  • I reiterate I can help you with this tightening problem..... 316 is non magnetic, if it is magnetic it is not 316, and has a false grading guy, sorry to say... but not all folks I have discovered are honest... sorry..

    thom.

  • change you're suppliers, they have put a certain amount of older plate material in to you're order, loose the supplier.

    Thom.

  • are the spacers not conductive ? hence create shorts ?

    Thom.

  • Larry,

Metal in constant contact with strong magnets will become slightly magnetized. This is why you are experiencing magnetized plates.

  • Larry,

Good job on explaining what is happening in the video and thanks! IMO I don't think you should re-blast the plates. In fact, I would instead clean off the surface iron, passivate then reinstall. Alkaline - Acid - Alkaline (a.k.a. AAA).

  • Larry i have seen that black form on stainless before. it forms on the racks i use at work.it starts out copperish and over time it turns black.the racks hold crucibles and get baked at up to 975 Celsius but mostly at 430 Celsius.it must be oxidation of the metal probably a form of magnetite.it would be nice if you could show weather or not your coating helps or inhibits production.

this black coating is also probably the same stuff that was on the back of your nano coated plates.

  • In SS the level of magnetism is related to the level of working, so heavily worked material is most magnetic. Is it possible that the media blasting amplified it? Does the steel get and stay very hot during that procedure.

  • @KyleCarrington No, In fact it was extremely cold at the time I blasted the plates. They didn't even get slightly warm. They stayed cold the entire time.

    Larry

  • Damn Larry..... There is a lot of information and data to be processed with all of the work you are doing. Great video series so far.

  • Are the rods 315 SS ?

  • @llewgnal Yes, The rods, nuts, and washers are 316 stainless. I have completed the tear down. UI have a second video but have not had time to process it. That one rod was actually conducting electricity shorting part of the cell.

    Larry

  • Do the gaskets conduct with the ohm meter,? 316 shouldn't be magnetic,? maybe it came from china, lol. Some black gasket material is colored with carbon.

    Have fun

    Gary

  • @llewgnal I always take a magnet with me when buying 316,but if you bought it online that's hard to do,lol. Seems like you would have noticed the magnetic propreties as you were assemblying it ?

  • @llewgnal No the gaskets do not conduct electricity at all. 316L stainless is slightly magnetic if you use a strong enough magnet. With that smaller one I was using in the video I usually can't detect any magnatism. Before I assembled it I could not detect any with that one but could with the huge magnets I have. Now after running it the smaller one is attracted to them. I will check again after cleaning. I suspect it may be the iron leaching out.

    Larry

  • @HHOPWR That's what I was wondering , if the allthread is 316 or 308 and is electroplateing the plates with the iron, if iron leashes out of the plates they would be less magnetic wouldn't they ?

    Gary

  • just a thought, maybe such a tiny minuscule amount of water is leaking out that by the time it reaches the surface it may have evaporated just a thought.

an idea, maybe make the water heavier and flow better with gravity and pressure by having a larger reservoir as the beasty get's so hot and thirsty it could help, just an idea.

  • if the holes were getting plugged by the black magnetic particles it would cause pressure within the cell and may have contributed to the leaking. Just a thought.

  • Thank you very much for posting this vid..

    Dang good work.

The black looks like carbon build up with some iron in the mix.
