Dude, I suggest you watch some documentaries on the current situation in SA. 50 people a day, yes 50 A DAY are murdered. SA has one of the worst crime/murder rates in the world. Unemployment and poverty are increasing at staggering rates.
I'm not saying they won't do a great job, because they no doubt will host a very good world cup. But it all comes at a price - and that price is the continued poverty of it's own people. Honestly, I'd rather that first world countries host it.

Hosting the WC comes with a lot of benefits (improved infrastructure-road, rail, air, thousands of short and long term jobs, skills development, tourism, etc). All these have long term benefits to the ppl and the country. There is no one way to solve SA's social problems, hosting the WC is just one of the ways!!
Make it December 2010, and let's see if the benefits of the WC will have been sustained. We can either hold a positive attitude of giving other developing nations a chance to host major sporting events and benefit from the resulting improvement in their infrastructure ( a major requirement for any progress) or we can say "to hell with them and their poverty, crime and diseases".

Dude, I suggest you watch some documentaries on the current situation in SA. 50 people a day, yes 50 A DAY are murdered. SA has one of the worst crime/murder rates in the world. Unemployment and poverty are increasing at staggering rates.
I'm not saying they won't do a great job, because they no doubt will host a very good world cup. But it all comes at a price - and that price is the continued poverty of it's own people. Honestly, I'd rather that first world countries host it.

@DeluxeReissue : Countries far worse than SA have hosted the World Cup, most notably the military regime-run Argentina in 1978, the Mussolini-run Italy in 1934, or (according to football purists) "we don't give a fuck about soccer" USA in 1994. FIFA felt a need to grow the sport in Africa, and SA is truly the only place in that continent capable of hosting this tournament.

Hosting the WC comes with a lot of benefits (improved infrastructure-road, rail, air, thousands of short and long term jobs, skills development, tourism, etc). All these have long term benefits to the ppl and the country. There is no one way to solve SA's social problems, hosting the WC is just one of the ways!!

We can either hold a positive attitude of giving other developing nations a chance to host major sporting events and benefit from the resulting improvement in their infrastructure ( a major requirement for any progress) or we can say "to hell with them and their poverty, crime and diseases".

if south africans with their pessimistic or "realist" attitudes (whatever you pathetic people call it) cannot help but feel better after watching this, then their is no peace for you... in this country or another. You will never be happy unless you are unhappy. To the rest of us still committed to working for our future, i say this; it was never going to be easy, it was never going to be without sacrifice but our future is calling us but lets not forget about our past either!!! viva sa viva

It is because the past has become such an easy excuse, that this country has deteriorated as much as it has.
Incompetence, criminality and even stupidness have all been blamed on the past (apartheid)
Stop looking for lame excuses and start addressing the real problem in SA - the shockingly high violent crime rate!!!!!

All these negative comments are of ignorant people who have such sad lives they cannot do anything else but try inflict their NEGATIVE lives and beliefs onto others. Empyriumman I totally agree with you - the horrendous statistics DO speak for themselves! - even the manipulated statistics "produced" by the SA Police Service.
I was a policeman for 20 years and was a serving member when they started manipulating crime stats back in 2001 (just before our World Cup bid)
Maybe we should just start quoting the daily headlines to show the world what they are letting themselves in for...
