  • @Passenger95 how are you getting that very dark, sustained tone that you're applying all that echo to? in another of your videos you should a double-delay rig, but that doesn't seem to account for the hollowness or longevity of the base chord. I've tried getting the same results by essentially maxing out a chamber-type reverb, but the results are never as mellow as yours.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • @johnnyrockittunes Thanks!

  • how can i acquire a similar sound with a Boss ME-25 muliti effectÇ

  • @SJ9495 I'm not incredibly familiar with that module. How many effects can you run at once on it?

  • can you do this with only having one amp? how exactly do you use 2 different amps at once?

  • @tygolf11 You can if your amp has two channels, but it starts to sound mushy. The pads are pre-recorded, and run on a completely separate rig than the guitar sounds. The beginning part of the video just shows how I record the pads. :)

  • @Passenger95 thanks so much! you are the man!

  • @Passenger95 "I am free"-Newsboys. You sir are awesome! =)

  • @Kento617 haha As covered from Desperation Band. As ripped off from U2. ;) ;) hehe

  • @Passenger95 what mike do you record with and do you use any sound system recordings

  • @TheResonating Some of my music is with a 57, some with a Sennhesier 609, and my preferred one is a Shure 58 blue ring. I'll use Garage Band, Audacity, Logic, etc. If you can get the sound right coming out of the amp, then you don't need any fancy recording software or effects. :)

  • that's over 4,000$ of equipment he has got there. :)

  • @Terminal331 Hopefully I didn't spend that much. :)

  • 8 string ambient =) watch?v=Y_wBTogl4Fg

  • How do you keep just one swell going and going? i have the Boss DD-20 and cant quite seem to get my swells/pad sounds to last long enough for a good worship setting.

  • @chanmaster5000 Swelling in more chords before the previous ones die out. Put an analog delay after your DD20, and it will meld everything together for you. :)

  • @Passenger95 so i have the el capistan and carbon copy.....are you sayin to put the carbon copy in front of my elcapistan i also have a dd-6 but i never use it

  • @superreverbfreak I'd put the Carbon Copy after the Capistan, so that it melds the repeats of the Capistan together. See, you need a lot of space in between the repeats so that the sound doesn't die out. But then it sounds awkward. So you use the Carbon Copy to take all those repeats and mesh them together.

  • @Passenger95 I did that along with buying the Boss RV-5 Reverb. With the RV5 on modulate and the dd-20 on modulate, my swells are PERFECT!! Just like yours :)

  • @chanmaster5000 Right on, man!

  • you must be loaded with money...how do you afford all of those amps?...they cost a fortune :(

  • @oprahdidntdie4ursins Well, I drive a 16-year-old car, live in a small apartment, save all I can, and am patient on craigslist. Ended up getting both those amps for 50-60% below retail price.

  • @Passenger95 they don't get mad at the noise you make?

  • @777jordan They don't get mad at the music, and I don't call the cops when they have 3 am parties on a Tuesday. It's a little unspoken agreement we have. :)

  • Good lord! that is the single most beautifull thing i have ever heard a guitarplayer do! the system you have created is SUCH awesome!! whoa! *.*

  • @moniquefrerix Thanks a ton!! :D

  • fantastic idea. well done.

  • @andyhoochie Thanks!

  • what type of guitar is that?

  • @ascities777 Prairiewood hardtop. Rob Dixon makes 'em. :)

  • nice stuff =)

  • @TheNatsu1999 Thanks! :-)

  • @Passenger95 That is a Prairiewood Hardtop. Robert Dixon makes them. :-)

  • dude i beg you make a soundtrack or somethin ! I want to hear more ! You reach my soul with this sound ! 5* , perfect tone !

  • @AngelFromHeaven000 Thanks for the kind words! And if you click the link right under the video, or search 'Karl Verkade' at Bandcamp, you'll find an album I recorded, as well as a soundtrack with a written story. All sound sort of like this video. :-)

  • alnico blues in thatcab?

  • @joshuarugg Yep! One Blue, and one G12H30.

  • @Passenger95 i have blues in my AC30 im going to buy a silver dog from webber. alot of people including myself find if you have a cab with 2 blues, it tents to get harsh in the treble and lackin in bass. too crisp for my taste. the solution is to use a silver bell or G12H-30 like you. did you know, the edge from U2 uses a blue and a silver bell/dog in his ac30's? thats his key to an amazing sound :)

  • @joshuarugg Right on! And ya...I have to admit that's the reason I have this setup. haha

  • @Passenger95 all of us in the worship music scene look up to "Edge". bwahah

  • @joshuarugg The spirit only flows through dotted 8th delay. ;)

  • Beautifull...

  • @BEllsmaker Thank you! :-)

  • Cool stuff!!!!!New to you tube....love your tone...

  • @jasonfinnern Thanks a ton! :-)

  • holy shit that it is a crazy thick guitar! what does that bastard weigh?

  • @scorpguitar79 A lot. :-) I've never weighed it, but it's really heavy.

  • Nice! I do a similar thing, but I use two Roland multi fx/preamps a/b'ed and I use the 4 second delays on one to fire off the 'pad', then switch to the other to play over it. I've just started putting my analog delay in the loop to warm/wet it up a bit. Being only a 4 sec delay means it's a bit more of a drone than yours, but it's as close as I get to meditating. It's great to see someone elses take on it.

  • @Spyroid77 Nice! That sounds like it'd work great!

  • So what is your effects chain for the pad sound... like a breakdown of the effects to create the ambient pad sound. Digital delay @ what %feedback and whatnot. I'm assuming there is two delays and a shimmer reverb in there... but what exactly is going on... it sounds amazing.

  • @MMAJustice Thanks! It's basically a phaser into a volume pedal, and then into a digital delay at about 60 bpm with a heavy mix of repeats. After that, it runs through an analog delay for warmth and modulation, another digital delay at a low mix and multitap setting for spaciousness, and then a 250 ms analog delay that acts almost as a chorus to wash things out and meld them together. :-)

  • How do you get it to sustain so long?

  • @MattyEatWorld1 Just a long repeat and time setting on a digital delay. :-) A good sustainy guitar helps, too.

  • If you don't mind me asking, at 6:10, which effects/pedals are you using to get your sound there?

  • @runtor1988 I think that's the pad in the background, and then the Timeline at a dotted quarter setting, and a second Timeline at a low mix multitap setting for reverb-ish sounds. :-)

  • hey man!

if you could help me out a bit that would be great,

I was wondering what pad I should get if I wanna make some ambient music

    thankyou!

  • @CanadianDutchman As in, creating your own pad? I'd get a good digital delay, an analog delay to help wash it out, and a volume pedal. :-) If that wasn't what you were asking, feel free to message me! Cheers!

  • sounds like mono

  • @moemoe20092007 I love Mono!

  • @Passenger95 I hope you appreciate jrock too haha ^ ^

  • @moemoe20092007 I have no idea what that is. :-)

  • @Passenger95 umm.. well its japanese rock haha.. :p

  • @moemoe20092007 Oh, haha. And I was all searching for the band Jrock. lol

  • @Passenger95 Lol it's a genre :p bands like gazette, dir en grey or gackt*not a band*.. they are really good,

  • I Am Free... Newsboys?

  • @chapintex1 Yep! hehe Well, I am Free as written by Desperation Band, who totally ripped off U2. :-)

  • @Passenger95 haha yeah, totally

  • what pedals are you using in this video? and what kind of ernie ball pedal are you using?

  • @Glencse Oh wow, it's been awhile. Um, two Damage Control Timeline delays, a Diamond Memory Lane, an Arion SAD-1, and probably a Subdecay Quasar. The Ernie Ball is just the regular mono 250k volume pedal. :-)

  • Comment removed

  • edge called, he wants his sound back;)

  • @IStehSHIT If only... hehe ;-)

  • wow...im totally rolling on some pleasent e... and this is amazing to drift to.

  • @daveyjones2015 Thanks! :-)

  • I like! ...and your gear and your posters too!

  • @stirfrycomedy Breakfast Club all the way!! hehe

  • I got goose pimples. :-O

  • @DJSKYWALKERONE Thanks! :-)

  • Sound like something Steven Wilson could use, as a trancition piece eventually.

  • @SkeksisBestSongEver Cool! :-)

  • nice gear. is that a memory man?

  • @tylerdwells Thanks. And I think it was a Matchless Hotbox. I don't have it anymore. Have a great day!

  • @Passenger95 whups. i meant Diamond Memory Lane. not memory man.

  • @tylerdwells Oh, haha. Gotcha! :-)

  • wht is this guys peddle set up?

  • @rickythegreat1 I don't remember exactly what it was at the time this was recorded, but my current one is on my blog which you can link to right under the video. :-) Cheers!

  • oh my god dude me and you would make music in 30 seconds

  • @cookie88monster haha That'd be awesome! I'm open to jam anytime.

  • I was just looking, how cool would it be if you could sync up those TimeLines!?

  • @DemoColorScheme You could do it with a midi splitter...but I use them for different sounds and tempo's so much, that it wouldn't be worth it for me. Whenever I need them at the same tempo, I just work on my rhythmic skills to tap the same into each of them. hehe :-) But mostly, I need them at different measures of the same tempo, or one or both of them a-tempo'd completely.

  • @Passenger95

No, I don't mean at the same tempo. But let's say you save 1 patch on your MIDI device and it uses two TimeLines. 1 with dotted 8ths and one with a quarter note. That would be really interesting. You could switch them on at the same time and they'd be aligned exactly like how you'd like 'em. I never turn mine off, by the way. Whenever I don't use it on a patch, I turn everything down and save that. So, if you'd have a patch where you'd just use one, you could do that with one.

  • @DemoColorScheme Ah! Totally! I gotcha. So ya, for now, when I want a sound like that, with one on quarters and one on dotted 8ths, I just call up two different patches, and I have to remember which two are sync'd up right. I suppose it's an extra step, but I think I'd get two confused if I had them sync'd up, but then had to hit an extra switch to un-sync them when I needed that! hehe Don't think my brain could handle it, mate! :-)

  • @Passenger95

Hm! Well, I don't think it works like that. You recall a preset (on both units) and when you want to change it, you simply tap a different tempo or go to the next patch. Doesn't sound hard to me, but okay. :D It's not like I'll ever have 2 TimeLines. I'm good with 1.

  • @DemoColorScheme Hmm...I'm so sorry bro, I must be misunderstanding what you're saying. I think I'm talking about something totally different, and now I realize I must have been lost from the beginning! haha

As far as just the sound of sync'd Timeline's it's great! Sometimes I'll do quarters into the first one, and then dotted 8ths into the second, tap the same tempo, and it can get quite rhythmic. I like it!

And apologies for my not understanding. :-)

  • @Passenger95

    That's okay man! :D

  • Really great!

  • @1milanmit Thanks! :-)

  • lol can u say angels and airwaves lol but still pretty cool!

  • @lespualbmb haha Well, to be fair, Angels and Airwaves is a pretty obvious ripoff of U2. And everything I do is pretty much a ripoff of U2 as well. Just so we're straight on which band I'm ripping off. lol :-) Cheers!

  • @Passenger95 lol thats very true

  • @lespualbmb :-)

  • This is the best thing ever,

  • @Darickxuma Thanks! :-)

  • Mmmm. I love that. Reminds me of Hillsong United. I'm trying to get this sound so bad.

  • @TheUkeMasta Thanks! Have an awesome day. :-)

  • Awesome soundscape! Come join us at TGP-I recently started a thread about these textural ambient sounds and mentioned your work. DemoColorScheme and Andy Othling are also participating.

  • @8888guitarman Wow, thanks, bro! I'll go check it out. Gear Page is the best. :-)

  • Dude, how long of a delay are you using to record your pads? I've tried mine with a quarter note delay with like a million repeats and it never stays as solid a pad sound as yours does... I don't get it.

  • @Blauto83 The trick is to set your delay time right at the point where is still delays for a long time, but isn't so long that it 'hears' your throw on the volume pedal or volume knob. And then you have to give a real gradual and 'touchy-feely' swell on the volume pedal or knob. And then of course, a lot of repeats on the delay. Then, every 2 or 3 seconds, you swell another chord. Usually the same chord, or same chord with a 9th or maj7th or something. Then, you add in some analog delay...

  • @Blauto83 ...after the digital delay to kind of meld everything together and take some of the definition away so that it sounds more like one solid pad. :-) Hope that helps!

  • Great! it reminds me Michael Rother!!!

  • @logonazo Thanks! :-)

  • what are you using to record the swells?

  • @mubudubum I use a laptop now, but at the time of this video it was a Fostex MR-8. :-)

  • what's the name of the head in 65 amp?

  • @TheElmore95 In this video, that's a Divided by 13 RSA23. Cheers!

  • what kind of delay do you use man? it's incredible

  • @onebrootaldood The Damage Control Timeline. Ya, it's a rad pedal...makes you sound better than you are. hehe

  • since your looping in the key of D are you only swelling the root note which is d or do you swell all chords in they key of D?cuz it seems like your swelling different types of 'd'. ie d -inversion-sus-sus4. awesome playing :) cheers

  • @z3332948 Yep! Exactly! Mostly 1's, 3's, and 5's. Then some 2's and 7's for color. 4's to be able to fall back on the 3, and almost never 6's. :-)

  • is that "Free To Run" as played by Desperation Band?? :)

  • @danielgutie lol Yep! Or Streets Have No Name. Same song. hehe

  • this is great I love it. I use my m13 to layer some ambient melodies between songs. Got some vids up, soundscaping etc. check it out=)

  • cool stuff man! well done.

check out mine and let me know what you think.

    cheers

  • Love it!

  • What's that recorder called? I couldn't quite make out the name in the video

  • It's the Fostex MR-8. Cheers!

  • That's beautiful...

  • Thanks! :-)

  • mann all those lights everywhere .. ur rig is short of the mothership!!! and that ambient sounds is the calling to come home .. lol

  • haha If they asked, and there were some ambient sounds playing, I'd probably go. haha

  • I really love this.

Could you recommend me a pretty good delay pedal that doesn't cost that much?

    5/5

  • In my humble opinion, the best delay for the least amount of money is the Boss DD20. It sounds great, is very functional, and is highly underrated. :-) Hope that helps a bit!

  • great stuff dude!

can you recommend a pedal (reverb, echo...) that makes the tone last very long or maybe endlessly? lookin for one to get the sound like you got. maybe like Stars of the Lid, if you know them.

  • Um, if you get a fuzz, into a volume pedal, a Boss DD20, and a Boss RV3, that should get you right into infinite territory. :-) Hope that helps! Cheers!

  • I am Free!

  • lol Yep. :-)

  • great sound dude.

  • Thanks a lot! Have a great day!

  • i love this

  • Thanks for the kind words. Cheers!

  • Thanks for the kind words. :-) Cheers!

  • wow man very inspiring! i have boss GT8 (multi fx pedal) but I notticed the seperate pedals sound a lot more realistic so I really want to get a bunch of those! any suggestions?

  • Oh wow! There's so much good stuff out there. Send me a message with your budget and what styles of music you play, and I'll do my best to recommend some stuff. :-) Cheers!

  • Hey men, jaja

    I love your sounds jaja

could you tell me what Fostex product are U using???

U are gonna be my inspiration jaja

    GBU

  • Thanks for the kind words. It's the Fostex MR8. :-) Cheers!

  • Dude, insane sounds!! :D SOunds amazing!! Any tips on running your phaser pedal?? I'll hopefully be getting a phaser for christmas.. I see your running it on slow and deep, is that just so its a lil more spacey sounding?? Keep it up man and check out my sounds if u have time!! :D

  • Thanks for the kind words, and I'll definitely check out your vids as well. And yes, I like the phaser sounds slow and washy. So speed is up only enough to hear the phase pattern, and then depth and mix are very high. The key is to get a phaser that will go slow, because a lot won't. Hope that helps! Cheers!

  • May I ask what exact pedals you are using to get that pad sound? It looks like you have some Damage Control pedals down there, so just wondering what you're using for the pads. I'd like to make some loops for our worship sets at church so any info would be great.

  • Ya. The exact chain is:

Subdecay Quasar phaser (slow, deep setting)-->

    George Dennis active volume pedal-->

Damage Control Timeline digital delay (long time, long repeats)-->

Diamond Memory Lane analog delay (high modulation)-->

Damage Control Timeline digital delay (multitap setting, low mix, high repeats)-->

Arion SAD-1 analog delay (low time, chorusy setting).

  • Awesome, thanks man. Now alls I need to do is save the upwards of $700 just for the 2 timelines, lol. Good stuff man!

  • Ya, they're up there in price. I was lucky and got mine for about $200 each used, before they were as popular. Thank goodness for ebay and Gear Page! hehe :-) Cheers!

  • lol, no doubt man. have you ever used a line 6 m13 before? they have some sounds like this that are built in.

  • Eh...I'm not too into multi-effects pedals. I do think the M13 sounds very good, though. I'm just too much of a jerk, and think I have to have all the individual pedals! haha

  • Tell me you're in some type of post-rock band that I haven't heard of before :).

  • hehe Wish I was! :-) Unfortunately, nope. Thanks for watching!

  • d13 and 65amps.... jeez.

  • Ya, it seems a bit much, huh? But the 65 Amps is just a cab, so it's not like there's two post 3 grand amps here. And actually, I buy all my stuff used, so even though this rig here is made up of 'expensive' and 'boutique' gear, it actually cost me less than trying to by a rig of mass produced gear at Guitar Center. :-) Craigslist, ebay, and GearPage! lol They're the best. Cheers!

  • full demo of pedal board?????? lol

  • hehe I promise, I'll try one of these days! It's just that my board changes so much, I always think I'll do it whenever I settle on my pedals for a month or so. But it never happens. lol :-)

  • JESUS!!!!!!!! you gotta have more money in pedals than i do in my car bro! sweet. love the stuff man

any tips you have for creating ambient stuff? i'm aiming to have that kinda thing going in my youth group at alter call....

  • To tell you the truth, I've got more money in gear than I do in my car. hehe I don't even have cable, and I live in an apartment...I guess I just have my drug of choice. hehe

As for tips, most of what I'm doing can be done decently with two delay pedals. A digital one set to a longish time with a good amount of repeats, and an analog one coming after it. Then just work the volume knob. That's the basic concept, and everything else I'm doing just kind of adds more to that idea. :-) Cheers!

  • when you say coming after it do you mean longer, shorter or same time?

  • A little shorter, with lots of repeats. Warms and melds it together. Sorry I saw this so late! I think I just sent you a message about it, too. Cheers!

  • Dude I don't understand any of this stuff but it just sounds so amazing I am going to figure out how to do it if it takes a lifetime.

  • hehe Thanks for the kind words! Once you get used to it, or watch the video through a few more times, it's actually far less complicated than it appears at first. :-) Have a great day!
