At 3:36 "At our gigs, the audience is the most important thing. If the audience is happy then you played a good gig. Doesn't matter how shit it sounded. Whoever might film it, criticize it, record it or whatever."
No lip synch, no pre recorded tracks, no spotless MTV image. A man and his music. From the heart.
I love how people hate on him yet he is in his 50's and still living. Alot of people die without ever drinking before than and he is still alive, so fuck off! He has done enough in his short life than most people do in a lifetime!
Shane is a fine alumnus of the private Westminster School, along with Nick Clegg, Helena Bonham Carter, Sir John Gielgud, A.A. Mile,Sir Peter Ustinov, and other lushes, bums and punks. Look what tuition fees of $40,000 a year can buy! Rock on, you old rebel.
@smikestack only reason shane was there is because of his song writing talents, he was kicked out within a few weeks for drug dealing, never graduated.
Rollins has been good friends with Nick Cave for a long time. As you no doubt know, Cave was a big time drug user, BIG TIME. Also, someone previously mentioned Ian doing the Pailhead project with Al Jourgenson.
Perhaps these interviews you speak of are from the Minor Threat and SOA era in the lives of Hank and Ian? They seem pretty chilled out these days.
I wonder why Henry didn't interview him? I love Henry and agree with him on most things but he and Ian MacKay are quite intolerant of people who choose to put their choice of chemicals in their body. It is Shane's life and if he chooses to be drunk all the time than let him and also respect his choice to do so. I'm sure Henry got annoyed with people giving him shit for not drinking and doing drugs so why turn around and give the same treatment to those who chose to do so.
@Flipper79able He also wrote some timeless music. So what if he choose to do so drunk. Drunk never worked for me cause I keep in jail, you can't record in a prison.
@scumgod13 Were you drunk when you wrote your message to me because you COMPLETELY missed the point of what I was saying? Please don't write back I can see that this conversation is a lost cause.
@Flipper79able I wouldn't read too far into this, mate. Rollins may have been too busy on the day. There are few other bands/artists who did interviews for the show without Hank asking the questions. Both himself and Ian are pretty tolerant of all walks of life, as far as I gather.
@xalstarx I am not necessarily talking about this interview....I'm talking in general terms about what I have witnessed through their own words in the media. You are right about both Henry and Ian being pretty tolerant about all walks of life except when it comes to drug users. You can listen to many interviews where they express their distain for drug use and drug users.
Get Shane when he's sober - He's a good man, and a great songster - but no mistaking that the drink is f..ing him up, as it does us all who are too fond of it.
I hate one thing about the Rollins Show: Rollins never talks to, interviews or goes any where near the musical guests. Don't even think he's in the same building.
Yea, but he is funny as hell to watch... Just trying to understand him can strain a person. I have to use the closed captioning on tv to decipher what he's saying. He's brilliant but unfortunately, it hurts him too much to stay sober. Sad. He can't be happy.
Easy ambush for that tiny but perfectly formed Rollins, who never had a note in his head. Where the fuck is he? The little shit, its his show. I remember that spastic in Copenhagen, writing his diary and lifting his dumbbells, and not wanting to know anything about where he was.
Shane is wiser than you will ever be. Whether you're some cunt who thinks he's got his life worked out just because he goes to some shitwhole University, who thinks he's granted intelligence just because he's got a few GCSEs, I will always take Shane's views over people like you. And people who aren't like you.
@arrghgarry He didn't waste his life. I accept that he's been reckless with his health and career, but he has achieved a lot more than most of us. He has had record deals, written songs, and had hit singles and albums. That's not a wasted life.
he was born in england to Irish parents, and then moved back and forth between england and ireland during his early, formative years. and then i believe that the bulk of the pogues' songwriting and recording was done in London... so that might be why his accent sounds different.
defend him all you want...but I wonder how good he would have been had he not killed his brain with drugs and drink....he basically mentally handicap at this point in his life...sad to see
Mentally he's still pretty spot on. He's just inarticulate as hell and really always has been - what with him being a compulsive alcoholic. A better question is if he'd be any good had he never taken a drink of alcohol in his life.
who 'drank too much' and whose show is this who never drank much at all and how many good albums did each make? I'd say the drunkard achieved more in the way of good music. People are obsessed with what runs in the blood of the artist rather than the art itself- that's a worse disease than any individual's addiction.
@myroncope Exactly. I mean, all of those things are a part of the person and and his or her art. They always factor into things, of course, but the art transcends it. What do we know about Shakespeare? Nothing. Doesn't stop the guy from having an incalculable influence on the English language. All of that hard living is part of what made Shane who he is, and that's what made his art what it is. Now, having said that, he's definitely not in the greatest of shape here and is hard to understand :P!
@myroncope Im alcoholic, too the point of I have seizures when I come off of it (usually in jai) plus I'm on the clinic to stay of heroin and other opiates. But I Try to write valid music.
Shane is an extremely intelligent man and one of the last living punks that stayed true to the cause, but you can't pretend that he never killed any brain cells with the amount he drinks. It is a shame but his, and The Pogues work will be remembered forever. He did what he intended to do which was inject Irish folk music into popular music, and he accomplished that, and I admire him for that reason.
Up until Obama (hopefully) the wrong men (and women) are normally in politics. Thank feck the right men are in music, cheers Shane. Check out my Jimmy Magee all you lovers of irish music.
Shane is the man! I've read the books about him written by his girlfriend, Victoria, and even though he's drunk most of the time, he's still surprisingly intelligent, insightful, and fucking cool. He's super talented and there will never be anyone else like him

He has an army of fans, too many to be bothered by a shitstain like yourself. Why are you watching this video in the first place? Why don't you watch something about an artist you like?
yeah james joyce had a daily schedule - he slept for 8 hours, he drank for 8 hours then he wrote for 8 hours.
