We're still a young species, only barely out of the trees. The question is will be be able to hold off on destroying ourselves long enough so that we can actually meet our true potential. Right now we look pretty doomed, but as we haven't blown ourselves up yet we still have a shot. Carlin was pretty pessimistic,and he had good reason to be, we're assholes as a species, but nothing is set in stone and the future is up to us.
I hope Carlin was wrong and we do make it.

He was a fine comedian, and I love his material, but I've lately come to realize that he was too nihilistic about humanity, throwing in the towel and saying I don't care for my species, doesn't really create or give any solutions to our current wreck.
