To me, this version is too big, not inward enough. Not sure I don't like Hugh Bean/Boult's or Iona Brown/Marriner's versions better even though I rarely find later recordings to be better than older. Pougnet plays well but it sounds a bit impersonal, etude-like. If only there was a recording of Marie Hall playing it. Vaughan Williams wrote it for her, and dedicated it to her. She gave the first public performance with Boult in 1921. Oh well. . .

This is wonderful playing. I'm embarrassed to admit, as a violinist, that I had never heard of Pougnet.
