I had a great time. I drove 4 hours from [pittsburgh without a ticket by myself, but was able to get one by chance for $40 by fellow pittsburgers. It was a magical day. I just cant explain what all that happened.
the fact that the fans were far away didn't make a difference. i was sitting in the middle of the upper section and i could see everything just fine...and it was loud as hell. besides the fact that i was a Pens fan completely surrounded by Sabres fans, this was the best game i've ever been to atmosphere-wise. if you get an outdoor game near you, or even a 3 hour drive away, i highly suggest you do anything you can to go.
Canada may have the winter classic in 3 years... look for Toronto... I guess there is more money there... Pittsburgh won't be in next year's probably, unfortunately (me being and long term and strong Penguins fan...) I see next year being New York, Chicago may be a possibility in 2-3 years...
The NHL should host 2 outdoor games on the same day. There are plenty of CFL stadiums available in january in Canada. So why don't you have one in the US one in Canada. How about hosting it in Montreal at the Olympic Stadium?! :).
I attended the game and it was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere was unbelievable. The funny thing though is Buffalo fans got on Crosby so bad and abused the Pens fans but Crosby came through and won. I do hope the NHL decides to do it again. Go Pens!!

Detroit is definately not the ONLY hockey town, hockey is huge in Buffalo and western New York, and basically every town in Canada if you've been there. I also feel like Detroit would not be able to get this kind of a crowd at a game in a football stadium. It was the highest rated regular season NHL game in a decade. I think its quite clear the NHL should do this every year. Maybe a little tough on the day they chose due to the other sports options (ie football) but another winter day would be a good choice. The NHL can use all the exposure they can get.

Great game and great moment for the NHL. But why, I ask, did they decide to play this game on New Years day? The biggest day for college football with all the bowl games on. Last year they put the All star game on a Tuesday night, the same night as americas most watched tv show 'American Idol' and now this.
I just hope they get it right next time, not to take away from this great event or anything, but I just wish everyone was able to see it.
This was a great game! It was good for hockey to have it aired in front of such a large TV (and stadium) audience. I found it particularly interesting how the players had to deal with the cold and the accumulating snow on the ice - factors they normally do not have to contend with. But it was fair for BOTH teams. Great ending!
When they do the next one, Montreal probably isn't gonna be involved because they've already been in one (the Heritage Classic). I think they'll probably do the 26 other teams that haven't done one yet. But Buffalo @ Toronto or Toronto at Buffalo sometime in the next 13ish years would be awesome!!!

i play hockey outside all the time up here, seeing as how its winter 8 months out of the year, and we can maintain ice outside for the whole winter up here. even if its just pick up games or practice..this is how the game is meant to be played, its where it was created....OUTSIDE
I hope this is done more. Like instead of one game, there is maybe a winter classic week or month where all teams play a game outdoors (maybe even a tournament like set up). I would love to go to one of these games if they played in colorado.

I think each team should do this each year at least once. It slows down the game and makes things alot more interesting. I still think hockey belongs in a arena but this is a nice change of pace.
That's a terrible idea. The snow accumulates on the ice and it would be pointless for most teams to hold games like this. The Penguins and Sabres are two of the most popular teams in the League right now. They should do it once every other year with the most marketable or rival teams. I wouldn't actually mind if they never did this again. Nothing is ever going to match the excitement this game had.
Sidney Crosby put in some work for the first twenty seconds of the game and then for the last twenty seconds of the game, yet he is the hero. Buffalo outplayed Pittsburgh for 60 minutes and hit the hell out of them, yet nobody cares. Nice.

What a great idea this was! It was fun to watch (loved the retro unis, too) and a great game to boot. It reminded me of playing pond hockey when I was a kid. I hope they do it again next year.

I don't think it's possible to do this with every team every year just because the logistics are tough, but I agree it would be awesome. I'd love to see the Leafs take on the Habs at the Rogers Centre with the roof open. Or Red Wings and Avalanche at Michigan Stadium (capacity 115,000)

I hate Pittsburg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This game almost seems too perfect for tv 1 on1 for the whole game then into a shootout then the "star" sidney crosby gets the winning goal What the hell?! Sabres so outplayed they just couldn't score .

I watched this game it was very exiting and to watch the game go into overtime that was even better! Once a year is enough. Hopefully next year they have it in Chicago. Chicago vs Detroit!!!!

i think thats it's bad, the fans are so far away from the game. If they could just open the roof to an indoorrink it would be better, or build an outdoor rink but we know that will never happen

crosby wishes he was as amazing as ovechkin!! crosby what a joke that lipstick wearing girlie piece of crap. just look at his upper teeth what a douche. he thinks he's good. but i aint knockin on gonchar, the best offensive/defensemen in the league (pretty cool guy in person to) but that was a great game ended in a shootout what a great matchup.

Great game and great moment for the NHL. But why, I ask, did they decide to play this game on New Years day? The biggest day for college football with all the bowl games on. Last year they put the All star game on a Tuesday night, the same night as americas most watched tv show 'American Idol' and now this.
I just hope they get it right next time, not to take away from this great event or anything, but I just wish everyone was able to see it.

This was a great game! It was good for hockey to have it aired in front of such a large TV (and stadium) audience. I found it particularly interesting how the players had to deal with the cold and the accumulating snow on the ice - factors they normally do not have to contend with. But it was fair for BOTH teams. Great ending!

When they do the next one, Montreal probably isn't gonna be involved because they've already been in one (the Heritage Classic). I think they'll probably do the 26 other teams that haven't done one yet. But Buffalo @ Toronto or Toronto at Buffalo sometime in the next 13ish years would be awesome!!!

i play hockey outside all the time up here, seeing as how its winter 8 months out of the year, and we can maintain ice outside for the whole winter up here. even if its just pick up games or practice..this is how the game is meant to be played, its where it was created....OUTSIDE

I hope this is done more. Like instead of one game, there is maybe a winter classic week or month where all teams play a game outdoors (maybe even a tournament like set up). I would love to go to one of these games if they played in colorado.

I think each team should do this each year at least once. It slows down the game and makes things alot more interesting. I still think hockey belongs in a arena but this is a nice change of pace.

That's a terrible idea. The snow accumulates on the ice and it would be pointless for most teams to hold games like this. The Penguins and Sabres are two of the most popular teams in the League right now. They should do it once every other year with the most marketable or rival teams. I wouldn't actually mind if they never did this again. Nothing is ever going to match the excitement this game had.

Sidney Crosby put in some work for the first twenty seconds of the game and then for the last twenty seconds of the game, yet he is the hero. Buffalo outplayed Pittsburgh for 60 minutes and hit the hell out of them, yet nobody cares. Nice.
