Cold tips- Emergen-C, colloidal silver, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, elderberry extract, neti pot and Borion's ColdCalm. Oh and peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil in a defuser.
@paris31247 um, take her out of daycare! Find another family and trade care. Really their is no pill or practice that will keep your sweet baby from getting sick when you plop em in a cesspool.
Chamomile tea is anti-viral as is Lemon Balm. I mix either of those with a simmered infusion of tender Japanese Honey Suckle stems and leaves straight from the backyard . :-)
btw, I just love your videos. I recently bought a whole bunch of bumgenius diapers after watching your videos. Unfortunately, my son is getting really bad diaper rashes because of it. I was able to use it only one day and he got a bad rash. I bought so many. I feel so bad now. Any suggestions?
@gayathrig81 what detergent are you using? anything with a "enzyme action" will eat away at the urine even on your son's skin when he wets his diapers. so, use something natural and rinse twice. good luck!
late to the party, but since I had asthma at a young age and my parents did not trust any standing water in my room, we would hang out (outside of the shower of course) in our "steam room", well the bathroom filled with steam from the hot shower. We'd play on the mirror making funny face with the steam (this would take about an hour) and then bed.
If my babe is having trouble breathing through the nose, I will encourage them to nurse so they might be able to suck some of the mucus down, since they can't blow it out yet.
we use our juicer and make a juice using apples, carrots, celery, ginger, garlic and lemon. Its yummy and kicks my colds ass especially if accompanied by a hot Epsom salts bath!
Elderberry syrup and vitamin C is our go to remedies. My daughter had a cold just a few days ago. We gave her those two and after 3 days, she seems totally fine.
Tricks we use to avoid the common cold: Vitamin D, probiotics and hand washing that borders on OCD -when kids walk in the door from school the first thing they do is wash their hands. Fighting it: gargling warm/slightly salty water (for adults, I swear by gargling cayenne pepper in warm water - a few grains work wonders), spoonful of raw honey, chicken noodle soup, lots of rest and Ricola cough drops.
I start taking a lot of vitamin c and zinc at the first symptoms, as well as using my neti pot to help with nasal congestion. Only use purified water though, as tap water can be shown to worsen symptoms!
My trick is my cold busting tea recipe. It has vit. C and several immune boosting herbs in it. If I start to feel a sore throat or couch coming on I drink a couple cups that day and it seems to stop the cold in its tracks.
I really recommend using essential oils and aromatherapy to treat a cold. Eucalyptus oil has excellent decongestant properties, making it ideal for the treatment of flu, coughs and colds.
Peppermint is also a wonderful oil to use as it is nearly one third menthol which makes it a great oil for clearing head colds. Lavender essential oil is the oil to choose if your cold is preventing a good night's sleep. Used just before bedtime in a warm bath, the Lavender will relax you ready for bed.
Eating healthy must have something to do with it. I agree with lots of rest, too. For some reason (sheer luck?) our daughter has not had more than mild sniffles her whole 22 months of life!
Awesome ideas for the cold, thank you all for sharing! I have only one suggestion: the Nose Frida. It works much better than the bulb syringe for older thrashier babies.
My babe got her first cold the day she turned 4 months. I kept her in, nursed her more, encouraged rest, did the saline spray in her nose, sucked out her boogies, and we even got her a cute little froggy cold mist humidifier. She was right as rain again in about a week!
When DD was only two weeks old, she got a cold. I heard the weirdest trick to clear her congestion, but it TOTALLY works: slice an onion, and simply place it near baby. I had a plate of sliced onions right next to her all day and all night (maybe a foot or so away), and boom--cleared her right up. The house smelled like Burger King :) She hasn't been sick since--go BFing!!!
My favorite natural cold remedy/immune booster is the "magic sock treatment". After warming up your baby/adults feet with friction or a warm foot bath apply cold damp cotton socks to feet (wring them out well) then put on a pair of thick wool socks over the damp socks and go night night... Congestion disappears and your baby wakes up with fewer symptoms !!! Completely drug free and super effective. Ps your channel rocks!!! Nursing moms unite!!
I also use Zinc orally when I feel a cold coming on. In addition, I try to avoid antibacterial hand soaps throughout the year unless dealing with raw meat or something. I get maybe 1 cold a year and I have never had the flu or strep. I think my good immune system is because I let it do its thing... that is what it is there for.
Glad 2 of my beginning cold super fighters are mentioned. When I feel one coming on... vitaminC, echinacea and zinc... nothing more and nothing less. Thanks for the awesome show!
We use vicks rub on the feet, which really seems to help. Getting plenty of fluids for my little ones means juice- that's the only way to get them to drink more. Apple and orange are our favorites. When they are old enough, herbal tea also helps.
My son is 9 months old and on his 6th cold already. I can't believe how much he gets sick. I do the humidifier and saline/ nose suction. Not sure how else to help this little baby. Now he is coughing again and waking from it at night. My poor boy. I thought nursing was supposed to help. And yes I know its a cold and not allergies because my husband or I have gotten sick as well with EVERY one of these. I never used to get this sick till having a baby.
Oh man! Carter just had his first cold last week! You can also use Eucalyptus essential oil in a carrier oil to help like Vicks vapor rub would. For infants you put it on the bottom of their feet, & put socks on so they can't rub it into their eyes accidentally.
I have found using a couple of drops of the essential oil of myrtle (most recommended), eucalyptus, or peppermint on your child's collar or somewhere on the clothing helps with congestion! A must have at bedtime!
Lemon is a huge helper. I squirt just a little of lemon juice straight from the lemon into my water when sick and drink up. It soothes and keeps me hydrated since I enjoy the taste.
Ginger tea! ALWAYS helps. 1cm³ of ginger per cup of water. Bring to the boil and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. I think it tastes delicious. My sister doesn't so she puts honey in it.
A few years ago it would have been hot tea with lime and honey before bed. These days Emergen-C works great. I take 3-4 doses a day a see an improvement in a couple of days.
I make a tea that has never failed me, but it's a little on the spicy side for kids. Juice from several lemons, minced garlic and ginger with a little cayenne: boil in hot water for a short time. Honey to taste.
We use a solution of tea tree oil and water to disinfect hands on the go and wash as often as possible. When we do get sick, rest and the humidifier are our go-to. :)
as soon as i feel that achy skin, worn down feeling, I pop a Zinc and an extra Vitamin C with my daily multivitamin. I drink water like it's going out of style, and I make sure to stay calm. I have a theory that most everything can be cured by eliminating stress. Reaching a little high, I know, but the Zinc & C definitely help! Also, I am for sure trying FamDLove's "elixir". The benefits of garlic on the body are amazing!
my mom introduced me to her "elixir"...16 cloves garlic, 1 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 cup honey. Puree ingredients in a blender for 1 minute, pour into a glass jar w/tight fitting lid and refrigerate for 5 days, shake each day. When fighting a cold we put 2 tablespoons in juice, also can be gargled if fighting a sore throat. Garlic kills bacteria and viruses...taste takes some getting used to, but it does work!
- Thyme tea with honey: This is actually a very effective cough remedy. You can even get some thyme-based cough medicine in drugstores, but tea is more natural. The honey is soothing for the throat but also necessary for the taste because unsweetened thyme tea tastes quite bitter. You can use either fresh or dried thyme.
- Hot water with lemon and honey. This tastes quite nice and has a lot of vitamin C - the water shouldn't be too hot or the vitamins will get lost.
- Hot milk with honey and garlic. It doesn't taste very nice, but it's very effective for a head cold. Use freshly crushed garlic. Gulp it all down and have a nap! Doesn't really help with a sore throat though.
- Carrot cough drops: Hollow out a large carrot with a knife, but not all the way through. cut off the tip and poke a hole from the cut-off tip to the hollowed-out bit with a toothpick. Fill with sugar and wait for the carrot-syrup to drip through (takes about half an hour).
Will these tips help with pneumonia? My doctor told me 2 weeks ago I have it, and gave me antibiotics but I finished them almost a week ago and there is no difference. It is really bad because I am pregnant, and not getting enough oxygen in my blood and I dont see that being very good for the baby :(
@mommyof22010 You should eat more raw garlic, drink ginger lemon tea with honey, eliminate sugar and white flour from your diet. I would stay away from antibiotics as much as possible, as it destroys the good bacteria in your gut, which is 80% of your immune system. Make sure you take some probiotics to replenish your system.
Silver hydrosol is a natural form of an antibiotic, I use sovereign silver. Ideally, I would put that in a nebulizer so it is delivered directly to the lungs.
@mommyof22010 I had a similar problem with not enough oxygen in my blood when I was pregnant and my midwife had me drink chloraphill. You can buy it at any natural food store and it comes in a mint flavor which I found added a nice flavor to my tea. I hope this helps.
Cold socks you put them on with one pair of cold socks and then on pair of warm regurlar socks it helps and to take HOT steamy baths to just make you feeo better dosent take the cold away but it helps.
@Snowhorses123 My naturopath just told me about this, its called "Wet Sock Treatment." Good for anything above the chest... migraines, colds whatever. Take a hot warm bath, dry off, put cold wet cotton socks then dry wool over and wear to bed. Not good if on antibiotics or tylenol or anything. It pulls the congestion down through the body she said, so the body can get rid of it better.
My darling baby Ruby is just shy of 7 months and came down with her first cold a few days ago. I've been using the saline drops and bulb syringe with her and regularly dabbing her tiny nose with coconut oil! We also have the humidifier going in the bedroom with us overnight. I take a good dose of vitamin D regularly to strengthen my immune system, and I haven't been sick yet this season.
I add Vitamin C powder to diluted juice for the kids and a spoonful of homemade Elderberry/ Echinacea Syrup right into their mouths. Mmmm! (I use Crunchy Bettys recipe on her website)
the cure that has never failed me since childhood is homemade chicken stock/broth with grated fresh ginger [and some times rice for a bit of substance]...works on colds but is also amazing for nausea [that's why we call it Belly Soup]...super simple, but does the trick.
We use a garlic tincture with echinacea in hot tea. At the first sign of a cold we start on garlic, honey, and lemon tea. Works great for us! Also, we get adjusted the moment we are feeling off, and eat lots and lots of garlic!
I boile some hot water and add it to some lemon wedges, and sweeten it sometimes with honey or blue agava syrup or nothing at all, some times I'll add some ginger root or boil the root and I add cayenne pepper to help congestion. For some reason it seems like lemon teas help you feel better faster.
When i have the common cold, I do all of these things... 1) get a warm blanket and snuggle in a bed or on a couch!!! 2) drink lots of water 3) if your throat hurts drink hot tea or eat soup!!! 4) sleep sleep sleep :) hopes this helps!!! :)
I am currently fighting a cold and your video came at a perfect time. It was extremely informative. I didn't know that over the counter cold medicines didn't work and had long term affects?! Wow, that's really interesting! Thanks again for making this video. It helped inform me about different remedies for colds especially for children (I nanny for 2 kids and the oldest gets colds a lot). Thanks!
love the show and usually agree w/everything shared. i so disagree a little, like a smidgen on the public breastfeeding. i have 2 boys; 7 & 4 yrs of age & i breastfed both. now a days i could imagine they would both gockingly stare at a breastfeeding woman. they already stare t allow women to breastfeed in public w/out showing their bits, i mean tits.
My son has luckily not had the cold yet, but i like to turn the shower on all hot and close the bathroom door, it gets really damp, and i just sit in there and take deep breaths for apx 5min.
These tips are so helpful! Growing up, we were always given over the counter cold meds and I didnt know there were better ways! I'll definitely be trying your tips!
OH MY GOODNESS! What a funny thing to win! Thank you again! You guys rock my world!!
We started using elderberry syrup (and I plan to make my own) and it worked like a charm! Loved it. It totally got rid of my and Fia's colds!! It was awesome!
Water, tea, OJ or Bolthouse Farm C-Boost (Stuff is awesome) . I also make a tea with local honey and a little garlic for the toddler and for me just local honey with some chopped up garlic on the same spoon sounds gross but works. I also LOVE the Earth Mama Angel Baby bath blossoms! But we are hardly ever sick. Maybe a couple times a year if that...
I want to go as natural as i can with my 10 mo but i cant afford any organic soap, shampoo or lotion. So i stick w johnsons.same with food, i cant afford it and idk how to prepare it so i dnt have to make it everyday.tips pls
Great video! We drink and sometimes for extreme stuffiness/congestion "breathe in" peppermint tea while we sip it! It clears your nasal passages Naturally!
Colds are a rarity in our house, my youngest has never had one(10 mo) and my oldest has had 2 (3 1/2 years) My DH and I have had maybe 2 each in the last 4-5 years. When we do get one we drink plenty of fluids, kick on the humidifier and let the cold run its course.. :)
I don't have a kid yet but i take care of my sister. :) Usually I give her a gentle massage and give her lots of water and tell her to take a nap. In no time at all, she's up and hyper again :)
I myself am not a "real" mother, I have my cat Kerly.. but Im his mommy and he's my baby.. :) BUT I myself cannot sleep during the day, so laying on the couch and watching happy movies or tv shows, and a calm and quite house really help. My mom gave me chicken broth and chicken noodle soup, warm washcloths can be placed on the childs nose and mouth gently and I found that helped me when i had Bronchitis it helped sooth my throat and my nostrils. sinus infections as well, and tea helps too :D
Great tips! I never get sick, I actually can't even remember the last time I had a cold, but I just had a baby girl - she's 2 weeks old - and I hope to keep her cold-free also or learn some prevention tips.
We're fighting the cold with lots of rest and drinking lots of water. We haven't taken any meds for colds and flus in ages! Colds only last a few days and flu lasts about 10 days, so we just ride it out. :-)
steaming and cleaning my nose out with warm salt water - being 37 weeks pregnant there wasn't much else i could do to kick this last cold i picked up. it worked i can breath and taste my food again! just in time for the arrival!
my tip is actually a prevention tip that has kept me cold free for 3 yrs and counting during chgo winters... as soon as i feel the signs of a cold starting i immediately put peroxide in both ears, gargle w/warm salt water and take an emergenC... i add a real orange or lemon/lime to get real vit C... you can also vits D & zinc...
Great channel! I just found you and am loving your show! My tips for colds... Probiotics & Vitamin C. If anyone gets a fever we put garlic on the soles of their feet to draw out the fever - works like a charm! Our probiotic is a pearl form so if there is a lot of congestion one pearl under the tongue clears that up and Alfalfa works awesome too for congestion! No OTC anything in this house! Keep up the great work!
Great tips! We like to gargle with warm salt water when a sore throat is coming on. We also use all natural essential orange wipes to santize our hands on the go.
elderberry syrup, an immunity supplement with echinacea, orange juice, hot broth soups, hot baths with eucalyptus bubbles, lots of rest and water... and some green tea with honey and lemon in the mornings to help with that scratchy throat! we use a saline spray if the nose is super stuffy and if my daughter is feeling really run down or the cold could be something else such as a flu i give her childrens oscillococcinum. i used to give her probugs kefir but my store doesn't carry it anymore. :(
My tip? Eat well and exercise so ya don't get sick :) However to help sleep with a stuffy nose try putting a slice of onion in your bedroom, not to close though.
orange juice with a table spoon of honey in the mornings or with lemon juice too, and also boiling some vick in water and then do some inhalations covering your head with a towel, that help me when i went to visit Colombia last Christmas and i got the flu.. since I'm a breastfeeding mama i had to go all natural.. plus is the best for your body
We have two healthy unvaccinated children who have never had a cold - But when the weather changes my 2 year old gets sniffy with a dry cough for a day or two from the pollen (just like her mama). I wrap some crushed raw garlic into a tortilla and give it to her (she loves it), she also drinks warm water with local honey and lemon. Knocks it out in a couple days!
i totally agree w/peroxide... i just left that in my tips for cold prevention with a few others... peroxide is so great i even carry it in my purse in a small amber bottle with a dropper!
I just got over a cold and I use doTERRO essential oils to kick it in the butt. Their oregano and On Guard along with Lemon and Lime work great for me every time!
our best treatment for the common cold is BABYWEARING. my 27 month old little dude is quite the cuddle-er and when he's not feeling well, he needs it even more. kid-wearing has saved my sanity during every single illness. hip carry with a ring sling for the win!
I clean my house like crazy and make sure everything is disinfected! (I've started using vinegar and it works wonders!) and I drink lots of lemon water and use a neti pot! Neti pots are a god sent. Seriously. They seem disgusting and weird at first but once you get used to it they are heavenly for clearing out the sinuses!
Tons of disinfecting! The best thing to use are lemons or lemon juice! Lemons have a ph level of 2.3, approximately 6 times more acidic than vinegar! Plus it's safe and it smells great!!! And you can't forget to WASH WASH WASH those hands!!
One word, "VINEGAR" It is my cure all remedy, For years I have been taking applecider viegar. I take 3 tablespoons or fill up a shot glass and pound it 3 times a day. within 3 to 4 days whateve I had is gone, once I feel a soar throat sneaking up on me i run to the cubbard and start drinking it. seriously 3 days at the most and its gone!- I cant live without it :-D
love it! I take loads of vit c I drink 100 ml of sebuckthorn juice mixed with cranberry juice everyday and I get about 500 mg from that. when I have a sore throat I use my juicer and juice ginger its def very spicy but works great! also I use a potent blend of pure essential oils the product is called 'immune illume hot berry" it has essential oils of clove, orange, tumeric just loads, u take a drop with honey it always works like a charm :D I am reading a book about essential oils as medicine.
I wish I was BF'ing still, I'd do the Nurse-in. Well whenever I had a cold as a child my mom would put Vapor Rub on my feet and cover them with socks. It keeps your feet warm when you catch a cold. And my daughter loves spicy food. Whenever she's stuffed up she eats some jalapeños. Lol it works.
I'm currently trying to conceive but my grandma always says to sweat out a cold. she would put me under a bunch of blankets and a heating blanket and I honestly felt better within the next two days :)
I rub my daughter's feet with Vicks Vaporub!

Kathilisi 4 weeks ago

It is really bad because I am pregnant, and not getting enough oxygen in my blood and I dont see that being very good for the baby :(
mommyof22010 1 month ago
@mommyof22010 You should eat more raw garlic, drink ginger lemon tea with honey, eliminate sugar and white flour from your diet. I would stay away from antibiotics as much as possible, as it destroys the good bacteria in your gut, which is 80% of your immune system. Make sure you take some probiotics to replenish your system.
Silver hydrosol is a natural form of an antibiotic, I use sovereign silver. Ideally, I would put that in a nebulizer so it is delivered directly to the lungs.
janelletw 4 weeks ago
@mommyof22010 I had a similar problem with not enough oxygen in my blood when I was pregnant and my midwife had me drink chloraphill. You can buy it at any natural food store and it comes in a mint flavor which I found added a nice flavor to my tea. I hope this helps.

QOTW: to get rid of those nasty colds
Cold socks you put them on with one pair of cold socks and then on pair of warm regurlar socks it helps and to take HOT steamy baths to just make you feeo better dosent take the cold away but it helps.
Snowhorses123 1 month ago

Wow, that's really interesting! Thanks again for making this video.
