What was amazing about the CT's was the era they were in. Vocal was not easy to be new wave in a post punk time so all credit to them for hanging in. Although for Goth Industrial I do prefer Dead Can Dance
"Beatles; Stones; Doors; Radiohead; Beach Boys; Nirvana; Elvis; Dylan; Hendrix" in the same list? Come on! Cocteau were an interesting band. In the eighties not everybody could make music or even afford the hardware to learn but we had an advantage, we had the urge to say something. This is why we all got into music, not to be on xFactor. Yesterday we had Led Zeppelin. Today we have crap like Nirvana. I love the Cocteau but one thing is taste, one thing is rock music. That list is sacrilege.

finally! a high quality video of them live. the others are so low quality one would have the impression they aren't good live - which is NOT the case! they were awesome both times I saw them.
saw then in 1985,blown away to this day NEVER heard a voclist of this calibre since any one for cheryl cole and her clones .what have they done to our music industry. is there no real talent out there???????????????
The first time I knew I was in love and kissed that woman for the first time this song was playing in the room. Lights were low, sandalwood candles were burning. It was beautiful, she was beautiful.
Simon Cowell and his co conspiriters should listen to this and hang their heads in shame for inflicting the talentless and tuneless morons from their so-called talent shows onto the gullible fools that buy their muzak
@fakenhamman ...I like your comment as I love music like this so much. I doubt it would even register on simon Cowells radar as he doesnt have any good taste in music whatsoever, the bloke is a talentless old boring bastard all about making the next few millions. I would bet he has never hear of the Cocteau Twins, and do you know what, Im glad!! He doesnt deserve good music!!
@coltsuperocean10 Actually I think Simon Cowell does have taste in music. But he realizes the general public does not, and there is no way he can make money with good music. So...
@fakenhamman Agreed- but also hanging their heads should be the legions of so-called cultural commentators who praise Lady Gaga for 'originality & creativity' just because she wears clothes made out of garbage and constructs an 'outrageous' media image.
Here is a woman dressed like an anonymous office worker, not doing anything stupid- just producing great, timeless music.
I saw these live, I adored them and still have every piece of vinyl they ever issued (in the UK) the most stunning vocals and Robin's multi effect guitar playing is just perfect.
The 1st song by CT that I heard. I quickly became a fan after hearing this song. I went out and bought "The Pink Opaque" and bought everyone of there records after this. Just incredible musicians and Liz Fraser's vocals are awesome!! o_O
@basehead617 she is the most UNCOVERABLE vocalist i've ever heard... this is one of the reasons i think much of her live stuff is not nearly as good as the studio, because EVEN SHE can't match her best... of course the sound in this vid sucks...
@glorp896 Interesting. My feelings are completely different - I find the CT's live recordings fascinating and superb, but I'm bored to death with their studio albums. And I'm someone who usually prefers studio recordings in general. I love the whole scene this band came out of, I love new wave and post-punk synth and 80s alternative, but CT's studio work just cloys and grates - I find it *too* perfect, by which I mean that I find it sounds too crystalline, almost saccharine. But I love them live
@belzondium interesting. conversely in another genre i found iron maiden to be a bland kind of generic and even childish metal act for a long time (being all white collar suburban into the more academic and smart "metal" of RUSH)... so i never got into maiden, but i heard they were amazing live... and live DID make a big difference - stunningly... but live almost never really is better than studio, except with live you get the vib of the crowd and the sound system in a large arena - not fooled
@glorp896 Yeah, agreed, the sound on this isn't the best - but she CAN sing live to amazing effect. Of the thousands of live shows I've been to in my lifetime, only Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) was more unearthly impressive.
@OpiceSF she's got pipes! Dead Can Dance - The Host Of Seraphim reminded me of some of Godfrey Reggio's work as in Koyaanisqatsi and his follow ups... IMDB gives Koy. 8.2 score... watch it and tell me what u think, its UNLIKE any "movie" you've ever seen - zero dialogue, no actors - just moving images and music that tell an incredible story... i saw Phillip glass's concert based on his music work for this "movie" sensation...
@glorp896 I'm well aware of Koyaanisqatsi - seen it many times. Ironically, the cinematographer Ron Fricke, went on to direct a similar film with music composed by...Dead Can Dance. It's called Baraka, and if you liked Koyaanisqatsi, you'll like Baraka! I actually prefer Baraka because the music is so good.
@OpiceSF oooo again, 8.3 on IMDB, beats our Koy. by a .1, lovely! so much fun to quantify beauty... thanks for making the connection and plugging some OOOO stuff for me!
perhaps even more noteworthy when one considers the fashions of their fan base (circa 1984). In a climate of loyal Dr. Seuss eyeliner punks, she dons most classic pearls...
As for the music...
"trying to talk about music is like trying to dance about architecture"
The dance about architecture quote is from Frank Zappa. I'm trying to find a source for a quote, something along the lines of music is like dreaming out loud, I think it was Johnny Marr but haven't found the confirmation yet.
one of the most sensory bands that ever graced our unconsciousness. Further proof that god is woman (signed : horny-as-ever-heterosexual ATHEIST wanting boring old white people to "allow their entropic nature and sUPER-fEAR-sIZED Mia$mIATISED lowest common-denominator constructs with high fences
@Amazical why bring race into it? I see more fanaticism over religion from non-white people than I do from whites. So its not even as if there is an y logic to what you're saying.
I agree thast a female singer does tend to make music more sensual although Gil Scott Heron and others do buck the trend.
Funny when I was intot his in early mid 80s most women ran a mile if I tried to get romantic with this stuff. Spandau feckin Ballet on the other hand....
Listening to this beautiful soundscape has transported me back 22 years to a time when the world and I were much more innocent and I spent many a passion filled day and night with a beautiful woman, this song as part of the soundtrack, hearing it again for the first time has been an incredible rush of memory and nostalgia...wow and thanks for putting it on here...
@UniversalMined Yeah well I had a sheet of tetragrammaton. This is me (Her) the singer telling you i am a saint...i am a witch...i am a saint...i am a witch. You are a 666. I am a 777. you are simply a euphoric truth telling sissy. DOD will polygraph your memory of gay. Cut your penis with a pentagon shaped clear shard of glass and you will pass.
i'm guessing that she takes lyrics and just muddles them into vocal techniques? or is it just plain vocals? either way, its the most interesting thing i have ever herad
@musicalman1995 she's a drunk college girl sorority witch that don't know what a broomstick is for. i invaded her she used a lot of teeth. she bit in half. o well i still have 5". she smokes a big hit of crack and talks backwards. mystery solved.
@musicalman1995 She doesn't just mumble.........This is what people over the years got wrong about her!! She sings in a scottish accent.....Because Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance were the biggest promoters of the 4AD label in the 1980's, everyone assumed Elizabeth sang the same way Lisa did.....soooooooooooo totally wrong!!! Anyway...I love them both!!!
they make me want to cry every time, just too beautiful, nothing is this beautiful and deep anymore. now the world is gaga, perry's, agularias. ugg bunch of stage whores. makes me sick.
Zero stage presence--my kinda band.

finally! a high quality video of them live. the others are so low quality one would have the impression they aren't good live - which is NOT the case! they were awesome both times I saw them.

They went beyond music and created an Art all of their own. Wont be copied and wont be equalled, simply outstanding.

He doesnt deserve good music!!
coltsuperocean10 10 months ago
@coltsuperocean10 Actually I think Simon Cowell does have taste in music. But he realizes the general public does not, and there is no way he can make money with good music. So...
Lunarwill 10 months ago
@fakenhamman Agreed- but also hanging their heads should be the legions of so-called cultural commentators who praise Lady Gaga for 'originality & creativity' just because she wears clothes made out of garbage and constructs an 'outrageous' media image.
Here is a woman dressed like an anonymous office worker, not doing anything stupid- just producing great, timeless music.
FAME IS TEMPORARY, CLASS IS PERMANENT.

I saw these live, I adored them and still have every piece of vinyl they ever issued (in the UK) the most stunning vocals and Robin's multi effect guitar playing is just perfect.

FUCKING INCREDIBLE VOCAL!!!!!!!!!!!
basehead617 1 year ago 20
@basehead617 she is the most UNCOVERABLE vocalist i've ever heard... this is one of the reasons i think much of her live stuff is not nearly as good as the studio, because EVEN SHE can't match her best... of course the sound in this vid sucks...
glorp896 8 months ago
@glorp896 Interesting. My feelings are completely different - I find the CT's live recordings fascinating and superb, but I'm bored to death with their studio albums. And I'm someone who usually prefers studio recordings in general. I love the whole scene this band came out of, I love new wave and post-punk synth and 80s alternative, but CT's studio work just cloys and grates - I find it *too* perfect, by which I mean that I find it sounds too crystalline, almost saccharine. But I love them live
belzondium 8 months ago
@belzondium interesting. conversely in another genre i found iron maiden to be a bland kind of generic and even childish metal act for a long time (being all white collar suburban into the more academic and smart "metal" of RUSH)... so i never got into maiden, but i heard they were amazing live... and live DID make a big difference - stunningly... but live almost never really is better than studio, except with live you get the vib of the crowd and the sound system in a large arena - not fooled
glorp896 8 months ago
@glorp896 Yeah, agreed, the sound on this isn't the best - but she CAN sing live to amazing effect. Of the thousands of live shows I've been to in my lifetime, only Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) was more unearthly impressive.
OpiceSF 6 months ago
@OpiceSF she's got pipes! Dead Can Dance - The Host Of Seraphim reminded me of some of Godfrey Reggio's work as in Koyaanisqatsi and his follow ups... IMDB gives Koy. 8.2 score... watch it and tell me what u think, its UNLIKE any "movie" you've ever seen - zero dialogue, no actors - just moving images and music that tell an incredible story... i saw Phillip glass's concert based on his music work for this "movie" sensation...
SEE RANK
Koyaanisqatsi
glorp896 6 months ago
@glorp896 I'm well aware of Koyaanisqatsi - seen it many times. Ironically, the cinematographer Ron Fricke, went on to direct a similar film with music composed by...Dead Can Dance. It's called Baraka, and if you liked Koyaanisqatsi, you'll like Baraka! I actually prefer Baraka because the music is so good.

@OpiceSF ooooo! matched and exceeded, touche! but really, thanks for the tip, will get right on it!

perhaps even more noteworthy when one considers the fashions of their fan base (circa 1984). In a climate of loyal Dr. Seuss eyeliner punks, she dons most classic pearls...
As for the music...

@billiamian
The dance about architecture quote is from Frank Zappa. I'm trying to find a source for a quote, something along the lines of music is like dreaming out loud, I think it was Johnny Marr but haven't found the confirmation yet.

Listening to this beautiful soundscape has transported me back 22 years to a time when the world and I were much more innocent and I spent many a passion filled day and night with a beautiful woman, this song as part of the soundtrack, hearing it again for the first time has been an incredible rush of memory and nostalgia...wow and thanks for putting it on here...

birdhaldol 1 year ago
@musicalman1995 She doesn't just mumble.........This is what people over the years got wrong about her!! She sings in a scottish accent.....Because Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance were the biggest promoters of the 4AD label in the 1980's, everyone assumed Elizabeth sang the same way Lisa did.....soooooooooooo totally wrong!!! Anyway...I love them both!!!
