  • Robert Goulet was a Canadian: not an American

  • America is a continent.

  • Yes, but the USA has commandeered the name. No Canadian or Mexican would ever describe themselves as "American" and if they did, people would assumed they meant the States.

  • Well, I'm an Irish citizen. I cannot count how many times I have been mistakenly called a Briton, or heard the Republic Ireland wrongly being named as part of the UK. I have just come to terms with this ignorance. Factually speaking, yes, America is a continent. But what we wish to be called is another matter.

  • Well part of Ireland *is* in the UK (the part I come from, actually), so I can understand people being confused.

"The Americas" are actually *two* continents who've lost their name to the USA. Being a Canadian citizen, I wouldn't mind being called an American if it weren't for the fact that everyone would think I was from the US. It's the assumption that we don't like, not the term.

  • Well, that's that confusion sorted, then.

  • @SupaKawaiiTsumami if your irish your closer to the french than the british
