I LIVED at Socal dragstrips (Lions, Irwindale, OCIR, Pomona & Fontana) from 1964 until I was drafted in 1969. Front-engine cars (and, in particular, fuel cars) were ALWAYS trouble waiting to happen. Clutch explosions were particularly catastrophic and took the lives of alot of drivers. I witnessed 4 fatal crashes (Joe Jackson in '66 @ Lions, Mike Sirokin in '67 @ OCIR, Pete Robinson in '71 @ Pomona and Harrell Amyx in '66 @ Lions). It's surprising to me that more drivers weren't killed.

@gravekeep89 You get your ass blown up. You sit over the axle, your nuts over the driveshaft, and your legs around the transmission. I believe Don Garlits got his foot cut in half in one of these when the transmission blew up.

videos never serve nitro burners any justice. these cars are so loud. at bonneville speed week i dropped my burger just because the driver reved his engine. it sounds like a cannon blast and you can hear them from 4+ miles away

@musclekid13 i agree, out at seattle over the summer during a test and tune night, a guy was drivin basically a funny car without the shell and the sound was ear shattering. made the little kids cry and adults jump in the stands when he revved it up. total flame throwing monster :)

@marshallvalvestate Anyone correct me if I'm wrong. From what I remember from working on my bosses injected alky car, Alcohol burns cooler than nitro or gas.

Alcohol cars take longer to stage on cold days so they can build more heat in the engine.

The advantage to nitro is it contains its own oxygen componant right in the fuel.

Thats why they moved them to rear. Well, that and more weight on the rear tires.
