Ill back up the les paul guys! its was originally called les paul but they changed to sg as les paul himself prefered the les paul guitar. my grandad ownes an sg than says les paul so do i but mines an epiphone reissue
The SG design was originally a new design for the Les Paul. Gibson discontinued the original design in favour of the "SG" shape. Then guys like Eric Clapton started using the older Les Pauls and that design came back into fashion. Also it was said that Les Paul himself didn't like the new shape, so they went back to the old Les Paul shape and renamed the newer one the SG.
Right, but that looks like a late 60s SG not 1962 as Graham said (just my guess obviously). It has features of a late 60s SG Special, with the wrap around / batwing pickguard and P90 pick ups. In photos you can also see Graham has removed the vibrola, leaving the 3 screw holes, just like what Pete Townshend used to do.
Didn't he used to have an older Les Paul back in the Leisure days? I loved the sound he got off it. Really a joy to watch him play it live. I don't see it anymore probably because they wanted to move away from that shoegaze sound. Oh well.
Yup, agree with all of the above comments about the SG being known as Les Paul originally etc. but I wouldn't have thought a 62 SG would have a batwing pickguard and vibrola (which GC has removed, see the 3 screw holes on the body in pictures), at least not an original 62 SG. That looks more like a late 60's SG Special to me.
SG's were called les pauls back in the day. It came from the les paul design so they called it the SG les paul. But aparently Les Paul wasent too keen on them so asked them to take his name off when the contract finished or soemthing.
The first models of the guitar we know as the SG, were called Les Pauls they were introduced in 1961, however, Les Paul was not satisfied about the durability of the neck / body join and asked for his name to be taken off. Apparently Gibson still had lots of the badges left over so they were still calling them that until 1963 it was only then that they changed the name to SG which stands for Solid Guitar.
en popscene usa una les paul,en beetlebum una mustang y en la de song 2 no se cual(pero estoy casi seguro de q es una ibanez),pero no era suya, pues en el video la avienta y la rompe

If your questioning Graham Coxon, just type 1962 Les Paul, into google.

I base both my fashion sense AND my guitar playing on Mr Coxon. He was using a black 72' Deluxe Telecaster on the reunion tour x

It's a Rickenbacker 330.. he probably liked it so much coz Paul Weller used to play one, and Johnny Marr. I think.
