  • My teacher Jeff Radcliff is an indoor disciple of Grandmaster Chen Qingzhou. Grandmaster Chen is the man! Are there any vids of him besides the taiji ball? His martial prowess clearly demonstrates the relation between function and form.

  • there are no other vids on youtube, but you can buy his collection on other sites

  • at first i thought it wasn't that practical of a form, 'cause most of the form involved not keeping the hands lined up with the face to keep the opponent away from you, but now that i look at it.... i'd like to see applications. please, please, please! i'd like to see apps for this. it'd probably help expand my horizons....

  • Unfortunately, the VCD does not have apps. Only forms. My teacher says that this is mostly for combat, and the health applications are more secondary.

  • Silk reeling, twisting motion... any point your opponent touches you, you should be able to "wrap" around behind the force that he is applying. What part of the world are you in, bredmond? This is about the same Chen I was taught, with a few minor stylistic differences.

  • I am near Berkeley, Ca. Personally, i have only learned the zhan zhuang, and up to :50. My teacher (Bowen Guo, see my videos) is from Henan, Jiaozuo in China. I met him while going to school in Davis, Ca, which is where he lives now.

  • ha,Bowen Guo is my high school alumni

  • While some of the movements in this form can be applied directly in combat, most the combat attributes from Chen style won't necessarily look the same in action as the do in the forms. Look at some of his stepping techniques, and think of stepping "through" an opponent. The main purpose here is to change the way the body works. Loosen/realign joints, develop "root"...

  • Yeah, i have also been told something to that effect. My teacher told me that taiji is more about principles rather than a bunch of specific techniques. That might support your remarks.
