Anyone know what his secrets were to getting this tone? And im talking specifics not just his gear but also knobs and what not. It sounds like what Jack White is trying to imitate but way more raw and authentic.
TONE to the BONE!!! btw regarding the drummer's wallet - as a drummer myself, this has long been common practice, not just in Chicago. It's to deaden the ring that some snares have, it gives the snare more of a "splat" sound than a springy "sproing" sound by keeping the wire snares on the bottom drum head from rebounding farther with each hit of the drumstick.
The Fantastic, the incredible, the magical, Magic Sam, Americas finest , who possessed ah greatness which is timeless .. The magic still remains ..
and the golden vibrato voice entertains and reaches across time and space to haunt us...
A million thank to whom ever posted these gems.. BRAVO.! You will undoubtably be blessed with good karma for the entire 2011-2012-2013 NCAA College Football seasons... Well done .....
The story goes is that drummers (from Chicago) would play with their wallet on the snare drum to avoid being pick pocketed while they play. Even if it isn't true...it makes a good story.
look at the guitar its earl hookers gibson! 32 seconds into the clip! they did that show together and sam prob broke a string but something happened to sams gitar so he used earl hookers!
@actualart - Given the exclamation you used to describe Sam ("Wow!!!"), you should do a search on Youtube using the following terms: "Freddie King Wow." It will take you to Freddie's version of the same boogie Sam plays here. Both are very much worth hearing. Both are among the greatest electric blues guitarists that ever lived. They pushed the envelope more than any of their contemporaries, IMO.

Anyone know the story behind the 'Earl Hooker' guitar he's using? Sounds great and wish it lasted longer.

@EKWalmsley
Supposedly MS borrowed guitars a lot for his gigs, rather than carrying one around. Earl Hooker played at the same show and MS just used his.

I like how the drummer uses his wallet to dampen the snare drum.
