@FredsMinecraft You're right, the gate does make a very long annoying sound. My location for my gate is always located depending on how far I want it from my house to avoid the sounds vs how far I want to travel to enter it and still be safe from spawns.

@patyos2 yeah but you need a diamond pickaxe or you have to mine 50 seconds without getting the obsidian. THIS guy is too lazy to find diamonds (or he's not enough luck) so he makes his portal WITHOUT a need of a diamond pickaxe.

Not really efficient at all considering all the time used to get the lava,build the frame,set up the water,put the lava in,release water,seal off water,repeat,then teardown the frame.

Effiecient would be just to sneak on the edge of the block right up against the obsidian while mining it, so it doesn't fall in the lava, or just dig under the obsidian and put a block under it if there's lava under it.

@dec5952 Why does everyone fail to mention the fact you have to find diamond first? You can build a hellgate next to lava, so you can literaly waste no time getting lava. Placing lava, really? You could have a bucket of water and ketch it, repeat for like what, 5 times of placing dirt or cobble stone? and tearing it down is half the fun. All these combined are way more efficient than finding Diamond and standing over an edge of lava where you might fall in or your loot will. Safe and Efficient.

@MythologicalGames Mostly because it's really easy to find Diamonds, this is the most efficient way to make one IF you don't have Diamond tools, but if you do my way is more effiecient,also sneaking against the obsidian as you break it makes sure you'll catch it and that you won't fall into any lava.

Yes I know you can make a nether gate with 10 obsidian. I've already admitted that last year. Once again people fail to mention the finding of diamonds to their efficient equation. You are comparing placing enough blocks to make a mold with the usual way to make a gate.

There is an easier way to make a portal. You need a redstone, a bucket of water and ONLY one bucket of lava.

What you're talking about is a bug that will be patched by the time the game is finished. However you'll need at least an iron pickaxe to pick redstone. You can make my version with just a stone pickaxe.

@megaairsoft15 lol i have not experimented with that yet. That would be a messed up prank lol. I would image it would create a portal randomly else where but now that you mention that. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to place a TNT... spark it just before you warp away and that will turn off the purple part of the portal. So you could get people stuck there.

Actually you can't get people permamently stuck in there, since they can always kill theirselves in the Nether and then they automatically respawn in the normal world. ;)

@20riders07 Because Notch first called it a Hellgate and made plans for it to be like Hell (which is why it resembles Hell). Then got too many complaints about using the word Hell, some people found it very offensive. So he changed it to The Nether. You can read Notch's Tumblr for his other suggestions he would had called it and the information I just told you. That's why I still call it Hellgate (because that's what it actually is).

It's now called a nether portal.. anyone nowadays playing Minecraft knows it's called a nether portal, and when you want to search for something about it, you're going to get a lot more about it if you put what it's really called. normal hell gate is like 14 blocks, you can make them even smaller than 14 blocks, every block (no matter how long it takes to destroy the block) takes 1 damage of an diamond pickaxe. so mining cobblestone or dirt takes as much damage as obidian.. why would this be better for your pickaxe if you have to mine all the cobblestone away? :o

How i made my portal:

TOO MANY ITEMS MOD lol no.. i do have it but before i had it this how i made it.

First i made 2X3 cobblestone square i dug out below it then made a glass case to contain of course lava.. I poured the lava (It took a entire day to get it still) Then all i did was pour water and turn the lava into obsidian, I Mined out the cobblestone then boom 4X5 obsidian portal i lit inside and walked through. The reason i did it like this because my quest for diamonds failed.. Hard.

@MrFinish54 That happened to me a few times too. I don't know what's up with it but it may have something to do with Notch's comment awhile ago. He said something about using Hellgates to teleport you from location to location in non-hellworld by traveling through Hell. This was before he got emails to change the name Hellgate. I don't know if Notch's tumblr goes that far back but it was a couple after Hellgates were made.
