i love the sound of genesis in 70s or till steve left .. the sound changed after that i know they had more hits in 80s but it just dont sound like the real genesis of 70s which i love its just my view
@degree7 I think Phil brings a sensitivity to the material. As much as I like Gabriel, I prefer Phil's Apocalypse in 9/8, for instance, because he really lets the music speak for itself rather than over dramatizing it. He does the same here. Not to say I don't get a kick out of Pete's performance. Depends on which I'm in the mood for. There's definitely songs that Phil wouldn't have been able to perform, but I don't think this is one of them.
Hackett always, and justifiably, gets the most accolades for his solo in this song, but the individual performance that I always loved the most was from Rutherford, alternating between bass and 12-string/bass pedals during the mid-section. One of the great unsung rhythm players. I just wish the 12-string were more audible in this recording.
In my first day in the school of music I learnt what is a music: It is the art of combining the sounds, dividing in melody, harmony and rhythm. Firth of Fifth is not a music. This is a masterpiece, a spectacular combination between the elements in his the most elevated level that will have to remain so for all eternity...
I am eternally thanked because of having had the chance to assist this tour in 1977 and to genesis of having made a God's symphony audible.

I only wish they would release this on video as the Seconds Out Live album is one of my favourite recordings along with Wind and Wuthering (one of the most complex progressive rock recordings of all time) and Trick of a Tail.

Seriously who misses Peter Gabriel? Their best songs were made after Gabriel left. And don´t think that their music would have been less "commercial" with Gabriel. They developped in a pretty similar way. "So" is more or less a twin of "Invisible Touch". And is there really a big difference between "Us" and "we can´t dance"?
While I don't agree their best songs were made after PG left, I do agree with the bulk of what you are saying and it is a damn good point I never thought of. Peter Gabriel and Genesis around that 80's period were both very pop influenced and had they both tried to stay with prog rock flavors at that time it would have led to slow demise.
Im not sure about that. They were not exactly making 'Fountain of Salmacis', 'Musical Box' or 'I Know What I Like' in the 80's - or even much longer after PG left. I know bands have to change it up, but I think their prog/alt sound definitely changed after Trick Of The Tail. Although PC + PG have done well to change with the times and as a live band havent they been around as long as the beatles??
...not to mention that this song (Tony Banks' Masterwork) is based on the Fibonacci series for the propotions between the solos' duration; therefore the lack of Gabriel (and consequently the lack of a flute solo) destroy the sense and the structure of the work.
You'll probably crucifie me if I say they have to split up probably after Peter left, and surely after Steve left - my regret is NOT for absurd things they did as a trio, but for the way they treated previous material..
@KaiserFranzM It was truly rare that the Gabriel-era material was ever performed even close to adequacy after he (and especially Hackett) left the band. The band transmutated into something far more commercial. I think the only reason they still continue to play anything pre-Duke at all is because Collins likes to show off on the drums (ie "In The Cage" medley and to some extent this one).
Hi. I was unaware of the mathematical implications of this masterpiece. Could you elaborate, please, or post us a link where we could learn more about this?
@KaiserFranzM the song is great because of the melody and sense; the Fibonacci proportions is just a detail. Nobody ever said "What a wonderful song! Surely it's based on Fibonacci proportions"... absurd...
There is no flute player in the "room" so they tried to fix it (not very well in my opinion). I don't get the Fibonacci relation with the flute (and also the flute player) missing. The notes are there, just with another instrument. I also miss the grand piano in this live rendition of such a great song. Should they bring a grand piano to stage? Get over it. There is lot of good stuff to hear from them after the flute player left ;)
Collins was good at singing (clearly on par with Gabriel) and was even better at the drums. But my one criticism is that he was nowhere near as good a frontman as Gabriel was. Don't get me wrong, Phil brought the band to great new levels, but a large portion of the spectacle went missing with Gabriel.
I can't see where Collins is so a genius as i read here...on drums Bruford is by far better (even if here of course he can't show enough, for every solo in these shows were taken by Collins - as saying: the light on me and dirty work on you) and on vocals he is just the shadow of Peter Gabriel. Not to talk of Collins ridiculous scenical presence... so please explain me why you find Collins that great here, for I think he just spoiled Genesis in that period.
It's Chester. Who's position in the band was to allow Collins to sing at the front by playing drums when needed, and nothing more. But go on have a pop at Collins anyhow O fair one!
Chester or Bill, the story is the same...I think it's the death of a drummer to play basic stuff and then when the solo comes........you have to go and play tamburine, because the "singing drummer" has to do it!
Every time Phil takes to the drums, he brings the music to a new level. Each and every member of Genesis shines a bright light. Phil shines the brightest.
Im still amazed at how good genesis were both as a live act and recording artists. Banks, Collins and especially Hackett really have it nailed here, just perfection (sorry Mike - rhythm section & bass always gets overlooked) - Brill video - thanks for posting.
I play keyboards and synths and what the thing I like most about Genesis is they put synthesizers (which most people stereotype to be for only electronic music) with guitars (which are usually accosiated with rock etc) and make them sound so good together. This is what prog rock is all about :D
This is Genesis at their best... and Prog Rock at its best. They float from Guitar-Bass-Drums-Keyboards to Guitar-Guitar-Keyboards-Drums-Drums as if it was easy. Superb, no less.
Great job kidneystoner! When I was 16 I had no chance to play what I wanted in the music school instead I had to play Beethoven in trumpet!! Congrats, well done!!!
I´ve seen genesis performing live in 1977 with 17 y.o. and it was one of most espetacular experiences in my live, unforgetable. I was totaly envolved with the magic, by the end of the show, with the final part of Musical Box, tears began to roll out, I felt levitating. Too sad they are not doing magic anymore...
@CaptenSmoochie Hi!! I do believe so!! They played 3 days in a roll and I could watch twice !! The show was identical as this video, same songs, 2 drums, etc. Even been so long ago, 33 years, I still have that amaizing wonderfull sensation. Someome wrote that God made the guitar solo of this song, I just wanna add that, I think He made it all!! Kind regards,
@anderzom Anderzom, it´s very hard you find so explendid groups and musicians like end of 60`s and 70´s. That generation, in my opinion, still the most productive ever. It´s not a matter of been old fashion but it´s the reality. There is no sound that touch me more inside as these from the past. Who knows some day comes a new group as good as they were? Very hard but not impossible! Regards
Fantastic! Best epic ever...and....ever....and....ever!!!

While I don't agree their best songs were made after PG left, I do agree with the bulk of what you are saying and it is a damn good point I never thought of. Peter Gabriel and Genesis around that 80's period were both very pop influenced and had they both tried to stay with prog rock flavors at that time it would have led to slow demise.
trevmiesterj 2 years ago

KaiserFranzM 2 years ago 15
@KaiserFranzM It was truly rare that the Gabriel-era material was ever performed even close to adequacy after he (and especially Hackett) left the band. The band transmutated into something far more commercial. I think the only reason they still continue to play anything pre-Duke at all is because Collins likes to show off on the drums (ie "In The Cage" medley and to some extent this one).

@KaiserFranzM
Hi. I was unaware of the mathematical implications of this masterpiece. Could you elaborate, please, or post us a link where we could learn more about this?
Thank you.
OronOfMontreal 1 year ago
@KaiserFranzM the song is great because of the melody and sense; the Fibonacci proportions is just a detail. Nobody ever said "What a wonderful song! Surely it's based on Fibonacci proportions"... absurd...
rinaldimaxi 11 months ago 6
@rinaldimaxi what the song has to do with fibonacci prop?
greatpcfan 4 months ago
@KaiserFranzM

KaiserFranzM 2 years ago
Check 3min and 45 second mate.
It's Chester. Who's position in the band was to allow Collins to sing at the front by playing drums when needed, and nothing more. But go on have a pop at Collins anyhow O fair one!
WrexFV 2 years ago
Chester or Bill, the story is the same...I think it's the death of a drummer to play basic stuff and then when the solo comes........you have to go and play tamburine, because the "singing drummer" has to do it!
KaiserFranzM 2 years ago
Fuckin hell! Collins sounds just like Gabriel in this vid.

This is what prog rock is all about :D
kingofkeyboards 2 years ago 12
This is Genesis at their best... and Prog Rock at its best. They float from Guitar-Bass-Drums-Keyboards to Guitar-Guitar-Keyboards-Drums-Drums as if it was easy. Superb, no less.

Esta es la versión 1977 del tema "Firth Of Fifth". No hay introducción de piano y Phil Collins había reemplazado a Peter Gabriel como primera voz.

Regards
