The point of the Freestyle is for the pro and the celebrity to incorporate ideas that they both feel represent their personalities and mash it together. Kristi Yamaguchi loved Michael Jackson, hence the MJ-themed Freestyle. Jennifer Grey picked a song from 'Dirty Dancing'. Brooke Burke loved Grease. I felt Mark taught Bristol this freestyle like any other routine, rather than let Bristol help.
I actually think Mark did a really good jon on this freestyle. He's always creative, especially the use of the pink sash made our attention go straight to it instead of her footwork. He did the best he could...

I felt really sorry for Bristol throughout this entire season. It was clear that she wasn't at the skill level of the other dancers (not her fault - some people are better dancers than others), but so many people kept her in for political reasons. It seemed cruel, because even she knew that she wasn't keeping up, and it looked humiliating. I think that her fans did her more of a disservice than a service by making her do this freestyle, poor girl.

I think Bristol did the best she could with this dance. Although I think Mark really was the one who screwed it up, he should have done a number that he knew Bristol would have been good at. It's hard not to think of Catherine Zeta Jones when watching this and I think that's what killed it for some people. Overall I enjoyed it though.

I have watched this freestyle several times on YouTube and I really enjoyed it. Bristol was not the strongest dancer, in the competion, but I thought this dance showed how much she improved from Week 1. I think that Bristol and Mark had great chemistry in all of their dances, and I really enjoyed watching them. I just finished reading her autobiography and she said that Mark was a great teacher and very patient with her and this is obvious while watching their dances.

And to see who improved the most, which was Bristol. She was far from a great dancer, but considering she had no musical background and didn't listen to todays music or even see a play, she did pretty good. I felt Mark overdid danced sometimes to take the pressure off of Bristol. This dance wasn't bad at all, she came a long way.
This is a dance competition, not a political show. People need to learn to separate those two because Bristol tried her best and people don't like her just because of her last name. Look at her from a dance competition perspective instead of a political one.

I remember Len saying something a few seasons ago how the only reason you would choreograph a long intro or a routine without as much real dancing is if your partner can't dance. That's kind of what I was reminded of in this freestyle.
You need to check out Julianne and Hélio's to find out what real talent looks like. I am no professional dancer by any means but I could have done better than Bristol Abstinence Palin.

This is not directed to Bristol, but to every DWTS contestant: ANYTHING from a Broadway show is the "kiss of death." Mark should have brought in one of the actual performers from the show to help her get into character. A better song along the same lines: Lee Ann Rimes "Nothing Better To Do". Bristol's lack of self-confidence ties into her strength in being a woman.

Let me say this first: She wasn't my original choice. I will agree -she was better in this dance than the judges rated (btw- NEVER do a Broadway show dance in the Free Style). I never saw a contestant so scared of her own body, abilities=self-defeating thoughts, and this far in the competition. Mark should have asked her what music makes her move with (secret) abandon, and built a dance around that comfort level.
Like I said to on someones comments she could have won if she would of had fun with it. I mean she is a great dancer or she wouldn't have made it to the last three. Bristol complained to much. I think that if she actually tried and tried to enjoy it she would have done much better. You could see how exhasperated mark was with her. Remember that both Sarah and Bristol use the words "hate" and "haters" with people who simply disagree with them. I don't think you can hate a person you don't know, but you can strongly disagree with what they say or do - it's just easier to say hate them.
That's for sure. I thought so, too. But as with every season, the picks are never who they're supposed to be because people watch for popularity more than actual DANCING (which is strange given it's a DANCING show).
I think this is an excellent example of how one's attitude/mindset makes all the difference in life; I think the only thing holding Bristol back is herself
I have to say as a girl who's shy and that has never seen chicago did so awesome for the dance! I've never really watched dancing with the stars but I love the play of chicago. And when i heard about this dance I couldn't believe it! Once i saw it I loved it! :)
The first problem is that he choreographed a dance she obviously wouldn't be comfortable with... I heard the first bars of Cell Block Tango and immediately thought, "After all this time, and he really doesn't know her at all?" I mean, look at her expression throughout that performance. He should have done one of the dances that at least made her smile, like that instant cha cha cha - anything to wipe that blank stare off her face. Trying to do this dance was really just setting her up to fail...
@HailDorothyPenner I agree with you - I kept wondering what he was thinking. She would have been much better off dancing something similar to Kyle - hiphop or something where she was having fun. There didn't seem to be much dancing in this freestyle, but she made it to the finals and that is an accomplishment.
It wasnt bad for what it was. I agree that the choreography that mark did was amazing. She didnt use her hips- at ALL. You dont have to act like a sex kitten for this song but come on! Use SOME hips.
She could have pulled him along the floor better- he did amazing, falling all over himself, pretending he was being pulled by her.

i was REALLL disappointed with mark choreography this season. i dont know whats going on. this was really good, but i just watched over his past freestyles and this was a big let down. i realize she cant do those crazy lifts but i was expecting something else besides a tango. and marks choreo this season seemed like a bunch of shimmying. i hope he does well next season.

@KymJohnsonisawinner I think he didn't have a lot to work with, if you noticed Bristol did better at the serious dances rather than the fun and charismatic ones, Mark's freestyles are usually fun and exciting so I think he had to pick a dance that was right for Bristol. first time rewatching bristol's freestyle since the finale, and after watching the cell block tango scene from chicago. wasn't crazy about this dance the first time but really like it after watching it a second time. very original idea for a freestyle and executed well. you can't really compare it to the original chicago dance anyway since it was so different

Really, Mark is a brilliant choreographer because it was such a super simple routine.The judges capitulated to public opinion, they realized the voters were not listening to their expert opinion and being the finale they had to give her a more decent score. It's not Mark its her. He is fantastic dancer and choreographer, but you can only do so much with an untrained and untalented celebrity I mean if Kristi or Shawn had this same routine everyone would be saying how awesome it is because Chicago is a classic. Bristol just sucks as a dancer

wat kinda freestyle is dis?! it DIDN'T have the *concept* of the freestyle! its the freestyle that should show off ur unique style, ur personality, ur hobbies, ur strengths etc, its all you! the couples should come up w/an idea 2gether, which used 2 happen! the freestyle used 2 have the rite concept of it, and used 2 b sooooo creative! now all it is is sumthin that the pros come up with themselves! besides, this looked more like a modern ballroom dance than a freestyle!

I have nothing against Bristol she seems like a nice kid and everyone wants to say that she should not be blamed because of who her mother is but the reality is she only last as long as she did on the show because of who her mother is. She cant dance she has NO rhythm she is stiff as a board and her best is not enough for a spot in the finals

That cage dance was pretty good. But as Carrie Ann and Bruno said she's not putting enough emotions in her body which doesn't make the dance believable.

She's so fat, stiff, and ugly I can't stand her! Clearly Mark had to overdance to overcompensate for her lack of progress, talent or skill! He obviously had to drag her fat buttery ass all over the dance floor to do anything, and she was always crying about going home, take your fat buttery sorry ass home then! What a LOSER!

Let me say this first: She wasn't my original choice. I will agree -she was better in this dance than the judges rated (btw- NEVER do a Broadway show dance in the Free Style). I never saw a contestant so scared of her own body, abilities=self-defeating thoughts, and this far in the competition. Mark should have asked her what music makes her move with (secret) abandon, and built a dance around that comfort level.

Like I said to on someones comments she could have won if she would of had fun with it. I mean she is a great dancer or she wouldn't have made it to the last three. She acted so uptight and like no one there wanted her there but she never just worried about what she was doing. She should of just said screw what people think this is my time and just gone all the way with out complaining about it all and just had a good time like the others. Her biggest down fall was her emotion timing in dances.

Bristol complained to much. I think that if she actually tried and tried to enjoy it she would have done much better. You could see how exhasperated mark was with her. She felt sorry for herself and used the "I've never had any show experience before" and the "I can't dance" excuses to take the blame off of herself. Just my opinion.

@fungirl4299 The words "hate" and "love" can be words of convenience when you can't think of anything else. Remember that both Sarah and Bristol use the words "hate" and "haters" with people who simply disagree with them. I don't think you can hate a person you don't know, but you can strongly disagree with what they say or do - it's just easier to say hate them.

That's for sure. I thought so, too. But as with every season, the picks are never who they're supposed to be because people watch for popularity more than actual DANCING (which is strange given it's a DANCING show).

I have to say as a girl who's shy and that has never seen chicago did so awesome for the dance! I've never really watched dancing with the stars but I love the play of chicago. And when i heard about this dance I couldn't believe it! Once i saw it I loved it! :)

The first problem is that he choreographed a dance she obviously wouldn't be comfortable with... I heard the first bars of Cell Block Tango and immediately thought, "After all this time, and he really doesn't know her at all?" I mean, look at her expression throughout that performance. He should have done one of the dances that at least made her smile, like that instant cha cha cha - anything to wipe that blank stare off her face. Trying to do this dance was really just setting her up to fail...

@HailDorothyPenner I agree with you - I kept wondering what he was thinking. She would have been much better off dancing something similar to Kyle - hiphop or something where she was having fun. There didn't seem to be much dancing in this freestyle, but she made it to the finals and that is an accomplishment.

It wasnt bad for what it was. I agree that the choreography that mark did was amazing. She didnt use her hips- at ALL. You dont have to act like a sex kitten for this song but come on! Use SOME hips.
She could have pulled him along the floor better- he did amazing, falling all over himself, pretending he was being pulled by her.
It was brilliant choreography and dancing- from MARK.

So its not as good or flashing as some of his other freestyles but Bristol is no Shawn or Kristi
Its like expecting Kym to do the kind of freestyle she did with Tom williams(aussie dwts) or Danny osmond with Jerry Springer or David hasselhawk
He did what he could to do the best dance they could you cant ask for anything more.

i was REALLL disappointed with mark choreography this season. i dont know whats going on. this was really good, but i just watched over his past freestyles and this was a big let down. i realize she cant do those crazy lifts but i was expecting something else besides a tango. and marks choreo this season seemed like a bunch of shimmying. i hope he does well next season.

@KymJohnsonisawinner I think he didn't have a lot to work with, if you noticed Bristol did better at the serious dances rather than the fun and charismatic ones, Mark's freestyles are usually fun and exciting so I think he had to pick a dance that was right for Bristol. Hopefully he'll get a good partner next season.

first time rewatching bristol's freestyle since the finale, and after watching the cell block tango scene from chicago. wasn't crazy about this dance the first time but really like it after watching it a second time. very original idea for a freestyle and executed well. you can't really compare it to the original chicago dance anyway since it was so different

I have to say, Bristol did her best here, but that is not saying much given how badly she was doing. Really, Mark is a brilliant choreographer because it was such a super simple routine.The judges capitulated to public opinion, they realized the voters were not listening to their expert opinion and being the finale they had to give her a more decent score. One judge compliment was, "did I just see Bristol Palin in a cage?" Mark himself can't believe how she complains and her cluelessness

Guess the fact that she wanted to give everyone who was against her "the middle finger" makes me so happy that the voters actually did the same to her. She had no business being in the finals because she didn't have the talent, there were far better dancers than her so actually "she had it coming"! Hopefully she will go back to Alaska and take care of her 2 kids!
