Rare chords, weird sounds, spooky ideas and genius drums all combined to create a masterpiece... That's what Opeth do... and that's why we love'em. \m/
Opeth has so much more to offer than typical metal bands. Those bands make generic music that has been done a million times. Big distortion + blast beats + growls. So boring and it means nothing! Opeth make ambitious music without barriers. The new direction they're taking with Heritage is so fresh! Love it when bands always want to make more than the previous record and try different things. I'm thinking about bands like Porcupine Tree, Tool, Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Sigur Ros, etc.
@metalpi3x Yeah, It's funny how metal is the closest thing to classical masterpieces.I always used to say that lol. If all the classical composers were alive today they would listen to metal.
@ibsayem1337 If all the classical composers were alive they'd listen to the few centuries worth of classical music they weren't alive to hear. Metal really isn't that great. It's pretty close to pop if you really think in terms of song structure. The guitar as an instrument is actually very close in terms of development to how the violin was at the beginning of the 17th century. I suggest you read into it.
@R34n1mated The structure of this song is A B C A B D C A B.
A is verse, B is chorus, C is solo, D is bridge. Pretty much any song by any metal band is a spin on the verse chorus verse chorus thing in one form or another. They aren't set up like classical arrangements at all. Not even close.
@bill14231393 a spin? I wonder how distorted it must be to not be considered a "spin" and before reaching a progressive feel. I ask you, is this also a spin on pop structure? Look up Only Ash Remains by Necrophagist, or even perhaps another song from opeth, Dirge for November
@R34n1mated I think you've missed my point. Someone commented that classical composers would listen to metal. I think that's incorrect. There's literally centuries of classical music that most classical composers didn't get to hear because they weren't alive. Metal is BY FAR closer to pop music than it is to classical music. Don't limit your perception of pop music to what you hear on the radio nowadays. Think everything that has been played on the radio for the past 60 years.
@bill14231393 it's an interesting opinion.... but surely, you know that the metal genre has as many branches as it has influences.... and the melodicity and complexity of certain metal varieties (such as progressive, symphonic, etc.) can only be compared to those of classical pieces... while it is true that some subgenres have certain pop elements, I think that due to elements such as the instrumentals, the vocal types and the lyrical style, they can be considered far from pop
@LordSixty I disagree completely. I listen to all different types of music and while I do like some metal I don't get nearly as much out of it as I get from other genres. Opeth has some interesting lyrics but most of them are pretty obscure or nonsensical. I don't think that's bad, I just don't see how they contribute to freethinking and rebellion.
@bill14231393 I don't specifically refer to Opeth. Metal takes the characteristics of other genres and make itself sound different. It has more room to experiment. Metal has the widest range of sound. Metal also isn't bogged down by a demand to fit pop criteria, so it has a lot more freedom in that regard. Metalheads in an overwhelming majority are nerds at heart, and I find the company of those person that can appreciate a less generic sound and more intellectual lyrics more enjoyable.
@LordSixty i think the oppoisite - metal is probably the least versatile of genres, with not a lot of room to experiment - it doesn't change for anybody, same slow chuggy stuff. not to say that you can't do things with it (and wow you can get some good shit with it!) but i agree with you in that it can have a lot of substance, where some music can be just really simple, metal whacks on tonnes of layers of the goods and you get this really thick sound, it's great.
@ELEPHANTspoon Hey, I was not really into the conversation but I read through your comment and I find this a worthy discussion. Metal is actually quite versatile, not by doing experiments within it but by fusing with other genres and developing it into another layers in music itself (hence Opeth!). Many have attempted to develop different "metal" sonorities like Apocalyptica (distorted cellos) or Van Canto (operatic a capella), but the real thing comes in bands like Opeth or Tool.
@PaoloBaixista but, i just think that's looking into the detail of the metal too much;overall it can sound repetitive/uninteresting the first time you hear it and when can it be sweet and melodic? i suppose i mean is it's very versatile, but it stays within certain boundaries. does that make sense? 0.o it probably doesn't sorry...
but i so agree with you in that it can go many places and you can fuse it with pretty much everything out there except maybe indie rock lol. hate indie.
@ELEPHANTspoon Yes, that does make sense, I get your point :)
However, when talking about such bands I prefer to think about metal as if it were and element, not a genre. An element that can be incorporated to anything really for different sonorities, even though sometimes it doesn't come out very well. For example, Limp Bizkit fused metal with rap and it sucked. Rage Against the Machine did the same but went through other ways and made it sound awesome, and its less metal than LB
I'm tired of hearing about Justin Bieber in an actual musician's video. Let's all just shush and listen to the complete Damnation album, it's one of the world's treasures.

You regret none of it, even if you have before.
he sounds waay better live. oh wait, hes the shit, and it sounds the exact same. god i love opeth. totally worth driving the 500+ miles to go see them
opeth is a great band. but this album right here for some reason saved my life. well this along with alien from devin townsend strapping young lad when i needed a anger fix. god damn what the hell would are crazy asses do without good metal lol.
That'd be awesome if they did more song with clean vocals like this. The guitar tone actually reminds me of Buckethead's tone on his clean songs like this, in fact this instrumental sounds like something Buckethead would make. I'm not making a comparison so don't get your panties in a bunch either. Another album like this from them would be nice. His voice is orgasmic on this album.
@BigTymerPimp Funny that you say that, seeing as i was just listening to one of Buckethead's clean, beautiful songs from a Real Diamond in the Rough and it was somewhat reminiscent of this. So here i am. Love this song and love Buckethead too
@Dagnus284 Buckethead almost never has a bad tone let alone a bad song. The guy is a guitar master. He also is like a musical superhero when you think about the character he plays and the story that goes with it. He is definetly one of the most understandable, yet genius artists of our time. It's sad that alot of people don't get him, because they think he is some weird shredder in a Halloween costume. Same thing when people hear Opeth they only take things at face value.
@ElJucifer That's exactly the album that comes to mind. His tone was perfect on that album and almost every guitar I hear with this tone reminds me of that album. That is definetly on my must have albums list for anyone.
@ElJucifer People are too quick to judge artists like him. He is actually a very interesting guy that loves his fans and all music. Who else could play lightning speed metal solo perfectly, then start doing the robot to techno music? After that play some of the most awe inspiring clean melodies to come about in the last couple of decades?
@ElJucifer Hey thanks for making your comment regarding Buckethead. I was one of those people that would have written his music off as "noisy shred crap", but I'm listening to the Electric Tears album right now, and damn I was wrong. SO wrong. I'm loving it!! Can't believe I've been missing out for so long.
@thatPinkFlamingo Really glad to hear. That album really changed my opinion of him and my guitar playing. I would definitley look into "Colma" aswell. More of that kina chilled, ambient stuff.
Some people don't get Opeth's music. This one guy even said their lyrics are cliche. I swear of all the metal bands to call cliche he picks the one band that is anything but. Yeah dude! Like all the other metal bands, who have lyrics about death and satan aren't. Don't get me wrong I listen to them too but COME ON!! Fuck all you close minded metal snobs out there. There popularity comes from talent, not from being sellouts. OPETH FOREVER!!!
@hitachi66 I listen too all that stuff too. I also think metal is the ultimate form of sticking it to the man. But to call a band out for being popular yet original. Well let me put it this way, in my opinion there are 2 kinds of metal heads. Ones that get it and ones that don't. The ones that don't usually don't last. I've been true to metal since i was 10. So if you think your gonna school me in metal your sadly mistaken. F.O.A.D.P. FUCK OFF AND DIE POSERS!!!
@hitachi66 Metal comes from classical. What metal fans love the most is how the song sounds... melody.... instruments... the emotions that comes with the songs.
I was heavily in the depths of drug addiction when I first heard Opeth, the worst period of my life....yet even now several years later, this is still one of the most unbelievably and agonizingly beautiful songs I've ever heard
There are no more Opeth albums like Damnation with only soft music, but there are some songs you should check out. Benighted and To Bid You Farewell are two of them.
@papan1990 definitely check out "patterns in the ivy 2" and "still day beneath the sun". theyre bonus tracks off of blackwater park. theyre so relaxing :)
@papan1990 This is the only album with only soft songs, but there are many others scattered between the other albums. The ones I like the most are patterns in the ivy one and two, Credence , Benighted... and many more.
@papan1990 if you sit down and listen to heavy opeth, you may find that its just as beatiful as there soft stuff. god man if it was possible to have sex wth a song hope leaves would probly be the one that ide chose
@papan1990 there are a lot of songs with clean singing in Blackwater park, but yeah this is their only near entirely acoustic release so far, it's suppossed to be a sister album to Deliverance, Deliverance being the heavier one.
@papan1990 Still life has benighted and Face of melinda. Ghost reveries has Isolation years. Whatershed has burden, coil and Porcelein Heart. Blackwater park has Harvest. Those are some of the clean vocal songs I can remember.
@papan1990 Opeth have many songs like this..i would reccomend you to download the albums: ghost reveries(it has its soft side),blackwater park, watershed, morningrise.and from their early albums listen to the songs: credence, epilogue and benighted as flatron said.
download & listen them with the order i wrote.these albums are not soft(but they all have soft songs in them)
i also reccomend you to try listen to their heavy songs..you'll appreciate them in time..
@papan1990 Harvest, Coil, Burden, Hours of Wealth, Isolation Years are all soft songs. Porcelain Heart has kind of heavy music, but all the vocals are clean. If you limit yourself to just their songs with only clean vocals, you're missing out on some great songs such as The Drapery Falls and Harlequin Forest. :)
@papan1990 Harvest (Blackwater Park), Atonement, Hours of Wealth, Isolation Years (Ghost Reveries), Coil (Watershed), To Bid You Farewell (Morningrise), Benighted (Still Life). There are more, but those are some.
@papan1990 still life is an excellent albumn with a combination of vocals, harvest and face of melinda for example. listen to a fair judgement from deliverance. but in all honesty, you should man up and learn to appreciate all opeth. set aside the non-'clear' vocals and appreciate the brilliance of the music.
Mikael's voice gives me goosebumps, especially his clean singing. I saw Opeth headlining at BOA last week-- it was absolutely AMAZING. They started with Windowpane and finished with Demon of the Fall-- perfect. I would never say no to seeing them again. I've loved Opeth for a long time but always preferred Damnation. Seeing them live has given me renewed vigour for their heavier stuff too. Nonetheless, this always has, and always will be my favourite Opeth song.
i started listening to this band thanks to my biology teacher that told me they are an awesome band, and i see it's true!! i already know some awesome songs by them (hope leaves, master's apprentices, bleak,, burden and the grand conjuration) but i would like to know some more. If you know some more good songs by them please tell me! thanks
@filrocklove Black Rose Immortal, Advent, The Night and the Silent Water, In the Mist She Was Standing, The Apostle in Triumph, When, Demon of the Fall, The Moor, Godhead's Lament, Benighted, The Leper Affinity, Patterns In The Ivy, and there are so many more. Just listen to all their albums all the way through. It's the shit. They haven't written a bad song and I think they never will.
I cant really at all understand why Mikael says his voice is like "NOVICE" and think a computer created voice would better. Well, honestly I DO understand why he says so. Its the so-called "Downing-effect". They who got rare/special talents will often underestimate their talents while those with no or poor talent often overestimate their talents. And its turns out that REALLY talented persons are often very humble too. Answer to question: How did Opeth get so far?
Everyone who is reading this comment, please click on my username for my videos I made about the The Truth of the World. I have found out what the truth of life is, the truth of the world, and the truth of God. Please, I really want people to watch and listen what I have to say. No more living in false reality, no more living in illusions, no more thinking there is no way out......its time to lead your life into The Truth of the World!!!!!!!!!
@pandemichalo92 Sorry, did you say Opeth were unknown? Where do you shop for music? Just go to a decent metal store, they'll surely have every band and album you know of plus a few hundred more.
@ryder187mac The word "uknown" in the context of my sentence was as in: Mainstream and not mainstream. Opeth = Not mainstream. Not saying they should be hard to find in a decent store, but then again, they only have five of their albums where I live. *Opeth might be slightly harder to come across than Coldplay and lady gaga ^^ See what i mean?
I did download their entire discography. But soon I realized what an amazing band Opeth is and went out to buy My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, and Watershed the same day.
a unicorn just took a delicious crap in my brain.. oh wait.. just opeth..

BigTymerPimp 1 year ago
@BigTymerPimp Funny that you say that, seeing as i was just listening to one of Buckethead's clean, beautiful songs from a Real Diamond in the Rough and it was somewhat reminiscent of this. So here i am. Love this song and love Buckethead too
Dagnus284 1 year ago
@Dagnus284 Two of my favorite clean albums. Buckethead's just too good to be true.
BruisedEyeSockets 1 year ago
@Dagnus284 Buckethead almost never has a bad tone let alone a bad song. The guy is a guitar master. He also is like a musical superhero when you think about the character he plays and the story that goes with it. He is definetly one of the most understandable, yet genius artists of our time. It's sad that alot of people don't get him, because they think he is some weird shredder in a Halloween costume. Same thing when people hear Opeth they only take things at face value.
BigTymerPimp 1 year ago
@BigTymerPimp Good call man, the little lead in this reminded me of something from Electric tears.
ElJucifer 1 year ago
@ElJucifer That's exactly the album that comes to mind. His tone was perfect on that album and almost every guitar I hear with this tone reminds me of that album. That is definetly on my must have albums list for anyone.
BigTymerPimp 1 year ago
@BigTymerPimp Nice, I hate when people dismiss buckethead as noisy shred crap. Electric tears and Colma are 2 of the most beautiful album ever.
ElJucifer 1 year ago
@ElJucifer People are too quick to judge artists like him. He is actually a very interesting guy that loves his fans and all music. Who else could play lightning speed metal solo perfectly, then start doing the robot to techno music? After that play some of the most awe inspiring clean melodies to come about in the last couple of decades?
BigTymerPimp 1 year ago
@ElJucifer Hey thanks for making your comment regarding Buckethead. I was one of those people that would have written his music off as "noisy shred crap", but I'm listening to the Electric Tears album right now, and damn I was wrong. SO wrong. I'm loving it!! Can't believe I've been missing out for so long.
thatPinkFlamingo 1 year ago
@thatPinkFlamingo Really glad to hear. That album really changed my opinion of him and my guitar playing. I would definitley look into "Colma" aswell. More of that kina chilled, ambient stuff.
ElJucifer 1 year ago
@ElJucifer I will definitely look into "Colma". Thanks for the recommendation.

OPETH FOREVER!!!
mpape80 1 year ago
@mpape80 Sorry dude. But metal is meant to be cliche... Sex,satan, black, beer, war, booze, drugs, punx etc etc.

hitachi66 1 year ago
@hitachi66 I listen too all that stuff too. I also think metal is the ultimate form of sticking it to the man. But to call a band out for being popular yet original. Well let me put it this way, in my opinion there are 2 kinds of metal heads. Ones that get it and ones that don't. The ones that don't usually don't last. I've been true to metal since i was 10. So if you think your gonna school me in metal your sadly mistaken. F.O.A.D.P. FUCK OFF AND DIE POSERS!!!
mpape80 1 year ago
@hitachi66
Those are just stereotypes. Metal is a deep music genre with awesome bands.
greekville12 1 year ago
@greekville12 Exactly! I don't think that guy gets it. You and I do! I have no respect for that kind of small minded thinking. It's sad really.
mpape80 1 year ago
@hitachi66 metal is meant to be good music, i feel sorry for you and your closed mind, you obviously have no musical knowlage,
Shreddur666 1 year ago
@hitachi66 Metal comes from classical. What metal fans love the most is how the song sounds... melody.... instruments... the emotions that comes with the songs.

JobForAMaxboy 1 year ago
@papan1990 This is the only album with only soft songs, but there are many others scattered between the other albums. The ones I like the most are patterns in the ivy one and two, Credence , Benighted... and many more.
fjoa123 1 year ago
@papan1990 if you sit down and listen to heavy opeth, you may find that its just as beatiful as there soft stuff. god man if it was possible to have sex wth a song hope leaves would probly be the one that ide chose

@papan1990 a good soft song is burden ... its my favorite song
cccollinn 1 year ago
@papan1990 there are a lot of songs with clean singing in Blackwater park, but yeah this is their only near entirely acoustic release so far, it's suppossed to be a sister album to Deliverance, Deliverance being the heavier one.

@papan1990 Still life has benighted and Face of melinda. Ghost reveries has Isolation years. Whatershed has burden, coil and Porcelein Heart. Blackwater park has Harvest. Those are some of the clean vocal songs I can remember.

@papan1990 Opeth have many songs like this..i would reccomend you to download the albums: ghost reveries(it has its soft side),blackwater park, watershed, morningrise.and from their early albums listen to the songs: credence, epilogue and benighted as flatron said.
download & listen them with the order i wrote.these albums are not soft(but they all have soft songs in them)
i also reccomend you to try listen to their heavy songs..you'll appreciate them in time..
fiboR21FFAFvideos 1 year ago
@papan1990 And don't forget to check out Hours of Wealth!
lallal3 1 year ago
@papan1990 Harvest, Coil, Burden, Hours of Wealth, Isolation Years are all soft songs. Porcelain Heart has kind of heavy music, but all the vocals are clean. If you limit yourself to just their songs with only clean vocals, you're missing out on some great songs such as The Drapery Falls and Harlequin Forest. :)
ElegyForTheMasses 1 year ago
@papan1990 Harvest (Blackwater Park), Atonement, Hours of Wealth, Isolation Years (Ghost Reveries), Coil (Watershed), To Bid You Farewell (Morningrise), Benighted (Still Life). There are more, but those are some.
ThatOnePaleKid 1 year ago
@papan1990 still life is an excellent albumn with a combination of vocals, harvest and face of melinda for example. listen to a fair judgement from deliverance. but in all honesty, you should man up and learn to appreciate all opeth. set aside the non-'clear' vocals and appreciate the brilliance of the music.
darrrenarnold 1 year ago
@papan1990 Still Day Beneath the Sun, Patterns in the Ivy II & their version of Soldier of Fortune are brilliant.

@pandemichalo92 Indeed, I download albums, then I buy them if I like them, or at least when I can find them. Opeth can be hard to find.
SwornToMutilate 1 year ago
@SwornToMutilate I actually feel bad if I download xD But yeah, Opeth can be hard to find along with many other unknown/underdog-bands.
pandemichalo92 1 year ago
@pandemichalo92 Sorry, did you say Opeth were unknown? Where do you shop for music? Just go to a decent metal store, they'll surely have every band and album you know of plus a few hundred more.
ryder187mac 1 year ago
@ryder187mac The word "uknown" in the context of my sentence was as in: Mainstream and not mainstream. Opeth = Not mainstream. Not saying they should be hard to find in a decent store, but then again, they only have five of their albums where I live. *Opeth might be slightly harder to come across than Coldplay and lady gaga ^^ See what i mean?
pandemichalo92 1 year ago
@pandemichalo92 Opeth aren't mainstream but they're still huge in the metal world... but you have a point. :)
ryder187mac 1 year ago
@pandemichalo92
I did download their entire discography. But soon I realized what an amazing band Opeth is and went out to buy My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, and Watershed the same day.
