Here's what I got from the story.

The Revolution that held so much hope was a failure. The Chinese government placed greed and corruption above the needs of citizens by allowing foreign multi-nationals to set up the worlds largest slave labour market. These were to foundations of China's manufacturing base, not the sacrifices of mothers and grandmothers. Working ridiculously long hours and living in absurd conditions is not something to aspire to.

I have met Xinran more than once and I can honestly say she is the most incredible lady, someone who puts people instantly and definitely at ease with no apparent effort whatsoever.

She speaks slowly because she isn't confident about her English. Big deal. Get over it. The important thing is the amazing work she does. This book is wonderful, shocking and heartbreaking.

However, I have also found most Chinese in the US to be not very friendly---the least amiable of all foreigners. Perhaps this is cultural, or maybe caused by language differences. I live among dozens of Chinese international students--Great students, but not sociable--They don't mix with our other students.

Menial means to lack interest or dignity. So you are saying that laboring at jobs that are uninteresting and undignified are discriminated against? I think rightfully so. They are usually costly to health both mental and physical, create a servile mentality,degrade self esteem, are always pushing the body and mind to endure more stress in the name efficiency and go hand in hand with longer hours, crazy shifts and barely livable wages.
