  • It is obvious that this group is mostly classically trained. And if this isn't the case, they didn't learn jazz when they tried to. This performance is not jazz! Pick fitting repertoire.

  • @superguinwhoflies Yes, this school (Augusta State University) only offers "classical" training We get some basic jazz technique when we're given such material, but we're all so used to the "legit" style that it can be hard to do a true jazz sound. But this was our first public performance as a group and of t hat piece. We did the song again later that semester with a faster tempo and better use of style, but it was still nowhere near being perfect.

  • @RoseofGilead Lastly, this particular ensemble is a collegiate one, and its primary purpose is (obviously) to educate its participants. In the years I was in this group, we did everything from Palestrina to Mozart to Duke Ellington to Henry Mancini. So, even though the group may not be comprised of trained jazz performers, that doesn't mean that they can't perform jazz on occasion, even if it the performance doesn't quite match the style needed.

  • This is so wrong. This arrangement should NEVER, I repeat NEVER be sang with choir robes on.

  • @halcyonacoustic Haha. Well, we weren't wearing robes; we were wearing long black dresses (women) and tuxes (men). But I know what you mean. It always feels odd wearing formal wear when you're singing jazz or pop standards.
