I noticed the part about the cop shot in the face. Was he the same cop who eventually was interviewed on the 6 PM News 4 New York on the Sunday before Mem-Day '89?
Given that this aired within the run of the miniseries "The Thorn Birds," this newscast teaser appears to be somewhere between March 28 and 30, 1983, would I be correct in that assumption?
I think he was making fun of the way announcer Wally Parker phrased and intoned the title. For all I know, Parker may've subbed for Gil Hodges that very night.
I don't know if it was him - the only situation as you describe that I know of (the on-camera "finger") was with Mara Wolynski (whatever became of her?), as Rose Ann Scamardella was introducing her report on Black History Month, on a 5 P.M. newscast in early 1983. Which in turn led to perhaps Roger Grimsby's most famous quip . . .
And I think another part of it was to keep himself from going (to quote a British slang) "barmy," given what's been noted about his unhappiness during his WABC run.
What's the problem with his smile? Newscasters as a whole take themselves too seriously anyway.
Also, it sounds like he's mimicking the station's long-time voice-over announcer who always called the newscasts "EYYYYYEEEEEwitness News." Just a guess, but I bet the smile resulted from the take on Ernie Anderson's voice-over.
Actually, at this point (1983), two in-house announcers handled the intros: Gil Hodges and (on occasion) Wally Parker. Parker in particular, from one of the clips elsewhere here, inflected the "EWN" title similar to the way Snyder was doing it here. It wasn't until about 1987 that Anderson began V/O'ing the opening.
There's probably one person who may agree about Mr. Snyder's WABC stint being a bust: Tom Snyder, himself. I remember reading an interview where he himself considered his run there the low point of his career.
So Snyder was in New York for a second, eh? I think he parlayed that into that hour-long talk show he had here in L.A. (local show on KABC, not the Tomorrow Show)
Tom Snyder was a total bust for eyewitness news and maybe the end of the clip is the reason why, whats he smiling at? He was unprofessional. The only thing that was cool was they had great guests on the short lived newscast at 4:30.
oh god!! dont tell me u didnt know that. thats where she started her career. she was there from 1983 to either 1991 or 1992.

Tom was a very heavy smoker, but boy it never seemed to affect his wonderful speaking voice. I miss him and his talent.

Kaity Tong in a thong, wouldn't that be neat.
Kaity Tong in a thong, I would look and say "sweet"
Kaity Tong in a thong, I could stare for weeks!
Kaity Tong in a thong, would complement those dandy cheeks!

I presume this telecast was from April 16, 1983? (Given the reference to a verdict in the Groucho Marx estate trial.)

If you look Tom also does a raise of his eyebrow when he says Eyewitness News. I think that was part of the reason for the smile.
