Every scene of Heat is a masterpiece, and this one is the most perfect scene of the most perfect movie. We can feel each character don't want to kill or do anything wrong, but they have to because it's their only way of life. Cops (Pacino) are not so different from gangsters (De Niro). I never saw such a tragedy in a gangster movie because every character is human and not functional. This scene, and the restaurant scene are one of the most dramatic scene of the 90's.
@CorleoneMobfamily 20 times!!! I've seen the ending so many times I've lost count. I was bless to get the soundtrack and it's my favorite cd to this day, so many gifted and talented artist like dead can dance and moby. I love every musical piece on this soundtrack. I'm black and I wish this type of music was promoted in the african american/black community. But then I realize it is not in the best interest of illuminati hollywood to promote this type of music in our community.
@nathonas I've always kind of wondered that too, it seems like he could have shot him, but chooses not to? I dunno, I think he knew he was screwed at that point.
They sort of left somethings, like did his daughter live or die.And what happened to Val Kilmer's character but I actually could care less after such an amazing ending.
Even though Robert De Niro was the evil character in this movie, I still cried when he died. That shows how he's such a good actor. Best ending ever. I mean...I CRIED!
@ninotsertsvadze DeNiro wasn't really evil per se... He was just a thief for the sport of it... He never really wanted to kill anybody. Waingro is probably the most evil character in the movie since he murdered that black girl. Val Kilmer was deranged too in this movie.
Every time i watch this final scene it flat out FLOORS ME! I LOVE IT! everything about it is amazing, the music, the cinematography, the acting! the first time i watched this movie, a few years back, my heart felt heavy and i got goosebumps all at once. It was that powerful. Phenomenal movie. One of my favorites
I have never been more angry in my life than the day i was watching Heat on TNT, and they cut out the very last shot, which is the best part of the movie. They just showed McCauley dying and then fade to black. I was watching it with my parents in my living room and i dont think ive ever sworn at the TV so much in my life. Unless you count when Im watching the Lions.
The greatest ending of any film ever. In another life, these two characters could have been best friends. However due to their status on opposite sides of the law, it just wasn't possible. One of the greatest American film masterpieces of all time
Just a suggestion-- but I think you should place the "musical track annotation" several seconds later in the scene. It's a distraction that can wait several seconds. Thanks:-)
His character should have survived. His inability to bury past grievances with Waingro marked his fate. His stubborn nature blinded him from seeing the bigger picture. It would've been nice for him to have survived along with Kilmer.
Love how the diner scene comes into effect in this last showdown. Deniro claimed he wouldn't hesitate, but in the end, he did..and Pacino got the final say!
Neil is one of the only "villains" in history that i had plenty of sympathy for.
Easily one of the best finales ever. this 1 scene is better than most complete movies that came out this past decade. Theres just way too much greatness all over this film.
@Helrauros - I think its the best final scene ever
The movie sort of conveys a hopelessness in the characters that sort of embodies modern society. I mean a hopelessness in the sense that we're all just a bunch of robots without any real free will...here are two men, one is a "bad guy" (Deniro) the other is a "good guy" (Pacino), both are very driven to perform these roles in life...but in the end they stand hand in hand with one of them dead, hopeless
I kinda feel that, in order to add to the effect of this immensely powerful closing, Al sort of re-creates that classic gaze off into the distance that he employed at the end of Part II...the incredible acting, the brilliant capture of the mood of LA at night, the awesome music throughout - simply breathtaking; 5-star filmmaking from the great Michael Mann..
this is quite simply one of the best endings of all time. Pacino and De Niro were amazing in this movie, and Michael Mann did a superb job without a doubt. This scene gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I see it.
This is quite simply one of the best endings in cinema history. It's emotional, and gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I watch it. This film is a masterpiece
In my opinion, this last scene, and the very last shot is one of the most powerful moments in film. A lot of this power comes from Pacino's brilliant, raw acting skills. you can just sense his character's melancholy, thinking, and contemplation after shooting a man that he admired so much. this is really a work of art.
this is by far the greatest endingg because even tho the bad guy dies and u want him to get away the good guy is fuckin raw as hell too and they show each other respect it doesnt leave u with the feeling that oh the good guy is always the favorite, unlike the other crime movies where the good guy seems like a complete douche like kevin costner playing elliot ness in untouchables
I'm glad that this song was played at the end of the movie, when I first heard it I was so happy. The song to me transcends dying, how beautiful life was and how death will be.
Every time I watch this scene, at 2:25 when Pacino raises his head, looks into the distance and Moby's score kicks into second gear, I get goosebumps.
@Helrauros the best ending ever to the best movie ever... gives me goosebumps and chills everytime especially when the words "A Micheal Mann film" appear
This movie was sort of based on one of Michael Mann's earlier works, "Thief". Of course "Heat" is incomparable, but check out "Thief" if you like his work.
This scene is amazing... But secretly, i wish they made an alternate ending as a dvd extra, were Neil (De Nero) still lives. Of course they kept this scene as the original one, cuz this one is Epic...
The reason why an alternative ending? Because, despite that the one is a cop and the other a criminal, at the end, it felt like they were life long friends, saying Goodbye...
Every time i watch this, I almost cry at the ending dude :p.
They appear in this movie a bit young. I'll always remember these actors on how they appear in this movie because this is one of the first movies i've seen of them both. It's a shame they didn't do other good movies together. And i still can't believe how hollywood is coming with those bullshit so called "action movies" now a days I guess the 90's was the golden age of film making....
I tell ya, if that scene doesnt move you, you have a hole where you soul should be! What a supreme irony: two obsessed characters, yet the one who gets killed is freed, while the survivor must live on...alone. Bravo!
This is to me without question the greatest piece of cinema I have ever seen!! Everything about this movie was incredibly well done (cinematography, acting, directing, screenplay, score, etc...). Public enemies was good but not even close to this film!!!
