In any of the cases described above, the result isn't good. SO a much better thing to do would be to look up the chemicals used in chemical hand warmers and use exothermic chemical reactions, or even better, buy hand warmers! The chemical ones are reusable anyway.
Rechargeable batteries are a whole different kettle of fish. Ni-MH batteries (most common rechargeable) are likely to heat up to dangerous temperatures and burn you, so it would be stupid to do that.
Lithium batteries, whether Lithium-Ion or Lithium Polymer are likely to (in order of descending likelihood): a) Rupture and spray hot electrolyte (liquid) everywhere. b) Explode due to heat and pressure. c) Catch fire. d)Explode due to fire.
1. Short circuiting a battery as demonstrated here will cause it to heat up.
This means that this 'hand warmer could be created with simply the last layer of foil.
2. With alkaline batteries (most common non-rechargeable), the battery will heat up but nothing overtly dangerous will happen. With lead-acid batteries, they will leak acid all over your hands (these are very old and are only used as car batteries).
Yet another simple but dangerous, AND inefficient way to make a heater...
This meathod will cause an electrical feedback into the battery, causing it to leak acid, or in some cases (moreso with rechargable batteries), Explode.
Don't be stupid, learn about how these things work, before doing something like this.
thats dangerouse as aluminum is conductive and you connect it to both sides of the battery yes it gets wark but it can burn too i have a few experience my self just try to keep it in a short time only or youl burn the battery
WOW u guys are so stupid you can just use a paper clip and take ecah end and put on the metal parts of the battery and it got so hot i couldnt even hold em
This is Extremely dangerous! by shorting out the battery for long periods of time you risk explosions, burns, and acid leakage from the battery. DO NOT DO THIS AT HOME!
even if this works, this was just a lousy video! ever hear of camera angles? pair of scissors? wire cutters? we watched u twist a wire back&forth for 20sec to cut it?! garbage! first & last viewing
How long would a battery like this last for? Going to make something more permanant that I can remove the battery and replace it eeasily! (I have loads of rechargable ones I use for my xbox controls)
@mangekyovision : same thing I thought......possibility of it blowing up. I once put a 9 volt battery in my pocket full of change....all the sudden i felt this surge of heat....and I mean real hot in my pocket. The battery was roaring hot.
it heats up because after you continue the current through a battery without the current being used, the metal and the battery get heated up. same concept as a light bulb.
As and EE graduate, I know what COPPER wire is. As none of my classes specifically talked about different types of wire I don't call myself an expert with wires. Besides the obvious he/ she in the video making a typo in the spelling of copper, I was curious if this was a type of wire I had never heard of just as you likely don't know what ACSR wire is and also likely never heard of words such as GED or diploma. As you're quick to point someone out to be an idiot just because they are curious.
Personally I could care less what ACSR wire is never had a need for it since now and may never in the future..I am sure you know what GED is..since that is probably the highest level of education you have received. Take care clown..
Point is that you are quick to criticize someones curiosity and call them an idiot. I would hate to see you around a young child, or even worse be a parent.
xD thats a waist of a battery. a hand warmer should be more efficient :3 like if you connect foil around your hand, put it in a glove, add a resister, and connect a wire to the resistor and the foil. this way you can start it up fast, then turn down the current of energy so you dont waist electricity and burn yourself :3 thanks for making me think of this though. if yours lasts 1-2 hours then mine should last 5-6 :P
hehe okay, its also a very old video, hmm you should make a video about it and set it up as a video response to mine, it would also secure you a bit more viewers ;) or if you dont know how to make the video ( witch you really should ;P) then you could send me the tapings and i would edit it for you :) GL ;)
@hoodstarx1 i found that the battery heats up more than the aluminum foil because it shorting the circuit out. It's actually smart the way this person does it because it uses conduction, using both the heat of the battery and the heat of the power going across the metal. Gloves are also a lot more tricky than i thought they were, only working when your out moving your body.
@xXxGenasai i see your point but heres what i did i took about 3 or 4ft of cat5 wire and evenly wrapped it around a 1inch wide 6inch long piece of flat wood and connected a battery to it and the wire heated up is there any modifications you would recommend for my heater? like to improve it? like a bigger battery?
@hoodstarx1 ok ok. what you'll want to do is use something like AA bateries. you'll have 6 for each hand and youll connect two bateries positive to positive and negative to negative. do that to the other pairs and then connect the double positive wires to the negatives of the pairs but leaving two wire ends unatached. this snake of 3 pairs of batteries will give power for a long time, but only the power of 3 batteries, and wont over heat. I would use magnetic coil wire though, not cat5
@hoodstarx1 you get magnetic coil wire at radio shack. and im not really sure about how many batteries you use, just the fact that if they're all in series, they will loose energy from short circuited heat.
This would be a great trick IF it worked, which it does NOT! Both steel wire and copper wire were used along with several brand new Energizer Max AA batteries...
it does works, you must have been doing something wrong:
take battery, wrap steel wire around ( i think others works too i use to make it with steel ) wrap around foil press it together so its tight, and wait some minnutes.
remeber it has to be a new battery, if it doesnt work i might not be waiting long enough, try waiting about 3 - 5 minnutes, if it doesnt work ´now i dont know what wrong. :)
question: Could I make wires from unfolding a paperclip instead of buying wires?
