You need a real good stereo to hear the deep, deep mega-bass drum in the chorus. It's on beat 14 and 16 but I can't hear it on these speakers. Big ol' honkin' concert bass drum. So low it "Hertz"! Get it?
@localcrew Thanks so much for this comment! I love this record, and listened to it on cassette tape for years, at a landscaping job, which provided the tunes and no real quality audio experience. Though even at 16 bit I never heard that concert drum, which I can hear plainly here with headphones.
What I love about Steely Dan and any Walter' or Donald' associated videos is: they always attract intelligent, deep listeners who educate through comments, and revelation of minutiae. :-)
@avengerspeel & matthewdnorris Fagen's voice: utterly unique, not a "singer"'s voice, but absolutely pitch-perfect. That is rare. I wish I could sing like him.
Nunca hubiera podido conocer este genio de la música sin el programa de Mabela Martínez y Tito Barreto "Stereo Jazz". Gracias Mabela y Tito, son unos locos por la buena música.
@TheDeviousMuzik - me, too! this song will definitely transform you to a sunnier place, and a sunnier disposition great job, mr. fagen. jeff porcaro was an awesome drummer and percussionist. RIP, mr porcaro. credit should be given, as well, to rob mounsey and starz vanderlocket for the percussion on this song.
Close your eyes and lean back and I swear I am either in Jamaica or the Caribbean on the beach sipping a drink with fruit & a little umbrella in it.What a cool jam this is, the very first cd I ever bought(in fact I didnt even own a cd player yet)on my birthday I got a cd player & 125.00 dollars and went out and bought all seven original cd's My fav albums(at that point) by years #1-1973 #2-1977 # 3-1976# 4-1974# 5-1975# 6-1980# 7-1972(David Palmer ruined a great debut album-he was awful)
I agree it's hard to beat the original, but the Torme' version has its charms. Plus, those of us who own The Nightfly album have less of a reason to listen to it on YouTube. The Mel Torme' rendition is something of a novelty.
I owned this album like 4 times, I mean it started out on vinyl, then to cassette , then to cd, just wore it out from playing it so much....the whole album is incredible!!!
Flaws make drama. Fagen's voice creates a romance out of such drama - a voice that plays it awkwardly safe behind, say, sparkling sunglasses, cloudy cigars and hedged bets, then plunges headlong into a near suicide of coolness. I assume all the best art does that in its way.
I honestly think what happened was they needed a singer in the beginning (like after their singer quit or something) and he filled in, haha. Thenn...after a few gigs of not being able to find a singer to fill in, he kept singing cause it working. Really, he's not a very good 'singer', but his singing is awesome. It's odd and so unique. Imo, it's partly why they can do what they do. :-)
@matthewdnorris Kind of like Macy Gray filling in for her absentee vocalist at the recording of her first album. Got it. But I don't understand how someone could not be a very good singer, but sing awesomely. His voice gives me an erection every time I hear it. His vibrato, tone, delivery, phrasing and timing is spectacular. Maybe not for Fiddler on the Roof, but to tackle jazz?
@matthewdnorris I recently learned that "Gretchen" was indeed a character in Ross MacDonald's "The Goodbye Look," some characters of which enjoyed Cuban Breezes. The story doesn't match the story in this song, however. Still...how he weaves his immense literary knowledge into these provocative verses is beyond genius, imho.
This song is about that Bastard Fidel Castro when his communist rebels took over Cuba and people were scrambling to get out of there. "The goodbye look" ment he was going to be shot in a public exceution as were countless others.
I once saw a woman sitting at a restaurant talking to her man after a swim on the beach. The sun lifted the glistening waves of her long black hair, the glow of her golden brown skin, and the flawlessly delicate features so gracefully that I was witnessing a living airbrushed beauty. I had to drink this vision in. Fagan's voice does the same to me. He doesn't just delight my senses; he sets my soul on fire, like something not of this world.
Yes, this whole album is absolutely amazing, but this one track is a driver... I'm either gambling in Monte Carlo or just parlaying in Venice Beach, CA. I love this song... The rules have changed, its not the same, it's all new players in a whole new ball game... deal me another hand, and pour me another Cuban breeze, Gretchen. I'm 21 again and taking big risks again... haha. lol
First heard this on my friend's portable CD player at 2am on a bus from the border to Mexico City. Pitch dark, the cabin's asleep, good air conditioning, who knows where the hell we are. This song and album augured a week in el DF that was just as mysterious and beautiful. Thanks for posting this.
One person obviously got the goodbye look.

You know this can't be anyone but Donald Fagen singing when he says the word "beach."
Even on an album full of the optimism of his youth, he can't help but put something like this in. And that's why we love him.
