I've always felt Motown was at it's peak with the 4 Tops, especially the amazing voice and range of Levi Stubbs. This was music for young America, grouped in by some with "rock and roll", yet just look at these guys and listen - pure talent and class all the way! Thanks for posting!
I am a white kid that grew up in south central Los Angeles in the 60's and remember the angelic voices of Levi and Sam Cook, wish they were around today so our young people could be blessed as I was. Thank you Levi for touching my life with your wonderful voice.

Compare this to say a current Britney Spears hit such as "I Wanna Go". There is no comparison; One is music along with a story and the other is not. I'm not knocking Britney as she is a star and has handled her personal issues well and is doing great. It's great that the Motown stars, most who grew up in poor to middle class families became successful and lived the dream.
Levi, Levi, we still love you, what a song. And The intro Base , of " Lengendary James Jamerson, the base sound of Motown, gives me chills. Any one know who wrote this graet song??
American idol and all the UK similar shows are third rate entertainment for a generation who can't see beyond the dross they are served up. This song is a timeless classic by artists who mastered their craft, and musically the Funk Brothers were untouchable KTF
Why did they have them lip-synching to the FEMALE background vocals at 0:16? Even for back in those days, their talent management should have known better.
@Visionary0001 that's just how things were back then. You were lucky just to get on a show in the first place..The artist had almost no say in much of anything. Sometimes they didn't even get to pick what songs they would record. Most studios didn't have the equipment to allow the artist to perform live. Different world on a lot of levels back then, my friend.
to tell u the truth if Levi Stubbs was on American Idol he will lose. This generation would not appreciate a golden voice like this. This generation lost the scent of beauty.
@tonnyy06 If Levi was on American Idol, it would get canceled because after hearing him sing, no one would feel worthy of singing anymore on the American Idol stage.
@SunshineSuperman0999 if Levi was on Idol....Randy..."dude,it was a little pitchy for me" Simon" well,it was a little karioke, like someone singing on a cruise ship" ...then they'd make him sing something completely out of his comfort zone and trash him. As far as I'm concerned,he could've sung the phone book and I'd buy it.
The Tops where brilliant and did some memorable tunes, this is probably my favourite, its hard to believe they are all gone now but thank you lads and to Motown who opened up my eyes to the wonderful world of Soul music and Northern soul as we call it over in England, hope to meet you guys in the after life. This is one of the most amazing songs of the time, yet is all but forgotten . What a shame, yet I am thankful that you have posted it for those of us who love it, and have lived it!
I am a classical orchestra conductor who LOVES this song---- gorgeous harmonies, flawless, in-tune singing by the back-up trio, and fabulous singing from Levi Stubbs. His high "A" at 2:16 on the word "one" is so friggin' intense, it practically pulls you out of your chair. My late brother introduced me to this song about 20 years ago, and it's great to see the enthusiasm of so many for one of Motown's true masterpieces.
@theprotector5874 Some of us knew. Small transistor radios allowed us to have music everywhere, for the first time, all day and night. The feeling of community, "sharing" it was empowering. No one ever alone. Walter Cronkite showing our neighbor BOYS dieing in Vietnam, peace and rights demonstrations. Best, summer nights in ther park, lying on the dark side of a grassy hill, making out with my first love, with the music playing softely. Much has passed away; the music remains. Tnks UTube!
I can understand that person that said levi was sort of creepy he's not creepy but he does have a predator type quality as he scans the large gathering of people that have obviously come to hear HIM sing..I love it he scans like a chickenhawk,Hell,I would too!!!
Why are the muppetts dancing behhind Levi? Oh, sorry its the 60"s and there was no respect for true singers, my God, is there anybody than this man? I think not, RIP Levi, a true soul singer xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
@steel024 Couldn't agree more....the guitar intro before Levi Stubbs launches in sends chills down my spine......I keep playing this clip over and over.
They might not really be singing.. but the hand clapping's real.. and excellent !! Check out the chick in the lower right @ 1:00.. she backs up.. & does a double jump move back in.. Wicked.. !
these people DONT KNOW HOW TO CLAP OR WHEN TO CLAP. THE CLAPPING EFFED WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN GOOD AUDIO.
The Churches, still have the Spirits and Soul in them. They are just not for sale as cheaply, or as easy to be stole. So record companies reject it for cheaper rap.
What a wonderful record! The Tops had frustratingly found no success on records but then went to Motown and bingo, hit after hit after hit. This was hit #3, just a gorgeous piece of work. Today it sounds absolutely symphonic. Indeed, players from the Detroit Symphony did the instrumental tracks, and the Tops are backed by the Adantes and all the girl singers that could be lined up to do the backgrounds.
You won't see this anymore. The voices had their origin in Gospel Church choirs. They don't have the same spirituality as they did in the '50s and '60s
@Latz51 amen, You cant touch the voice of Levi, and these great compositions, Im Not sure who wrote This one Mabey Holland, Dozier, and Holland, They had so much talent from top to Bottom. but The tops were so great, I yearn for those days....
I still like the Journey song by the same name better, but these guys are such outstanding performers. This video is a real treasure! I'm looking forward to seeing your clean copy posted, if you come across it.
Magnificent. This is not just a classic, but a masterpiece. The type of song that comes along once in a life time and reaches down deep into your emotions. sung by great artists.
Levi truly had one of the best voices of all his contemporaries - or among any time period. Truly this is a song that needs to be remembered - I almost said covered but no one that I know of today can do it justice.
This is one of those songs that you don't hear for years and then it just plays in your head from out of nowhere over and over and you can't make it stop or stop the emotion it brings.
Agree 100% generationaluv: If those high notes Levi Stubbs hits so effortlessly DON'T send a chill up your spine, ...heck, your heart just ain't beatin'! What a true talent, one of the great male vocalists from those days, like Gene Pitney, Jay Black (aka David Blatt), Johnny Maestro, etc.
oceanbound222 its probably best if you stick to manufactured boy bands or the masses of talentless, witless chart bimbo's who are judged by their false looks and who have all the singing ability of a dead rat.
@oceanbound222 How in THE HELL could you say something about one of the greatest singers this country(USA) has EVER produced?!!! Levi Stubbs was a totally oriented family man with his priorities always in the correct direction and one hell of an accomplished and influential singer to boot. And yes I am white. NEVER judge a person by their looks, 9 times out of 10 you'll be the one to be made to look like a fool.
Was 10 years old when this song came out and remember falling in love with the Four Tops forever!! RIP Levi,Obie and Lawrence. God Bless and continue the legacy Duke!!!
Me,too!I could listen to Levi forever! I love those early clips of the Tops!!They were such true Motown professionals.Especially love this song. It will never get old.
Always my favorite by the Four Tops who so many other good songs too. This song is so powerful that it is not surprising to find others revealing heartache and troubles they have had. Cause this is one tough song to try and sit through and not get very emotional about.
just beautiful isn't it? the ticker/time so telling - nearly makes me cry the time goes by heading for the 50th decade since this recording? amazing- but human emotions never change. Peace.
tama motown! this whole setting showing how great artists and music was meant to be, watch this vid and tell me the world wouldnt be a better place with music like this today.
I love eveything about this song, Levis smooth as chocolate captivating voice, the backing vocals, and not forgetting the music itself......This, for me, has got to be the best motown song ever,
I had the immense privilege to see the Tops live four times in the UK in the early seventies. On each occasion they were brilliant with each song as sharp and clear as the recording. Oh and to the lass that puked on me at the performance in some club in Sheffield, I hope you learned to drink, pet.
@redrebel2007 You're not by yourself on that one!! I WISH I could go back in time to Detroit, Michigan when the Motor City was truly HITSVILLE/MOTOWN USA!! To recapture the wonderful times we had back then in the 50 & 60's are truly CHERISHED Memories!! The 20 Grand, APEX Lounge, Gene's High Chapporal, Phelps Lounge, Motown Revues!! I will NEVER forget!!
I always liked this record and felt it meant so much, earlier this year I had a near fatal motorcycle accident, the day I came out of hospital my wife told me she didn't love me anymore and was leaving me. I now know the true sentiment of this record and I find it so hard to listen too. Sorry.
Mrapricot56, hang in there my brother, it will get better for you!! Remember that this too shall past!! Remember that for every door that closes, an even bigger one will open up for you!!
@mrapricot56 I can honestly feel your pain, but you know what? If a woman could leave you at a time like that, then she truly wasn't the soulmate you're looking forl Chalk it up as a learning experience, and be on the lookout for the one who you are supposed to be with--'cause it wasn't her.
@mrapricot56 Oh man.....my heart goes out to you. Yes, you truly know the depths of the meaning of this song. But hang in there ok cuz your life is important and there will be somebody out there who will love you again and they will take that pain away. God bless you!!!
so hauntingly beautiful, happy, sad, melancolic but what memories of what was pure. god bless the supremes

Always my favorite by the Four Tops who so many other good songs too. This song is so powerful that it is not surprising to find others revealing heartache and troubles they have had. Cause this is one tough song to try and sit through and not get very emotional about.

Levi and the Tops, best voices out of Motown

just beautiful isn't it? the ticker/time so telling - nearly makes me cry the time goes by heading for the 50th decade since this recording? amazing- but human emotions never change. Peace.

I love eveything about this song, Levis smooth as chocolate captivating voice, the backing vocals, and not forgetting the music itself......This, for me, has got to be the best motown song ever,

I agree with tigerincanada. I saw them in Southport in the early 70s and they were faultless. I have never forgotten the experience.

I had the immense privilege to see the Tops live four times in the UK in the early seventies. On each occasion they were brilliant with each song as sharp and clear as the recording. Oh and to the lass that puked on me at the performance in some club in Sheffield, I hope you learned to drink, pet.

One of their best

Absolutely brilliant - I just wish Icould go back in time
redrebel2007 2 years ago
@redrebel2007 You're not by yourself on that one!! I WISH I could go back in time to Detroit, Michigan when the Motor City was truly HITSVILLE/MOTOWN USA!! To recapture the wonderful times we had back then in the 50 & 60's are truly CHERISHED Memories!! The 20 Grand, APEX Lounge, Gene's High Chapporal, Phelps Lounge, Motown Revues!! I will NEVER forget!!

Can't stop watching this video, simply the
greatest "live" performance the Tops ever
did. Just watch Levi's facial expressions
and hear Louvain Demps in the b-ground,
you can feel every emotion in their voices.
It gets no better than this.

The funny thing is, Levi could sing this song live just as well as it sounds on the 45. He never needed to lip-synch.

I always liked this record and felt it meant so much, earlier this year I had a near fatal motorcycle accident, the day I came out of hospital my wife told me she didn't love me anymore and was leaving me. I now know the true sentiment of this record and I find it so hard to listen too. Sorry.

I lost my beloved sister-this is a touchstone song. The lowest of low is represented. only the lonely.

@MistressOfMirth Sorry to hear of your terrible loss you have my sympathies, at least I am still here I should be grateful. Once again sorry.
mrapricot56 1 year ago
@mrapricot56 I can honestly feel your pain, but you know what? If a woman could leave you at a time like that, then she truly wasn't the soulmate you're looking forl Chalk it up as a learning experience, and be on the lookout for the one who you are supposed to be with--'cause it wasn't her.

@mrapricot56 - I'm so sorry. That was cold and inhuman. If you survived the crash, you can live through anything! Stay strong.
