Whale research is important. Recent population growth, abnormal weather and diastrophism may cause food shortage in the future. It is not wise to depend only on livestock industry or fish farming for meat or fish. Whale meat can be important food. Further, if there is no whaling, a number of whales will grow too large and they will eat too much fish decreasing fish resource considerably.
im all for protecting whales but i get angry when people complain and protest that the japanese have captured some guy who illegally boarded a vessel in international waters...the japanese crew have every right to detain him without any legal problems at all....the guy knew the risk and that it was illegal to do what he did....

The Japs dont even eat much whale meat anymore. If you look closer at the killed whales you will see that there are only minke whales. These whales are not endangered. There are approximately 300000 to 500000 of them in the oceans. The Japs kill about 500 to 680 of them per season. The Japs are not the only whalers, Norway kills even more whales (minke whales) than the Japs per season. About 1000 minke whales get killed every year maybe one endangered whale every two years.Whale Wars= Propaganda

Those Minke are in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. The Japanese government has been asked many times by the IWC to limit the lethal research inside the Sanctuary borders.
