I wanted Joey and Pacey to succeed as well, but I wanted Dawson to get a clue about his own life, which he did in time. Part of Season 4 was about Dawson discovering a life beyond his childhood friends. Like you, I liked his relationships with Gretchen and Jen.

Pacey basically felt like he wasn't good enough for her. He thought that she had a great future ahead of her and he would just hold her back. He was having problems in school and also thought she would end up regreting her decision to be with him, so he was really depressed for a while. Of course Joey didn't help his insecurities any by coddling Dawson so much, even sometimes at the expense of Pacey's feelings.
6:22-6:56--that has to be one of my ultimate favorite Joey-Pacey moments. It defines why their relationship is so sweet and cute, and why it just works so darn well. ^_^
