No (Google maps uses some private API so it doesn't work with GPSSerial), but you can use it with xGPS which has a lot more options than Google Maps.

You will need the iGPS360 to supply the GPS signal and then you need a navigation app. If you use xGPS you can download maptiles in advance for your local area (just check if there are Google maptiles available). Or you can use an AppStore app for your area.

It will be possible, but unlikely. With the release of 3.0, appstore apps are now allowed to access the dock connector, but there would still have to be a legitimate app that uses the gps module, and apple might not want 3rd party hardware to be utilized.

Yes, you can download maps and directions to your iPod before you go on the road. You just won't be able to re-calculate your route on the road (at least for the 1.x version of xGPS).

Currently Apple doesn't allow dock connector access in its SDK and as such the module won't work with any AppStore apps. Third party developers can write apps for the module though as they are not restricted by the Apple SDK. Hopefully more program will become available over time.

The first generation iPhone and the iPod Touch don't have any built-in GPS. That's why you need an add-on.

Right now it only works with xGPS and Roadmap on firmware 2.x. Simba's hike app will be ported to firmware 2.x as well. I am currently working on a mobilesubstrate plugin to try and get the module to work with AppStore apps.
