Wow, that was wild. More exciting than anything the rock world has to offer in my opinion....Does anybody know what taking the top off a Rhodes does? Jan Hammer did it too. I've got a Rhodes, and I don't notice the difference. Maybe it depends on how loud you're playing, I dunno.

What in heaven's name in going on???!!!!!! It might as well be a jazz version of 20th Century classical music!
Where's the melody, where's the structure, where's the nostalgia, saddness and suffering????!!!!!!!!
Where's the music???!!!!!
Please don't be offended Miles Davis fans, but I've been told just what a legend he is, and all I see is intellectual wit that can Proxy-Connection: keep-alive
You're absolutely right. It is actually a jazz version of 20th Century classical music as Miles himself admitted. If you listen to the whole song from the beginning to the end you'll find that there is a melody and a clearly defined structure, unfortunately that part of the performance is not shown in this clip. Just look at Keith Jarrett and you'll see all possible human suffering you can think of. Hope this helps.
@SebastienLoong don't judge miles electric by this clip. forget the ballads and buy "black beauty." it's spontaneous but harmonious at the same time...
something very often attempted in jazz but VERY rarely acheived
some call him avant garde for me miles is cutting edge..defying the rules at that this time, he has pissed alot of jazz cats since he used the whah effects on his trumpet...hes like a rebel..he likes to evolve in the shortest time possible
@HammondB200 that's a more mature response than Pat Metheny gave in his interview. Whether you like his playing or not (I don't personally like it) Kenny G has to be doing something right other than marketing to get that many listeners.
Someone probably commented about this but Jack DeJohnette wasn't in Miles' band at this point (he formed his own band in late '71 I think). Don Alias and Mtume were on congas/percussion. Ndugu played drums.
Thanks for this footage. "beautyisararething" had more of the show but the videos were removed.
miles tone is fine but john coltrane never hooked his horn up to a pedal before. i have and its not easy to find the good intervals or do slick runs when u use it jackass
dude sorry to correct you but Adderlay is an alto saxophonist, Scofield is Guitarist & Ross is a vocalist, correct they all jazz cats but definitely NOT trumpet legends.
Don Alias is the 2nd percussionist. Anyway, does anyone know the origins of this clip because there is a small section of it on the Miles Electric DVD and it sounds superb...
Thanks for the post. Difficult to see the other players but the bass player is definitely Michael Henderson, Gary Bartz is on Alto Saxophone. Can't see the drummer. The Percussionist might be James 'Mtume' Forman. Hope that helps.
hard to believe nobody has said anything after 803 views! what a trip! sorry i canT help with info on the credits but we all know who Miles and KJ are. thank you for the super posts. ~eLi G.

Part of my favourite Miles period. F*cking cool, pardon the obscenity. I can't believe I just read Kenny G's name on the same page as Miles Davis.

Ndugu did play with Miles during this period and was fired for missing a gig. I think I read this in the 'Live/Evil' CD booklet.
eriktheviking2006 3 years ago
Actually, it IS Ndugu Chancellor on the drums. There's other clips of this same concert were you can see him. Jack was gone by this time.
