HEY MAN WTF IS THIS SHIT? JUSTIN BIEBER WROTE THIS SONG HEY JOE, I FUCKIUN HEARD IT LAST YEAR AT TEEN FEST AND IT KICKED FUKUN ASS YALL. DONT KNOW WHAT OR WHO THIS CIPPALINA IS. YO YO YO
There was only one...JC was the best, and I respect the rest...snakey and shakey..tingles me down to my toenails when he hits that vibrato...the closest thing to him is Syl sylvain or Miika Tenkula of Sentenced.
Incredibly, no one has mentioned that John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) provided the blazing guitar work. John C. was an amazing, largely unrecognized talent. Listen to the guitar work.
I'm Jo. I danced for various bands John played with from 1983 till 1987.The DInosaurs, Fish & Chips, Thunder 7 Lightning, Problem Child...I was thrilled to be able to blame Billy to his face for an entire life of being asked "hey Jo". My friend Dean just sent me this for my birthday tomorrow.
When I played drums for Billy in the mid 60's he did Hey Joe a little more folk-rock then this version. Billy doing his own show was a little more "bluesy-folk-rock". He also did some straight ahead folk balads. He also played great harmonica. Rik Elswit, who went on to Dr. Hook, played some guitar with Billy at that time. All in all, it was a great time to be playing music!
@sfdrummer68 didnt the surfaris record hey joe before the leaves? ken forsi was the bass player in the surfaris before love bryan mclean was a road manager for the byrds before love the whole first love album sounds like the same chords as hey joe so does soapstone mountain by its a beautiful day .
I played drums for Billy when he was kicking around SF and Marin. We had some fun nights at the "Inn of the Begining" in Rhonert Park. Billy was always greatful that Jimi was the first to give him writing credit for Hey Joe. Billy was also a very good blues harp player, I miss him much.
Soooo many memories!!!! My sister lived with John for four years back then and we all had some great times.. She is standing with John at their house in Mill Valley inside the Shady Grove album. John was a great guy as well as a great artist..He is missed!!!
This is kinda cool to find. When I lived in Mill Valley (with a previous member of Sir Doug's band) I used to see John & talk on the street in town a couple times a week. Always liked him...and the group, too. Dino was an excellent addition, I guess, but QM was what drew me initially to the sound, to be Paul (who is that Frank guy anyway? :-))
I met Nick Gravenites last month in Sonora's Blues Festival...nice guy with a lot of history to reveal to me and in his workshop. He has been their since the San Francisco Sixties started.
ok sound may not be great, content is great. Considering Hendrix took Randy California under his wing (as he always had to tell us when playing it live)for me I prefer this anyday.John Cipollina's guitar playing was very special in everyway.
I wonder if this is how he origionally played it, or if he, inspired by hendrix , altered how it was played to fit with the version everyone knew and loved already ?
i made a recording in edinburgh scotland when he was in scotland in the 60 s no he did not play it like this he was a "folk singer" one day i must get it on u tube

My favorite version of this song was by the Cryan' Shames. It really rocks and gets you charged up . Everybody check it out!

I miss Billy. I learned a whole lot from him. I also did a lot of the songs he wrote. He's still in Georgia, I think.

Anybody got a recording of Billy doing "Good God Have Mercy"? I like Roy Buchanan but never could stand either of his versions.

It's true most of the 60's SF players came out of the Bay-Area folk scene but John was Always ELECTRIC-He was amazing.

He also wrote some of Janis Joplin's tunes, he is a lucky man.

Billy Roberts wrote the song & Nick Gravenites is the speaker. The band was called "Thunder & Lightning" with John Cipollina.
