  • so hauntingly beautiful, happy, sad, melancolic but what memories of what was pure. god bless the supremes

  • that takes me back

  • I've always felt Motown was at it's peak with the 4 Tops, especially the amazing voice and range of Levi Stubbs. This was music for young America, grouped in by some with "rock and roll", yet just look at these guys and listen - pure talent and class all the way! Thanks for posting!

  • best song ever

  • Forever timeless!

  • what happened to that great extended version someone made and put on here? these guys were the best!

  • It must be something in the water... or God must have stopped making good singers at around the end of the 70s.

  • I am a white kid that grew up in south central Los Angeles in the 60's and remember the angelic voices of Levi and Sam Cook, wish they were around today so our young people could be blessed as I was. Thank you Levi for touching my life with your wonderful voice.

  • @dirtyedna, well put !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OH I love the Four Tops and this song! But whz up wit da GOGO dancers..LOL

  • @rozcastillo One of 'em is Toni Basil and one is Teri Garr.

  • Thank goodness someone had the foresight to archive this recorded movie from teevee fifteen years prior to music videos.

Compare this to say a current Britney Spears hit such as "I Wanna Go". There is no comparison; One is music along with a story and the other is not. I'm not knocking Britney as she is a star and has handled her personal issues well and is doing great. It's great that the Motown stars, most who grew up in poor to middle class families became successful and lived the dream.

  • Levi, Levi, we still love you, what a song. And The intro Base , of " Lengendary James Jamerson, the base sound of Motown, gives me chills. Any one know who wrote this graet song??

  • When you lose love, especially through no fault of your own; It is an awfully lonely feeling.

  • These greats will never die as long as we keep them alive.

  • The negro race had the greatest singing voices in those days. What has happened to the music.and what is it we have today,It is not music

  • Amazing how things have changed since these guys, not only great but they dressed the part as well, simply wonderful.

  • @HauntedStudios sounds great!

  • The emotion in his voice just kills me! I have always and will always love this music. RIP Mr. Stubbs

  • Was there ever a more soulful voice than Levi? These guys are fantastic. I grew up on this music.

  • The Four Tops was alive and well in Motown, at the Arcadia and Fairview Garden Roller Skating Rinks.....We jammed to this.....those were the days...!

  • Coming out of every car radio, Belle Isle picnic, record store juke box, home hi-fi stereo, was the motown sound of the sweet four tops.

  • What happened to the extended version that was on here ? What boob removed that ? shame on you

  • Levi was - still is - THE voice of Motown and a generation of fans. His music legacy will live forever, God bless.

  • American idol and all the UK similar shows are third rate entertainment for a generation who can't see beyond the dross they are served up. This song is a timeless classic by artists who mastered their craft, and musically the Funk Brothers were untouchable KTF

  • Why did they have them lip-synching to the FEMALE background vocals at 0:16? Even for back in those days, their talent management should have known better.

  • @Visionary0001 that's just how things were back then. You were lucky just to get on a show in the first place..The artist had almost no say in much of anything. Sometimes they didn't even get to pick what songs they would record. Most studios didn't have the equipment to allow the artist to perform live. Different world on a lot of levels back then, my friend.

  • to tell u the truth if Levi Stubbs was on American Idol he will lose. This generation would not appreciate a golden voice like this. This generation lost the scent of beauty.

  • @tonnyy06 You are 100% correct.

  • @tonnyy06 If Levi was on American Idol, it would get canceled because after hearing him sing, no one would feel worthy of singing anymore on the American Idol stage.

  • @SunshineSuperman0999 if Levi was on Idol....Randy..."dude,it was a little pitchy for me" Simon" well,it was a little karioke, like someone singing on a cruise ship" ...then they'd make him sing something completely out of his comfort zone and trash him. As far as I'm concerned,he could've sung the phone book and I'd buy it.

  • @dirtyedna i agree.

  • God, I miss these guys! Has there ever been a more soulful singer than Levi?

  • God, I miss these guys!

  • The Tops where brilliant and did some memorable tunes, this is probably my favourite, its hard to believe they are all gone now but thank you lads and to Motown who opened up my eyes to the wonderful world of Soul music and Northern soul as we call it over in England, hope to meet you guys in the after life. God bless you

  • What a cool show Shivaree was....this magnificent black vocal group performing this stone classic song for these white kids who are loving every minute of it....what a great time that was in the history of our country.....the world was changing for the better.

  • man! if i had a voice like levi stubbs the whole universe would stand still! this man is what you call a singer ladies and gentleman, this is what you call a singer....

  • I love this song, thanks for posting, it brings back so many memories!

  • Just ask the lonely-in this song-they know the hurt n pain-but they will search again-

to take of love is a demanded repeat!

  • S.O.U.L. Period.

  • Timeless I grew up to this music. Todays music is junk lets go back to tha basics.

  • i totally agree with bgsotg goosebumps or what.

  • Buddy, if you don't get goose bumps on top of your goose bumps listening to Levi and the Tops on this Blusey one, your heart needs checking for a beat!!! Good God, what memories! Had these guys in either 63 or 64 for a high school dance, and OOOOOOOLALA, WHAT A SHOW! LONG LIVE THE TOPS AND LEVI STUBBS, MAN YOU WERE THE BEST, AND LONG LIVE MOTOWN!!!!

  • breightmet youth club bolton england i was playin this in 1975 on the clubs twin deck 36 yrs ago an still playin it now wow that says it all timeless miss you levi now you can sing to the angels an they will love it

  • is there a better song than this dont think so if there is you tell me spine tinglin dont you think

  • Just amazing. What a voice, Levi. Thanks for posting.

  • Just amazing. What a voice, Levi.

  • This is one of the most amazing songs of the time, yet is all but forgotten . What a shame, yet I am thankful that you have posted it for those of us who love it, and have lived it!

  • I am a classical orchestra conductor who LOVES this song---- gorgeous harmonies, flawless, in-tune singing by the back-up trio, and fabulous singing from Levi Stubbs. His high "A" at 2:16 on the word "one" is so friggin' intense, it practically pulls you out of your chair. My late brother introduced me to this song about 20 years ago, and it's great to see the enthusiasm of so many for one of Motown's true masterpieces.

    Thanks for posting!

  • xoxoxo

  • I bet all those kids in the backround never knew they were actually witnessing music history.......Man I wish I was there.........

  • @theprotector5874 Some of us knew. Small transistor radios allowed us to have music everywhere, for the first time, all day and night. The feeling of community, "sharing" it was empowering. No one ever alone. Walter Cronkite showing our neighbor BOYS dieing in Vietnam, peace and rights demonstrations. Best, summer nights in ther park, lying on the dark side of a grassy hill, making out with my first love, with the music playing softely. Much has passed away; the music remains. Tnks UTube!

  • Levi Stubbs had a great voice. Wished I could sing like that.

  • I can understand that person that said levi was sort of creepy he's not creepy but he does have a predator type quality as he scans the large gathering of people that have obviously come to hear HIM sing..I love it he scans like a chickenhawk,Hell,I would too!!!

  • badass!!! this is right up there with what be comes of the brokenhearted by j. ruffin I love MOTOWN!!!

  • badass!!!

  • When I saw this, I was thinking "omg Journey's a thief!" Then I continued listening and realized the 2 aren't the same song -__-

  • This cuts right to the heart. One of the best songs sung by one of the best groups ever!

  • he was a beautiful black man most of them are,til white men poison their hearts and for what,!they cant hurt a fly ,til

  • The best "Soul" song of all time

  • The best "Soul" song of all

  • Best "Soul" song of all time

  • They will tell you a story of sadness, a story hard to believe. I'm the loneliest one, ask me.

  • Why are the muppetts dancing behhind Levi? Oh, sorry its the 60"s and there was no respect for true singers, my God, is there anybody than this man? I think not, RIP Levi, a true soul singer xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • 1965 line dancing at Holy Cross - O'Hara, Bonner, and if we were lucky West Catholic Boys. Yea!

  • beautiful song...lives forever

  • @steel024 SONGS OF THE SIXTIES FROM MOTOWN WILL NEVER BE ATTAINED AGAIN

WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE THOSE MEMORIES TO CHERISH

  • @steel024 Couldn't agree more....the guitar intro before Levi Stubbs launches in sends chills down my spine......I keep playing this clip over and over.

  • Great Song!!! One of the best soul groups ever !!! mrapricot: sorry to hear your story. I do hope you are mending well both inside and out.

  • They might not really be singing.. but the hand clapping's real.. and excellent !! Check out the chick in the lower right @ 1:00.. she backs up.. & does a double jump move back in.. Wicked.. !

  • @flaude78 Righteous! Good catch my friend!

  • Listen to that applause! The kids just absolutely loved the Four Tops

  • these people DONT KNOW HOW TO CLAP OR WHEN TO CLAP. THE CLAPPING EFFED WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN GOOD AUDIO.

The Churches, still have the Spirits and Soul in them. They are just not for sale as cheaply, or as easy to be stole. So record companies reject it for cheaper rap.

  • R.I.P Levi Stubbs. American Idol and today's generation is just begging for a voice like yours to come steal the show.

  • @24Midnighttoker Great way to put it!

  • @24Midnighttoker i think thses handmen was the bomb they was sharp clean

  • Miming, but a superb song. Levi Stubbs has one of the very best voices ever.

  • The late great Levi Stubbs. I sooooooo miss this sweet soul.

  • Too bad almost everyone in this video is dead by now.

  • What a wonderful record! The Tops had frustratingly found no success on records but then went to Motown and bingo, hit after hit after hit. This was hit #3, just a gorgeous piece of work. Today it sounds absolutely symphonic. Indeed, players from the Detroit Symphony did the instrumental tracks, and the Tops are backed by the Adantes and all the girl singers that could be lined up to do the backgrounds.

  • The velvet tones of Levi Stubbs, one of my most favourite of theirs.x

  • I love this song, sung by the only one who could ever sing it,the Great Levi Stubbs! It's perfection!!

  • You won't see this anymore. The voices had their origin in Gospel Church choirs. They don't have the same spirituality as they did in the '50s and '60s

  • @Latz51 amen, You cant touch the voice of Levi, and these great compositions, Im Not sure who wrote This one Mabey Holland, Dozier, and Holland, They had so much talent from top to Bottom. but The tops were so great, I yearn for those days....

  • NAMASTE :) THANK YOU :)

  • If only these songs were in the charts today. These fantastic songs never date, motown will live forever.

  • I still like the Journey song by the same name better, but these guys are such outstanding performers. This video is a real treasure! I'm looking forward to seeing your clean copy posted, if you come across it.

  • Non-C I miss you

  • omg, this one of the best they ever did, can listen over and over and over, i'm hooked lol

  • Holy Christ! What a voice Mr. Stubbs had!!!!!!!!

  • my favourite Tops track

  • Magnificent. This is not just a classic, but a masterpiece. The type of song that comes along once in a life time and reaches down deep into your emotions. sung by great artists.

  • mrapricot56 I hope you are doing better now and maybe have found someone new to share your life with you

  • Levi truly had one of the best voices of all his contemporaries - or among any time period. Truly this is a song that needs to be remembered - I almost said covered but no one that I know of today can do it justice.

  • This is one of those songs that you don't hear for years and then it just plays in your head from out of nowhere over and over and you can't make it stop or stop the emotion it brings.

  • one of the truly forgotten great ballads sung by a master. Levi, we'll miss you !!!

  • Agree 100% generationaluv: If those high notes Levi Stubbs hits so effortlessly DON'T send a chill up your spine, ...heck, your heart just ain't beatin'! What a true talent, one of the great male vocalists from those days, like Gene Pitney, Jay Black (aka David Blatt), Johnny Maestro, etc.

  • Chills! God what happended with today's music!?!?!?!

  • hey mrapicot56 keep you head up just remember if it dont work out then God has someone better instored for you

  • oceanbound222 its probably best if you stick to manufactured boy bands or the masses of talentless, witless chart bimbo's who are judged by their false looks and who have all the singing ability of a dead rat.

  • Such a fine looking man, and a beautiful voice, just beautiful

  • Fine looking man. Beautiful, beautiful voice

  • I think the lead singer is ugly/creepy, sorry to say this

  • @oceanbound222 How in THE HELL could you say something about one of the greatest singers this country(USA) has EVER produced?!!! Levi Stubbs was a totally oriented family man with his priorities always in the correct direction and one hell of an accomplished and influential singer to boot. And yes I am white. NEVER judge a person by their looks, 9 times out of 10 you'll be the one to be made to look like a fool.

  • I'm a guy and I think he's incredibly handsome.

  • My favourite by The Tops

  • Hey, young people. Unlike today's disposable (music?),

    THIS is lasting.

    THIS is class.

    THIS is singing.

THIS ... is how it's done.

  • awesome song, beautiful voice, great love song, kudos all around

  • duuuuude, thats selfish! tell her karma will prevail, dont let her taint this beautiful song

  • Was 10 years old when this song came out and remember falling in love with the Four Tops forever!! RIP Levi,Obie and Lawrence. God Bless and continue the legacy Duke!!!

  • PURE CLASS... GRAHAM UK

  • R.I.P Ollie Woodson.Thank You for the great memories.

  • good tymes listening to this song wit marisol...levi knows how to put music and feelings together..r.i.p. LEVI

  • Me,too!I could listen to Levi forever! I love those early clips of the Tops!!They were such true Motown professionals.Especially love this song. It will never get old.

  • RIP, Levi...

  • 100 proof aged in soul !!!!!!!!!

    virgin priced

  • Love this piece so much in the words like we did in the days.We love some and we keep our heads up high and keep going on.

  • Who wrote this? I don't think it was Holland-Dozier-Holland and I can't find it..

Who wrote this story of sadness a song too hard to believe..

  • @11xzxzxz William Stevenson / Ivy Jo Hunter wrote it.

  • @cobbywebbo Thanks a lot for info

  • @11xzxzxz

    it was Stevenson, Hunter

  • @epitrochlearis Thanks very much.

  • Maybe my favorite Four Tops Song. Don't believe me, well Just Ask the Lonely!

  • THX!

  • This song makes me feel that I can't make it alone . Bye Cruel World.

  • Always my favorite by the Four Tops who so many other good songs too. This song is so powerful that it is not surprising to find others revealing heartache and troubles they have had. Cause this is one tough song to try and sit through and not get very emotional about.

  • Levi and the Tops, best voices out of Motown

  • @daveydee1142

just beautiful isn't it? the ticker/time so telling - nearly makes me cry the time goes by heading for the 50th decade since this recording? amazing- but human emotions never change. Peace.

  • Motown! Professional all the way!

  • Levi Stubbs ..the voice of the 60s. Legend!!

  • tama motown! this whole setting showing how great artists and music was meant to be, watch this vid and tell me the world wouldnt be a better place with music like this today.

  • "Remember no one is big enough to go it alone"

  • I love eveything about this song, Levis smooth as chocolate captivating voice, the backing vocals, and not forgetting the music itself......This, for me, has got to be the best motown song ever,

  • Agreed!

  • Split up with my girlfriend tonight that did,nt make my cry, but this track did, levi will live on forever

  • Comment removed

  • thats LEVI boys !!!!!!!!!!!

  • xoxoxx 4 tops

  • Bloody hell! The four tops are awesome. I went to the Motown 50 concert last night and it was the best concert i have seen. AWESOME!! :-)

  • I agree with tigerincanada. I saw them in Southport in the early 70s and they were faultless. I have never forgotten the experience.

  • tops .. supremes... soul brother or sister? Please say hello. ktf and uttt (the tigers). Best wishes

  • Love it love it ....

  • I had the immense privilege to see the Tops live four times in the UK in the early seventies. On each occasion they were brilliant with each song as sharp and clear as the recording. Oh and to the lass that puked on me at the performance in some club in Sheffield, I hope you learned to drink, pet.

  • One of their best

  • Absolutely brilliant - I just wish Icould go back in time

  • @redrebel2007 You're not by yourself on that one!! I WISH I could go back in time to Detroit, Michigan when the Motor City was truly HITSVILLE/MOTOWN USA!! To recapture the wonderful times we had back then in the 50 & 60's are truly CHERISHED Memories!! The 20 Grand, APEX Lounge, Gene's High Chapporal, Phelps Lounge, Motown Revues!! I will NEVER forget!!

  • Can't stop watching this video, simply the

greatest "live" performance the Tops ever

did. Just watch Levi's facial expressions

and hear Louvain Demps in the b-ground,

you can feel every emotion in their voices.

It gets no better than this.

  • listening to this song now with tears streaming down my face and I'm a 52 year old bloke, some wounds never heal do they ?

  • @tiger21hat No they sure don't.:(

  • painfully beautiful

  • The funny thing is, Levi could sing this song live just as well as it sounds on the 45. He never needed to lip-synch.

  • I always liked this record and felt it meant so much, earlier this year I had a near fatal motorcycle accident, the day I came out of hospital my wife told me she didn't love me anymore and was leaving me. I now know the true sentiment of this record and I find it so hard to listen too. Sorry.

  • @mrapricot56 Terrible story that mate, I hope you're OK now. Sounds like you are better off out of it though.

  • onwards and upwards eh

  • @mrapricot56

Mrapricot56, hang in there my brother, it will get better for you!! Remember that this too shall past!! Remember that for every door that closes, an even bigger one will open up for you!!

  • @mrapricot56

I lost my beloved sister-this is a touchstone song. The lowest of low is represented. only the lonely.

  • @MistressOfMirth Sorry to hear of your terrible loss you have my sympathies, at least I am still here I should be grateful. Once again sorry.

  • @mrapricot56 I can honestly feel your pain, but you know what? If a woman could leave you at a time like that, then she truly wasn't the soulmate you're looking forl Chalk it up as a learning experience, and be on the lookout for the one who you are supposed to be with--'cause it wasn't her.

  • @mrapricot56 - I'm so sorry. That was cold and inhuman. If you survived the crash, you can live through anything! Stay strong.

  • @mrapricot56 SORRY TO HEAR THAT I HAD TOLD SOME ONE THE SAME LINE , I REGRET SAYING IT TO THIS DAY. I HOPE THING GET BETTER FOR YOU ..

  • @mrapricot56 I'm so sorry!

  • @mrapricot56 STAY STRONG BROTHER I READ YOUR STORY A FEW MONTH'S AGO BUT HOLD ON ..YOU BE ALRIGHT ...

  • @mrapricot56 Oh my gosh, what a time to hear that sad news. So sorry.

  • @mrapricot56 thats sad & my 1st husband did the exact thing almost.

  • @mrapricot56 Oh man.....my heart goes out to you. Yes, you truly know the depths of the meaning of this song. But hang in there ok cuz your life is important and there will be somebody out there who will love you again and they will take that pain away. God bless you!!!

  • Levi and Jackie Wilson were cousins, just imagine those family sing-a-longs!

  • hes got such a smooth sounding voice

  • Some people can't clap in the crowd

  • Just Fantastic

  • Excellent !!!

  • Love it. Love it. Love it. Listen over, and over, and over. I love his voice.

  • @MsBrendakaye yeah, it don't get better than levi-he was the best

  • Tops from the Tops =} Xlnt Post

  • Very Nice....thanks for the share...

  • You are all right---what happened to those days?

  • MrHotrodjones, You are so correct! Today's groups can't hold a candle to these great guys! And, where is the 'class' now?? Desperately missing!

  • I love this song! the four tops were GREAT!! R.I.P. Stubbs we will miss him!Todays groups will never match any like those back then CLASS!l
