VERDAD EN UNOS MISMO DIOS LOS CREO SÇEN SI MISMOS

  • Chester Thompson ONLY had to play drumkit by drumkit -as a hired musician does- what Collins invented, right!? There you have ALL the difference even the definition of

DIFFERENCE IN MUSIC ...as it comes to THE GENUINE composer-performer and all stand-ins and the whole shitload of "tributes-to" attempts that never reach the best and mostly aren't at all a TRIBUTE but more a sound-a-like-forgery for fun or money.

    LEARN! DAMM!

  • Phil's arm gestures are horrible! Especially the one where he pumps his fist to the right at the beginning. It's like every bad american idol cliche of hand gestures here.

  • Oye que phil mueve los brazos muy bien , es asi la interpretacion

  • @SirCrimsonWolf Maybe his ass isn't cute enough for you either? Maybe he needs some glittery eye make-up?

You're criticising his "American Idol" hand gestures, but you have an "American Idol" mindset. It is the MUSIC that is important, not the "image". And this music is unparalleled.

  • from 3:00 ! tony at best

  • stupenda interpretazione, fantastica, voce meravigliosa, da brividi!!!!!

  • I prefer the voice of Phil in this song.....

  • @eurojammer47 I think this version is way better than Selling England......

But not the vocals. The arrangement is way better, and also Hacketts guitar solo´. The drums have probably improved the most.

  • I haven't the words for that.......

  • klugscheiß: wortspiel zu" ffirth of forth," jaja

"firth" bedeutet im schottischen auch "mund" also die verirrten wanderer trinken, um nicht zu verdursten, aus dem mund des fünften (toten)

  • Chester Thompson deserves to be in the HOF with the other 5 Genesis members, seriously the years and talent he put in he is as much of Genesis as Phil, Tony, Mike, Steve and Peter

  • @MrNotNiceGuy even daryl Streumer

  • Hackett the only member of Genesis not to Full on Sell out?

  • @skintrade Have you HEARD his 80's tripe? Maybe even worse than solo Gabriel or Phil's Genesis (both of which I actually generally liked).

  • Tony Banks was tough, and maybe the flute solo previously composed by P.Gabriel was not so strong ! Peter dismissed while Tony remained. And as proof Pete never played flute since his solo career; or if he did : probably privately, not in studio !

  • dommage pour la qualité image et son .

un moment vraiment génial de solo guitare.

    morceau incontournable de Génésis.

  • what a band!

  • the Best band with Pink Floyd from UK

  • i love the sound of genesis in 70s or till steve left .. the sound changed after that i know they had more hits in 80s but it just dont sound like the real genesis of 70s which i love its just my view

  • love this song excellent tune

  • Bellissimo!

  • Collin's voice is too weak for this song.

  • @degree7 I think Phil brings a sensitivity to the material. As much as I like Gabriel, I prefer Phil's Apocalypse in 9/8, for instance, because he really lets the music speak for itself rather than over dramatizing it. He does the same here. Not to say I don't get a kick out of Pete's performance. Depends on which I'm in the mood for. There's definitely songs that Phil wouldn't have been able to perform, but I don't think this is one of them.

  • MAGIC

  • amazing..

  • I LOVE ...I LOVE

    THANK YOU GENESIS

  • Hackett always, and justifiably, gets the most accolades for his solo in this song, but the individual performance that I always loved the most was from Rutherford, alternating between bass and 12-string/bass pedals during the mid-section. One of the great unsung rhythm players. I just wish the 12-string were more audible in this recording.

  • @ashcol47 Rutherford's bass playing in early Genesis is fantastic, and he is very talented.

  • In my first day in the school of music I learnt what is a music: It is the art of combining the sounds, dividing in melody, harmony and rhythm. Firth of Fifth is not a music. This is a masterpiece, a spectacular combination between the elements in his the most elevated level that will have to remain so for all eternity...

I am eternally thanked because of having had the chance to assist this tour in 1977 and to genesis of having made a God's symphony audible.

  • great! love the shots of Phil, one of the greatest drummers of ALL TIME!

    300% better than 99% of the so called"music" today.....sadly

  • @rdety Pretty right!!!

  • 3 dislikes What?!!

  • way to go stevie!!!!!! ;)

  • loved this live in Toronto,Canada in 1976,March I think...we were on our March break from High school..then in front Row Center in the Gardens in Toronto...that was tooo close to really enjoy the sounds...

John the only reason they recored Seconds out in Paris,Framce is because they are the most respectful and quiet audinence in the world...Quote from Mike Rutherford.

  • Stunning song. Hacketts solo is the best on the album. But folks please do not forget Tony Banks...the heart behind this legendary band.

  • Genesis даже сравнить не с чем, чудесная музыка !!!

  • So many memories!!!

  • @StripeyTinca ...indeed so!70s...and 80s...werent they times of pure fun...worth reliving?Lets discuss if you get a chance...I was in London then! skystratos@ymail.com

  • God wrote this solo by Hackett´s hands...absolutely stunning!

  • @doutorfred Banks wrote this solo really (the main melody)

  • Even 2 years after Gabriel left, they were magical.

They didn't turn into a pop group untill Hackett left.

And it's not Phil Collin's fault, they simply lost 2 great songwriters and personalities.

  • @Topographer well said.

  • When most of you were still in diapers in 1973, they were equal to Pink Floyd and its up coming [new] sounds, and blew our doors off even way back when.

Then they knocked it down a notch or two for the general sheep in the US, [sales] but they still went way over most of your heads.

  • Steve Hackett

  • Gibson...

  • i grew up in the 90's (you know, NSYNC, BSB, etc :( ) and the first genesis version i saw was phil's one. then i saw peter's one and then ray wilson's one. I must say i find the 3 Genesis versions awesome after surviving all the groups (torture) mentioned above.... so what the hell!!! I LOVE genesis from the first one to the last one....lol.

  • yeah i like both eras of Genesis.....

  • La Bibbia!!!Osss

  • the best solo ever (place 2 goes to the fugue from ELP :D)

  • Give a look to my response video! :)

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FALTA LA INTRODUCCION CON PIANO

  • ojala suban este tema subtitulado tiene una buena letra

  • Vote for your top 5 Steve Hackett songs on his official Facebook page!

  • brilliant .

  • Too bad Peter is not there...it would have been much better !

  • i loooooove the solo-keyboard-part. could listen to it hundreds of times (together with "fugue" from Endless Enigma by ELP)

  • This is just wonderful...glad I saw them a few years after this.

  • Finally they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. FUSE Channel on March 15th 2010 LIVE from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC- DON'T MISS IT -- GENESIS LIVES FOREVER !!

  • Adidas

  • @mmihalko1 bullcrap! Are "A trick of the tail" and "Wind & wuthering" cheese? Genesis STILL made great music without Gabriel (but without Hackett, that's another story)

  • @mostlyanthony I totally agree.. when Hackett was still in the band, it was still good prog.. Then it turned into such a normal pop music

  • buuuu

  • Possibly Steve's finest moment with the band?

  • Why do so many try to state just their preference or opinion at best with comparisons of Peter and Phil? Who cares? Relax, drink a beer, do whatever it takes but ENJOY what YOU do like.

  • genesis at their very best

  • Agreed!

  • Are really fantastics... Hackett is a God and Phil too.

  • @NeedOfMusic Peter Gabriel > Phil Collins

  • Caramba!!! Magnifico...

  • steves guitar makes heaven cry. and me too. saw them live in 1977 never forget this phantastic moment.

  • SH was an absolute freak.....These guys were playing shit that nobody was thinking of

  • I only wish they would release this on video as the Seconds Out Live album is one of my favourite recordings along with Wind and Wuthering (one of the most complex progressive rock recordings of all time) and Trick of a Tail.

To me, Collin's voice added a more etheral element to Genesis + combined with the non-comercial leanings of Hacket + no pressure from the record company to record new wave pop songs (ala Duke and on) makes this my period of Genesis

  • If you saw Genesis live in 1977 wih PG, you must have been dreaming, since PG left the group in 1975 ...

Of course Genesis made the best songs, or should we say works, before PG left, even though they made a couple of good records also after he left. I have seen Genesis live several times, but unfortunately not with PG (which I have been blessed to see many times too ...). My best live experience was in Stockholm in 1982, where they played both Firth of fifth and Supper´s ready ...

  • saw Genesis in 1977 doing Lamb lies down on Broadway with PG and to this day it stands alone as the greatest concert I have ever seen. RAel and the slipperman were the greatest ever!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • dude! are you for real!

    whoo gives a crap

  • lol you sure about that lol

  • x 1001SLF..rettifico,peccato ke NON si riesca a trovare!!!...i'm sorry..

  • While I don't agree their best songs were made after PG left, I do agree with the bulk of what you are saying and it is a damn good point I never thought of. Peter Gabriel and Genesis around that 80's period were both very pop influenced and had they both tried to stay with prog rock flavors at that time it would have led to slow demise.

  • Im not sure about that. They were not exactly making 'Fountain of Salmacis', 'Musical Box' or 'I Know What I Like' in the 80's - or even much longer after PG left. I know bands have to change it up, but I think their prog/alt sound definitely changed after Trick Of The Tail. Although PC + PG have done well to change with the times and as a live band havent they been around as long as the beatles??

  • not the same without gabriel...:(

  • Marterpiece

  • 4.04 lezione di drums del gran maestro filippo colline

  • Who?

  • mvaccagusta quanti ani gheto

  • ...not to mention that this song (Tony Banks' Masterwork) is based on the Fibonacci series for the propotions between the solos' duration; therefore the lack of Gabriel (and consequently the lack of a flute solo) destroy the sense and the structure of the work.

You'll probably crucifie me if I say they have to split up probably after Peter left, and surely after Steve left - my regret is NOT for absurd things they did as a trio, but for the way they treated previous material..

  • @KaiserFranzM It was truly rare that the Gabriel-era material was ever performed even close to adequacy after he (and especially Hackett) left the band. The band transmutated into something far more commercial. I think the only reason they still continue to play anything pre-Duke at all is because Collins likes to show off on the drums (ie "In The Cage" medley and to some extent this one).

  • @KaiserFranzM

Hi. I was unaware of the mathematical implications of this masterpiece. Could you elaborate, please, or post us a link where we could learn more about this?

    Thank you.

  • @KaiserFranzM the song is great because of the melody and sense; the Fibonacci proportions is just a detail. Nobody ever said "What a wonderful song! Surely it's based on Fibonacci proportions"... absurd...

  • @rinaldimaxi what the song has to do with fibonacci prop?

  • @KaiserFranzM

There is no flute player in the "room" so they tried to fix it (not very well in my opinion). I don't get the Fibonacci relation with the flute (and also the flute player) missing. The notes are there, just with another instrument. I also miss the grand piano in this live rendition of such a great song. Should they bring a grand piano to stage? Get over it. There is lot of good stuff to hear from them after the flute player left ;)

  • Collins was good at singing (clearly on par with Gabriel) and was even better at the drums. But my one criticism is that he was nowhere near as good a frontman as Gabriel was. Don't get me wrong, Phil brought the band to great new levels, but a large portion of the spectacle went missing with Gabriel.

  • forse il live più fantastico della storia della musica..sempregenesis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • togli pure il forse....

  • I can't see where Collins is so a genius as i read here...on drums Bruford is by far better (even if here of course he can't show enough, for every solo in these shows were taken by Collins - as saying: the light on me and dirty work on you) and on vocals he is just the shadow of Peter Gabriel. Not to talk of Collins ridiculous scenical presence... so please explain me why you find Collins that great here, for I think he just spoiled Genesis in that period.

  • Check 3min and 45 second mate.

It's Chester. Who's position in the band was to allow Collins to sing at the front by playing drums when needed, and nothing more. But go on have a pop at Collins anyhow O fair one!

  • Chester or Bill, the story is the same...I think it's the death of a drummer to play basic stuff and then when the solo comes........you have to go and play tamburine, because the "singing drummer" has to do it!

  • Fuckin hell! Collins sounds just like Gabriel in this vid.

  • great guitar play !!!11

  • Every time Phil takes to the drums, he brings the music to a new level. Each and every member of Genesis shines a bright light. Phil shines the brightest.

  • That is if he doesn't sing.

  • Comment removed

  • Im still amazed at how good genesis were both as a live act and recording artists. Banks, Collins and especially Hackett really have it nailed here, just perfection (sorry Mike - rhythm section & bass always gets overlooked) - Brill video - thanks for posting.

  • 4:04 phil collins..straordinerio..

  • I play keyboards and synths and what the thing I like most about Genesis is they put synthesizers (which most people stereotype to be for only electronic music) with guitars (which are usually accosiated with rock etc) and make them sound so good together. This is what prog rock is all about :D

  • This is Genesis at their best... and Prog Rock at its best. They float from Guitar-Bass-Drums-Keyboards to Guitar-Guitar-Keyboards-Drums-Drums as if it was easy. Superb, no less.

  • if this is the dallas 77 show im in the

    28th row !!!

  • No, those guy,s are for real I saw this show in 1978 if my memories is good.

  • he is Phil collins

    is not a cover band

  • collins sucks

  • I am the biggest Peter fan, but Phil does a great job here...

  • i want gabriel :(

  • Epic

  • Epic indeed

  • guitar and piano solo fantastic...

  • What a tune!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Check out my vid response!! I'm a huge genesis fan! When I performed this song, nobody knew what it was...except for one person

  • Great job kidneystoner! When I was 16 I had no chance to play what I wanted in the music school instead I had to play Beethoven in trumpet!! Congrats, well done!!!

  • I'm 51 years old, italian , bought Nursery Crime in 1975. The best music ever heard now like 34 years ago.

  • I´ve seen genesis performing live in 1977 with 17 y.o. and it was one of most espetacular experiences in my live, unforgetable. I was totaly envolved with the magic, by the end of the show, with the final part of Musical Box, tears began to roll out, I felt levitating. Too sad they are not doing magic anymore...

  • What do you mean?

  • I completely empathise. Same for me when I was 16 and saw them in 1973.

Genesis will always live with me!

  • Genesis is my life... and will always be with me...!

  • ... and with me! :-)

  • @cmtemoacirsilva hey consider yourself so lucky wowman!

  • @CaptenSmoochie Hi!! I do believe so!! They played 3 days in a roll and I could watch twice !! The show was identical as this video, same songs, 2 drums, etc. Even been so long ago, 33 years, I still have that amaizing wonderfull sensation. Someome wrote that God made the guitar solo of this song, I just wanna add that, I think He made it all!! Kind regards,

Moacir PS Are you a pilot??

  • @cmtemoacirsilva yep you are right god made the guitar solo his on world name is sir stephen hackett haha

  • @cmtemoacirsilva you lucky, me no, Im a young now... what I can see now? lady gaga? hahah what a shit!

  • @anderzom Anderzom, it´s very hard you find so explendid groups and musicians like end of 60`s and 70´s. That generation, in my opinion, still the most productive ever. It´s not a matter of been old fashion but it´s the reality. There is no sound that touch me more inside as these from the past. Who knows some day comes a new group as good as they were? Very hard but not impossible! Regards

  • very unique and interesting music. Awesome guitar solo.

  • Are you new to this band?

  • T. Banks - keyboards 1967 - 1998

    M. Rutherford - bass 1967 - 1998

    P. Gabriel - vocal 1967 - 1975

    A. Phillips - guitar 1967 - 1970

    C. Stewart - drums 1967-1968

    J. Silver - drums 1969

    J. Mayhew - drums 1970

    P. Collins - drums 1971 - 1995, drums / vocal 1976 - 1995 / 2007

    S. Hackett - guitar 1971 - 1977

    R. Wilson - vocal 1996 - 1998

  • Live addtions:

    B. Bruford - drums 1976

    C. Thompson - drums 1977 - 1992 / 2007

    D. Stuermer - guitar 1978 - 1992 / 2007

    A. Drennan - guitar, bass 1998

  • Hackett rules though. Hackett's departure had a bigger effect on the band than Gabriel's departure. And Then There Were Three sucked!

  • Amen to that!

  • Love this song! Steve Hackett is so amazing....so many memories......
