If Ned had told Robert, Robert would have killed Jamie, Cersei (no big deal) but also the children. Joffrey may be a dick but Tommen and Myrcella are innocent. Ned has honour because he did it for the kids
@balaalalaslk First, Ned is an exceptional fighter, he was one of the handful of men who won the battle at the Tower of Joy against the best knights in Westeros. Second, Jaime repeatedly admits to having "shit for honor." He didn't kill him because he wants his brother back alive.
@Zelinskas9 Ned is not very honorable, because if he was he would gone straight to Robert once he found out the truth about the kids. Jaime saved the entire city of Kingslanding and all its people from being burned alive by Aerys..
Jaime says he has "shit for honor" but he isn't. He loves his younger brother Tyrion so much.
At the age of 15 he was knighted on the battlefield by Ser Arthur Dayne one of the greatest knights that ever lived. He was also fighting against the Kingswood Brotherhood.
@balaalalaslk You mean Ned shoulda gone straight to robert after he found out that Jaime was banging his sister and is the true father to Roberts sons? Perfect example of honor. And he was knighted to piss off his father so he wouldn't inherit Casterly Rock as much as he was for actually deserving it. Jaime is an interesting dude, but honor is something it takes him a bit to find.
@JDriscoll727 Yes he should have gone straight to Robert once he had the proof Jon Arryn died for. Jaime has been insulted, ridiculed, and called Kingslayer for one of the most honorable and good thing he has ever done, which of course fills him with some bitterness and he might think to himself hey if they think i'm evil then fine i'll be evil.
Umm no he was Knighted because he was an exceptional fighter. He was added to the Kingsguard to piss off Tywin, and so he could be close to Cersei
GRRM called Ned a "competent" fighter, not exceptional. Ned got his ass kicked by Bronze Yohn in practice, Jaime was training with Dayne since a teen. The only reason Ned survived his encounter with Dayne is because of Reed. Probably used some creepy swampfolk magic.
@leinad667 But Martin was on-set when they shot this scene, and they asked for his permission to do this. Jaime was fading, his men saw it. Ed had experience on his side, he is used to fighting men up close and personal, Jaime is only used to stabbing them in the back.
LOL no. Jaime is one of the best swords in Westoros, won his first tourney melee at 13, crossed swords with the Smiling Knight and lived to tell the tale at age 15 and was knighted by Dayne that very day and later became the youngest KingsGuard ever. Ned, on the other hand was described as merely "Competent" by Word of God.
Everyone forgets, in the books when they talk about Eddard trying to save his sister from Rhaegar, Ned was the only survivor out of his companions that killed the Sword of the Morning: Arthur Dayne.... From they way everyone hyped up that guy in the books, just surviving him must make Eddard one of the better swordsmen of Westeros. So yea, I think Ned COULD hold his ground with Jamie, or really anyone, in the books. He just never got the chance for a fair fight.
@knightofvictory Ned wasn't the only one to walk away from the fight with Dayne. Out of the 7 who went up against Dayne and the two other Kingsguard only two walked away, Ned and Howland Reed. Added to this Ned explicitly states that he would have been killed by Dayne if not for Reed. Ned is an above average swordsman but nothing special, his older brother Brandon was a much better swordsman.
They made ned WAY stronger in the tv adaption...here he is shown to be almost a match for Jaime Lannister, where as no such implication is made in the books. In the books Ned is never implied to be anything more than an average swordsman at best.....the kingslayer on the other hand is said to be pretty much the finest living swordsman in Westeros, a child prodigy whos skills with a sword are unmatched - Ned is WAY outclassed by him.
@cocaineuk87 could you quote something from the books where it says Ned is only average? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can't remember reading anything regarding Ned's skills as a swordsman whatsoever in the books, be it good, bad or anything at all.
@TheAnon25 Agreed, Every time they have strayed from the books, I wish they had kept the story true. The fight was on horseback and a horse fell on Eddard's leg. The "threatened, as in opening your lord from balls to brain" remark was completely pointless. I love the books, but this is a good series. saj
I just finished the book yesterday and finished the whole series also...I loved the book...but honestly this was way more badass then Neds horse having a spaz and falling on his leg lol
This has got to be one of the few swrdfights in cinema where the actors are actually trying to make openings, take advantage of them, and where the sword blows would actually hit the other person if it wasn't blocked or if he didn't move away. Very good swordplay!!! I'd almost say that it's even better than Achilles vs Hector in Troy.
@OKB74U It's just as scripted as every other swordfight in every other movie. Every single step of these fights is carefully choreographed and religiously practiced for months. The actors weren't trying to do shit beyond follow exactly what the swordfighting choreographer wrote. If it looks better its because the choreographer was better.
@larry123738 And George R.R Martin has said that Renly and Loras shared a romantic relationship, though I still don't see the point of glorifying it in the show when Martin rarely mentioned it in the books, and when he did, it was subtle like what you said with Stannis.
I don't see why people bring up Ned and Jaime's age. Ned is only three years older than Jaime in the books - Sean Bean is eleven years older than Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, so naturally he looks older on screen. The *characters'* ages have nothing do with the either being a superior swordsman. If the scene had taken place in the book, I think it still would've been a close run thing.
For those of you in debate, part of the reason why Jaimie fought Ned was because Jaimie is a great warrior, stubborn of course but he has great fighting skills. Being the way he is, he wants to test himself against other great swordsman, one being Ned Stark. You can't say Ned isn't a good fighter, he defeated the Sword of the Morning, and helped Robert defeat the Targeryeons and win the iron throne. Ned is experience and wise. Jaimie is young, experienced, but stubborn. Its an even match really
Jaime and Ned never had a fight in the books. Ned was trampled by his horse. This is not your Disney Fairytale where the good guy also has to be the greatest warrior.
@deathwagon94 How is saying Ned is a good fighter, implying that this is a Disney Fairytale? I never said Ned was the greatest warrior ever, he is a good warrior though, Catelyn, Robb, King Robert all say it. Why do u think Robb is such a good fighter? He learned from his dad. And Ned helped King Robert win the iron throne. Point is theyre both good fighters,I don't understand why that is so hard to understand. It is clearly implied in the book.
Robb is not a good fighter. He is a good "COMMANDER". Even Loras would own him if they fight one on one. Robert never says anything as such. We never hear it from anyone talking about Ned mentioning his swordsmanship. Not Jaime, not Jorah, Not Ser Barristan,Not BLackfish. None of these guys remember him as a great swordsman when they do remember him. Renly is a better fighter than all the Starks and I am not being sarcastic. At least Renly would take part in tourneys.
@deathwagon94 Renly?!?!? Do you know why in the series he was shown as homosexual? In the books he wasn't gay, he was not manly, he did not fight in tourneys, nor melees, if you read the books you would know, Robb would cut him down, Renly never took much place in fights, and Robb can't be thrown as bad, he was tought by Ser Rodrik Cassel, Castellan and Master at arms of Winterfell, Robb's good but others are much, much better, while Robb is quite green. But commanding, he's genius
Renly did fight in tourneys. I think you need to read A game of thrones at least ten more times. Also I don't think the southern Knights would follow a pussy.
@deathwagon94 Perhaps you should read it 10 times more, Renly was luxurious, war was a game to him, sure he was wise, yet it is known that he never was the manly type, he was loved by the people, despite his weakness, he showed leadership, and I think strategically, if he would've proved himself, he would've been great. But Renly is not what you think he is, it is known.
@FTFproductions09 Renly is gay dude....I think even GRRM confirmed this. They never blatantly showed he's gay in the books but the hints and signs were there. "Rainbow Guard" ring any bells? Jaime's POV making a comment about what Ser Loras struck one time. I didn't notice it b4 but then I started paying attention to the details
@LOLinflames He isn't gay, he's just not manly, war is a joke to him, he doesn't joust, fight, he lives in luxury yet still, he isn't gay, in the books. The name Rainbow guard doesn't tell you anything, it may sound gay to you, but in that time and realm, it does not.
@FTFproductions09 Sorry to break it to you, but Renly is gayer than a bag of dicks. CoK's conversation between Renly and Stannis “...I got Margaery. You’ll be pleased to know she came to me a maid.” “In your bed she’s like to die that way.” Stannis isn't the type to throw meaningless insults. He would only say that if he knew Renly was gay.
@FallenTemplar1405 Not clearly implied unless u start dropping some page numbers and exact quotes where they say anything about his swordsmanship. I think you confuse a good "soldier" to a good "fighter". Soldier could mean anything like loyalty, honor, sword wielder, etc. But Ned has experience with commanding units and has won a couple of sieges in the past so that makes Ned a good COMMANDER mediocre soldier. Robb is also a good tactician LIKE his father but nearly died on his first battle lol
Er... guys, of course Ned is a great swordsman. He killed Ser Arthur Dayne at the Tower of Joy, widely regarded as the greatest fighter in the Seven Kingdoms. Sure, Jaime might be better these days, but Ned can handle himself.
@LOLinflames You know what it is to kill Ser Arthur Dayne? Ned's gotta be given credit for at least holding him off, and he didn't ONLY kill Ser Dayne, Ned slew a bunch of great knights.
@FTFproductions09 everytime i read Ned's and Bran's chapters on that fight it doesn't sound so glorious. There were 7 knights including Ned facing 3 kingsguard. Also once again, from the tone that Bran described when Ned told the story to him and his actual words, Ned almost died if it wasn't for a man named Howland Reed. I say he got lucky
@LOLinflames I didn't say it was glorious, I'm saying that it was THE SWORD IN THE MORNING, man, and Ned's gotta be given credit for at least holding him off.
Eddard is nowhere near the rest of the two. Jaime is a famous knight and is a member of the kingsguard. Only the top seven knights in the whole of westeros get into the Kingsguard. Eddard has never done anything special with the sword even after fighting two wars. Neither Ser Barristan nor Jaime mention his skills in their POV chapters in the books when they were mentioning all the great swordsmen in westeros.
@deathwagon94 You obviously haven't read the books. Kingsguard is supposed to great, are they? No. (minor spoiler) When Jaime himself become kingguard he admits that most of people on it are fools. Several others talk about it well. The Kingsguard used to be some of the best knights in the seven kingdoms but now they're mostly Cerseris pawns. (Forgive the spelling errors)
You are a dolt, ser. It was Aerys who got Jaime into Kingsguard not Cersei. He was trained by Arthur Dayne, who slew the smiling knight . A psycho who was as monstrous as Gregor Clegane. and Ned defeated Arthur Dayne thanks to Howland Reed who has some strange powers. Ned was fighting KG 10 is to 3 and he lost 8 of his men.
@FallenTemplar1405 He say's they're fools at the moment, but when Ser Arthur Dayne commanded, they were not fools at all, they were the finest knights in the Seven Kingdoms, (Spoiler) When Cersie assumes all control she puts whatever she wants in the Kingsguard.
@ihateflags1 The whole "Horse fell on his leg" thing would've been harder to film, and this at least gave Sean Bean another chance to show off his sword skills.
@ihateflags1 This was cheaper to film probably, and more exciting. Plus it gives the opportunity to introduce Tywin Lannister, which also did not happen in the book as it did in the series.
@Mcommander23 that and from what I heard they had to pay a lot of money and went through a lot of trouble to get Sean Bean to play Eddard Stark, they wanted to see him fight
@halofable574 It would have been really tragic if we didn't see him in at least one fight scene. I am hoping that they will do flashbacks with him in them in future series. There are a number of opportunities to do so that could allow him to show off his skills.
@Mcommander23 Wait what happens in the book? my only problem with this scene was it makes Jaime look like even a bigger douche, since he kills jory after they had that nice little chat before.
@killzonephx It has been a while, and I don't have a copy of the first book with me, but if memory serves, Ned and his men (a dozen or so) leave the brothel after finding one of Roberts bastards. They kill Ned's men, a horse falls on Ned and breaks his leg. He and Jaime never actually fight, then Ned wakes up in the Red Keep.
Guys, I'm on the fourth book of the series. In the book these two never fought. Any how, Jaime is a better swordsman than Ned, but being a better swordsman does not matter as much as we think it does. Ned is a really brave man and fierce fighter like Jaime, plus Ned killed Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, with a little help from a friend.
@CaptainPengu The author didn't say he would have died had not it been for Howland Reed, but Bran recalled his father telling him about Ser Dayne: "He would have killed me had it not been for Howland Reed". Bran said Ned was sad about killing a great man, so could be Ned exaggerated a bit.
Any how, Ned was seasoned in killing and battle and the better swordsman doesn't always win. Besides, who's to say Arthur couldn't slay TWO men at once? Ned rocks. :D
@OutswingingYorker I just read the part where he dies, and it was depressing as heck. Im a little dissapointed that he didnt find a way to live, or die defiantly like a hero..... or hey, I would have liked to be able to read about him kicking ass with ice at least once!
He was the best character in the book in my opinion, now that he is dead I dont think Im reading past the first one.
@RecBookHero Dude, no! You HAVE to read past, the books are really epic and don't be a coward ;) This is A Song of Ice and Fire. Not Harry Potter. It's tough, it's gritty. But it is so realistic and so thrilling that you have to read on.
The second book is my favourite so far (I'm on 4). Any how, Ned Stark did ALOT of bad-assery with his blade during Robert's rebellion.
@OutswingingYorker yeah i probably will, the cliff hanger with jon and the others kind of hooked me. It is a great series, I just think killing off ned stark was stupid. Look up hitler finds out eddard starks dies in game of thrones, and thats kind of a summary of what was going on in my head lol
@RecBookHero It was not stupid by any means. That's the thing about this series; it's a dark, gritty world that Martin has created and nobody is safe. Honorable men face death unjustly, just like Jon Arryn did.
@OutswingingYorker Ned's death started the War of the Seven Kingdoms. Later on in the series people just get randomly killed off and it doesn't make as much of an impact anymore.
@squamish4244 By 'nothing' I meant quite obviously that there will be more deaths. And I agree about 30% with you on the deaths issue; Martin needs to put a bit more emotion into the death scenes to give them more impact. Like Ned's death had, you know?
I still think a few of the tough, bad-ass leader guys should be spared. Otherwise Martin's series might become a bit strange for fantasy fans.
@OutswingingYorker Ah I see. Yes, the problem with killing off too many characters is Martin is still trying to tell a story and if everyone's dead, how do you tell the story? But a few key characters are not dead, of course.
@Sarnius26 No, dumb dumb. You know quite well that by "nothing" I meant nothing in terms of how... Rare it was. You misinterpreted my statement, which is okay. Of course everybody felt sad when Ned died.
@Sarnius26 My grammar was fine. Are you a fucking immature 12 year old? Seriously dude, just because you knew your comment was in the wrong sense, don't mean you start a flaming war over the internet. A bit of misinterpretation isn't that hard to swallow. Fucking 12 year old.
@OutswingingYorker 12 years old? Your grammar was fine? I started a Flaming War? My comment was in the wrong sense? Ned's death was nothing? Are you mentally retarded is the question I want answered the most.
@Sarnius26 Asshole, I already explained that by nothing I meant nothing in the sense that many more would die as well! I already explained it. Didn't you read the comment or do you insist on giving my words a meaning I myself didn't intend for them? And again: what was wrong with my grammar?
@CaptainPengu The author tried making it a dramatic surprise, having him confess but still be killed, but it was actually (in my opinion) anti climactic. To me it was a surprise in the way of a football team faking a punt and goes for the first down in the from 20 yards away, and then the kicker throwing an incomplete pass. Unexpected, but pointless. Same with the story, if Eddard died a martyr, or was rescued at the last second it might have been cliche, but I think it would have been better.
@CaptainPengu (cont) Let me put it too you this way, I was counting down pages untill the next Eddard section because I wanted to see how Ned was going to win. When he died, it wasn't sad, I just kind of wanted to hit someone.
@RecBookHero Interesting view. I just thought the death suited Ned simply because of how stubborn and naive he was just to do the right thing. He never learned (or bothered to learn) how complicated and treacherous the politics down south were. In my eyes he was screwed the moment he turned down Renly's offer -- probably his last chance at rectifying SOMETHING. The fact that his death was so anti-climactic was both expected and teeth-grinding for me. "I(THEY) TOLD YOU SO, NED!"
@RecBookHero That's probably for the best. If you can't handle a character in a book dying, even the "good" ones, then you're not going to like the rest of the series.
Its was great fight. You guys can't create a scene of your own and say that if they fought in the book Ned would get crushed lol. Or if the fight had go on Ned or Jaime would've won. C'mon lol G RR Martin invented this series not us. The fight wasn't in the book. This is what happend and its what G RR Martin decided, Ned and Jaime are both great swordsman. Nobody won that fight. It shows you in the video, you cant just ignore that and invent a scene to make your favorite character look better.
Agreed, Jaime is an elite soldier and Eddard was skillful enough to go up against Arthur Dayne, whose supposed to be the greatest knight to ever live. Or did he actually fight Dayne? I don't remember, maybe one of you guys can let me know
@CommanderGene It's left ambiguous, but Ned says that he had 7 men against the 3 Kingsguard and everyone on both sides died except for Ned and Howland Reed. He told Bran that Reed is the only reason he survived the battle, but he never elaborated.
@ShadowSonic2 Exactly: Ned still survived (though Howland is apparently minature badass extreme). Given how many battles Ned survived in his past, I think it's safe to say he's probably a very accomplished swordsman and, no matter the medium, should be a good match for Jaime.
That, and it just makes for a badass scene. I love the books, but this made for much better television than the "horse falls on his leg" of the book would've.
@comradebot GRRM has descriped Jaime multiple times as being basically the best swordsman in the family. He has also stated Ned to be competent, but the true swordfighter was his dead brother.
@SH0WTIME09 Jaime would have won, without a shadow of a doubt. GRRM always made him out to be a near unbeatable warrior during this time, people were terrified of his skills. He never implied Ned to be anything of the sort - a decent soldier, an excellent commander also, but he was never known for his swordsmanship skills.
@cocaineuk87 I think GRRM makes a big deal about Ned being a solider and Ned being humble. Ned rarely takes credit for having any exceptional skills yet 15 years ago he danced with some of the Kingsguard. He may not fight in the jousts and tourneys but he was effective enough that on the right day with the right circumstances he could plausibly kill Jamie. I think it's fairly ambiguous who would have won.
I would agree with that. Jaime was the best swordsman of his time. In the book, the two never fought. I liked this change in the scene here because I'd always WANTED Ed to fight him. Ed may not be as adept and "pretty" with the sword as Jamie is, but living in the north under harsh conditions, Ed's a much more brutal and simplistic fighter with the sword, which I think is why he had Jaime looking surprised - a little underestimation on Jamie's part, perhaps. Great scene.
@xobile101 the starks all got massacred and Ned got stabbed in the heel right in the start of the fight and never even took part in the fight. He just watched his men get slaughtered and then fell unconscious
Top comment is pretty wrong, pay attention to each one, Ned is putting wayyy more effort in than Jaime, who wasn't even trying to kill him. Jaime was dodging those blows with ease. In the books it's clear that Jaime actually is one of the best fighters in the world.
@jcbeta730 yea even though I hate to admit it jaime could have beaten ned pretty easily. He didn't want to kill him as he earlier stated, and in the books he is one of the best fighters even when in shackles
the people saying ned would have one if he hadnt been speared through the leg baffle me...there is nothing in this scene (and especially not in the books) to sugest Jamie was having any problems in this fight, he was matching him blow for blow apparently without too much effort. Jaime would have won either way in my opinion, which is why he is irritated by the guard piercing ned in the leg
@cocaineuk87 Maybe Ned wasn't as good as Jaime, but he was likely the best fighter Jaime has ever fought, that's why he was so pissed the guard speared Ned. Jaime wanted to defeat Ned himself, it was the best fight of his life.

OKB74U 1 month ago
@OKB74U It's just as scripted as every other swordfight in every other movie. Every single step of these fights is carefully choreographed and religiously practiced for months. The actors weren't trying to do shit beyond follow exactly what the swordfighting choreographer wrote. If it looks better its because the choreographer was better.
jkyleh20polo 1 month ago
@larry123738 And George R.R Martin has said that Renly and Loras shared a romantic relationship, though I still don't see the point of glorifying it in the show when Martin rarely mentioned it in the books, and when he did, it was subtle like what you said with Stannis.
Sayshinator 1 month ago

FallenTemplar1405 1 month ago
@FallenTemplar1405
Lol who the fuck told you this?
Jaime and Ned never had a fight in the books. Ned was trampled by his horse. This is not your Disney Fairytale where the good guy also has to be the greatest warrior.
deathwagon94 1 month ago
@deathwagon94 How is saying Ned is a good fighter, implying that this is a Disney Fairytale? I never said Ned was the greatest warrior ever, he is a good warrior though, Catelyn, Robb, King Robert all say it. Why do u think Robb is such a good fighter? He learned from his dad. And Ned helped King Robert win the iron throne. Point is theyre both good fighters,I don't understand why that is so hard to understand. It is clearly implied in the book.
FallenTemplar1405 1 month ago
@FallenTemplar1405
At least Renly would take part in tourneys.
deathwagon94 1 month ago
@deathwagon94 Renly?!?!? Do you know why in the series he was shown as homosexual? In the books he wasn't gay, he was not manly, he did not fight in tourneys, nor melees, if you read the books you would know, Robb would cut him down, Renly never took much place in fights, and Robb can't be thrown as bad, he was tought by Ser Rodrik Cassel, Castellan and Master at arms of Winterfell, Robb's good but others are much, much better, while Robb is quite green. But commanding, he's genius

@FTFproductions09
Renly is 6 feet 6 .Ned thinks he is as muscular as a young Robert. Robb is shorter than Joffrey :D :D
deathwagon94 1 month ago
@FTFproductions09
Renly did fight in tourneys. I think you need to read A game of thrones at least ten more times. Also I don't think the southern Knights would follow a pussy.
deathwagon94 1 month ago
@deathwagon94 Perhaps you should read it 10 times more, Renly was luxurious, war was a game to him, sure he was wise, yet it is known that he never was the manly type, he was loved by the people, despite his weakness, he showed leadership, and I think strategically, if he would've proved himself, he would've been great. But Renly is not what you think he is, it is known.
FTFproductions09 1 month ago
@FTFproductions09 Renly is gay dude....I think even GRRM confirmed this. They never blatantly showed he's gay in the books but the hints and signs were there. "Rainbow Guard" ring any bells? Jaime's POV making a comment about what Ser Loras struck one time. I didn't notice it b4 but then I started paying attention to the details
LOLinflames 1 month ago
@LOLinflames He isn't gay, he's just not manly, war is a joke to him, he doesn't joust, fight, he lives in luxury yet still, he isn't gay, in the books. The name Rainbow guard doesn't tell you anything, it may sound gay to you, but in that time and realm, it does not.
FTFproductions09 1 month ago
@FTFproductions09 Sorry to break it to you, but Renly is gayer than a bag of dicks. CoK's conversation between Renly and Stannis “...I got Margaery. You’ll be pleased to know she came to me a maid.” “In your bed she’s like to die that way.” Stannis isn't the type to throw meaningless insults. He would only say that if he knew Renly was gay.
larry123738 1 month ago
@FallenTemplar1405 Not clearly implied unless u start dropping some page numbers and exact quotes where they say anything about his swordsmanship. I think you confuse a good "soldier" to a good "fighter". Soldier could mean anything like loyalty, honor, sword wielder, etc. But Ned has experience with commanding units and has won a couple of sieges in the past so that makes Ned a good COMMANDER mediocre soldier. Robb is also a good tactician LIKE his father but nearly died on his first battle lol

@FTFproductions09 everytime i read Ned's and Bran's chapters on that fight it doesn't sound so glorious. There were 7 knights including Ned facing 3 kingsguard. allshallbelosttoyou 1 month ago
@allshallbelosttoyou
Eddard is nowhere near the rest of the two. Jaime is a famous knight and is a member of the kingsguard. Only the top seven knights in the whole of westeros get into the Kingsguard. Eddard has never done anything special with the sword even after fighting two wars. Neither Ser Barristan nor Jaime mention his skills in their POV chapters in the books when they were mentioning all the great swordsmen in westeros.
deathwagon94 1 month ago
@deathwagon94 You obviously haven't read the books. Kingsguard is supposed to great, are they? No. (minor spoiler) When Jaime himself become kingguard he admits that most of people on it are fools. Several others talk about it well. The Kingsguard used to be some of the best knights in the seven kingdoms but now they're mostly Cerseris pawns. (Forgive the spelling errors)
FallenTemplar1405 1 month ago
@FallenTemplar1405
You are a dolt, ser. It was Aerys who got Jaime into Kingsguard not Cersei. He was trained by Arthur Dayne, who slew the smiling knight . @killzonephx It has been a while, and I don't have a copy of the first book with me, but if memory serves, Ned and his men (a dozen or so) leave the brothel after finding one of Roberts bastards. Guys, I'm on the fourth book of the series. In the book these two never fought. Any how, Jaime is a better swordsman than Ned, but being a better swordsman does not matter as much as we think it does. OutswingingYorker 1 month ago
@OutswingingYorker you said a little help I think
but I remember the books saying that the only reason Ned survived that fight was because of Reed.
but given that GRRM approved this particular scene over the arguably more boring one in the book I think says a lot about Ned's swordfighting!
CaptainPengu 1 month ago
@CaptainPengu The author didn't say he would have died had not it been for Howland Reed, but Bran recalled his father telling him about Ser Dayne: "He would have killed me had it not been for Howland Reed". Bran said Ned was sad about killing a great man, so could be Ned exaggerated a bit.
Any how, Ned was seasoned in killing and battle and the better swordsman doesn't always win. Besides, who's to say Arthur couldn't slay TWO men at once? Ned rocks. :D
OutswingingYorker 1 month ago
@OutswingingYorker I just read the part where he dies, and it was depressing as heck. Im a little dissapointed that he didnt find a way to live, or die defiantly like a hero..... or hey, I would have liked to be able to read about him kicking ass with ice at least once!

RecBookHero 1 month ago
@RecBookHero Dude, no! You HAVE to read past, the books are really epic and don't be a coward ;) This is A Song of Ice and Fire. Not Harry Potter. It's tough, it's gritty. But it is so realistic and so thrilling that you have to read on.
The second book is my favourite so far (I'm on 4). Any how, Ned Stark did ALOT of bad-assery with his blade during Robert's rebellion.
OutswingingYorker 1 month ago
@OutswingingYorker yeah i probably will, the cliff hanger with jon and the others kind of hooked me. It is a great series, I just think killing off ned stark was stupid. Look up hitler finds out eddard starks dies in game of thrones, and thats kind of a summary of what was going on in my head lol
RecBookHero 3 weeks ago
@RecBookHero It was not stupid by any means. That's the thing about this series; it's a dark, gritty world that Martin has created and nobody is safe. Honorable men face death unjustly, just like Jon Arryn did.
Ned's death is nothing. Read on.
OutswingingYorker 3 weeks ago 15
@OutswingingYorker Ned's death started the War of the Seven Kingdoms. Later on in the series people just get randomly killed off and it doesn't make as much of an impact anymore.
squamish4244 1 week ago
@squamish4244 By 'nothing' I meant quite obviously that there will be more deaths. And I agree about 30% with you on the deaths issue; Martin needs to put a bit more emotion into the death scenes to give them more impact. Like Ned's death had, you know?
I still think a few of the tough, bad-ass leader guys should be spared. Otherwise Martin's series might become a bit strange for fantasy fans.
OutswingingYorker 1 week ago
@OutswingingYorker Ah I see. Yes, the problem with killing off too many characters is Martin is still trying to tell a story and if everyone's dead, how do you tell the story? But a few key characters are not dead, of course.

@squamish4244 Yeah, he needs to make sure he does not entirely lose the story that the series began with.

OutswingingYorker 20 hours ago
@RecBookHero how was it stupid? Just curious
CaptainPengu 3 weeks ago
@CaptainPengu The author tried making it a dramatic surprise, having him confess but still be killed, but it was actually (in my opinion) anti climactic. To me it was a surprise in the way of a football team faking a punt and goes for the first down in the from 20 yards away, and then the kicker throwing an incomplete pass. Unexpected, but pointless. Same with the story, if Eddard died a martyr, or was rescued at the last second it might have been cliche, but I think it would have been better.
RecBookHero 3 weeks ago
@CaptainPengu (cont) Let me put it too you this way, I was counting down pages untill the next Eddard section because I wanted to see how Ned was going to win. When he died, it wasn't sad, I just kind of wanted to hit someone.
RecBookHero 3 weeks ago
@RecBookHero Interesting view. I just thought the death suited Ned simply because of how stubborn and naive he was just to do the right thing. He never learned (or bothered to learn) how complicated and treacherous the politics down south were. In my eyes he was screwed the moment he turned down Renly's offer -- probably his last chance at rectifying SOMETHING. The fact that his death was so anti-climactic was both expected and teeth-grinding for me. "I(THEY) TOLD YOU SO, NED!"

@CommanderGene It's left ambiguous, but Ned says that he had 7 men against the 3 Kingsguard and everyone on both sides died except for Ned and Howland Reed. He told Bran that Reed is the only reason he survived the battle, but he never elaborated.
ShadowSonic2 1 month ago
@ShadowSonic2 Exactly: Ned still survived (though Howland is apparently minature badass extreme). Given how many battles Ned survived in his past, I think it's safe to say he's probably a very accomplished swordsman and, no matter the medium, should be a good match for Jaime.
That, and it just makes for a badass scene. I love the books, but this made for much better television than the "horse falls on his leg" of the book would've.

Still it takes some monster cojones to take on a dozen guardsmen, but none to arrive with a posse and attack two ageing warriors.
fantasticmoose 1 month ago
@SH0WTIME09 Jaime would have won, without a shadow of a doubt. GRRM always made him out to be a near unbeatable warrior during this time, people were terrified of his skills. He never implied Ned to be anything of the sort - a decent soldier, an excellent commander also, but he was never known for his swordsmanship skills.
cocaineuk87 2 weeks ago
@cocaineuk87 I think GRRM makes a big deal about Ned being a solider and Ned being humble. Ned rarely takes credit for having any exceptional skills yet 15 years ago he danced with some of the Kingsguard. He may not fight in the jousts and tourneys but he was effective enough that on the right day with the right circumstances he could plausibly kill Jamie. I think it's fairly ambiguous who would have won.
Sabu113 2 weeks ago
@cocaineuk87
Beergut222 2 weeks ago

Top comment is pretty wrong, pay attention to each one, Ned is putting wayyy more effort in than Jaime, who wasn't even trying to kill him. Jaime was dodging those blows with ease. In the books it's clear that Jaime actually is one of the best fighters in the world.
jcbeta730 2 months ago
@jcbeta730 yea even though I hate to admit it jaime could have beaten ned pretty easily. He didn't want to kill him as he earlier stated, and in the books he is one of the best fighters even when in shackles
suqies 2 months ago
the people saying ned would have one if he hadnt been speared through the leg baffle me...there is nothing in this scene (and especially not in the books) to sugest Jamie was having any problems in this fight, he was matching him blow for blow apparently without too much effort. Jaime would have won either way in my opinion, which is why he is irritated by the guard piercing ned in the leg
cocaineuk87 2 months ago
@cocaineuk87 Maybe Ned wasn't as good as Jaime, but he was likely the best fighter Jaime has ever fought, that's why he was so pissed the guard speared Ned. Jaime wanted to defeat Ned himself, it was the best fight of his life.
