I remember back then when people work for a living building this country up to the highest standards in the world. NOW THOSE SAME PEOPLES CHILDEREN WHANT EVERTHING FOR NOTHING AND ARE THE GREEDYEST PEOPLE ON EARTH AND DON"T CARE ABOUT ANYBODY BUT THEMSELFS NOT EVEN THEIR OWN.
Be U Ti Ful!!! Ladies & Voices! How did I not see how great all these girl groups were ? Of course I Was about 6 or 7 at the time, but that's no excuse! They're beautiful! What a great song.
This was back when I Love You was the best thing you could hear, boy or girl. Before it became "The Dreaded L Word" . . and slow dancing with a little making out was the best Friday night you could hope for.
I understand the sexism inherant in a lot of the songs from back in the day. But honestly, as a guy, to be worthy of the depth of love and longing in some of these songs, would make me a really great guy. Heart and soul I beg to be adored, lost control, I tumbled overboard!
The music world has yet to pay the proper tribute to early female groups like the "Chantels", with their seamless harmonies and powerful, yet graceful lead vocals that told stories of a simpler time when young love had a sense of innocence and purity. I will listen to them always with fond memories of a time gone by.
They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of FameThey should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of FameThey should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of FameThey should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of FameThey should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Heaven's own angels can't possibly sing much better than The Chantels. EVERY female vocal group beyond them -of whatever skin pigmentation- owes homage to this group. They're the ones since rock and roll's dawning in 1955 that knocked down the barriers and set the standard. Amazing women.
Ah back in the good old days when music wasnt a complete meaningless disgrace, when artists had to be gifted to become famous and have to work hard for it.
All what todays "artists" is either have a big pare of tits or a cute face.
well i must say im 14, and this is the only music i listen too, i find it rediculous the music technology makes today, it doesnt give you a happy warm smile like this, nope(: not at all.
The Chantels bring back a lot of emotions: puppy love, crushes, infatuations and heartaches. All happening to me and Betty when we were in 8th grade, and 50 years later when I hear those songs, I fall in love with Betty.
The same arrangement as the Crystals version, and the Three Degrees. Nice sound, but, still....I think the Three Degrees (at the time Fayette Pinkney, Helen Scott, and Janet Harmon) do the best job vocally.
If this isn't a love song, then I don't know what one would sound like. This is so good and sincere. Their voices ring ture - how sweet it was and is!!! Thanks for the great post.
What a great love sing; their voices are so soft and lovely. The music is wonderful. This is definitely evocative of something that would have been out in the late 50s or early 60s. Just perfect - a keeper. I love this. Thank you for this post.
Phil Spector called the Chantels the original girl group. One of the relatively few doo wop songs I like, and one of my older brother's older songs, about 1961 I think. Thanks for positng!
There was about 30 billion going through JFK every year, and we would try to steal every bit of it. It was just great. If the management ever got suspicious, Paulie would threaten them with a strike. Everything was perfect...
Great song, I first heard this on American Bandstand with Dick Clark. I couldn't remember the title when I heard it in Goodfellas, they only play a little of it. Thanks for posting this one, it is great, brings back great memories.
I remember back in the day when it was safe to sleep with your windows open...I would drift to sleep listening to all these romantic songs and the sound of crickets in the background.
I hear ya......nowadays, even if it's unsafe to sleep w/ your window open, take that risk and expose people to nice music (i.e., nice voices :))........it will, hopefully, chill people out just a little bit!
I think I was around 7 when this song came out and I always loved it. Now that I know the history and the group behind this great song its even more special. Love the Chantels and their harmony. Sadly Arlene Smith wasn't with them at the time but they sounded superb anyway.
What a fantastic song; I do not remember this at all. It sounds as though it probably is a song from the late 50s or early 60s - no matter - it is wonderful, I just love this! Thank you for a lovely post.
I'll never fathom how this FANTASTIC song never made it higher than No. 14 on the national Billboard charts (in the autumn of 1961). I'd have to rate this song, by Arlene Smith and the Chantels, as one of my top 14 all-time favorite songs, let alone No. 14 at any point in time.
Bob DeNiro IS the BEST! Will always associate this song with Goodfellas...thank you Marty for turning me on to some great tunes throughout the years...
Listening to this takes me back to high school and dances in the gym on Friday nights. Guys trying to out dress each other, trying to act so cool and fumbling all the way while the girls all acted coy. Oh to be 16 again.
(This is my Daughters account) Europe, Europe, Europe. Some of the most beatufil girls in the world. I imagine them singing this song to me when I hear it.
The Chantels achieved something almost unheard of in the early sixties for a female group. After losing their lead singer (Arlene Smith) and the record label initially responsible for their recording success, they went on to have the biggest hit of their career with this wonderful song. Thanks for posting.
