Actually I think they were having fun and I like the druggy arrangement of these songs. The drummer is so dorky but plays well. These guys are a great rock band. Never heard a song I didn't like, and these guys are plain living legends, true Indie Rock at it's best. You don't like them? Fuck, you don't like rock n roll, I guess.
I'd like to go cop heroin with Anton, have him help me find a vein in my neck cuz my others are all shot out, and jam with him. Or else just listen to him play his songs thru a pignose amp in my room.
the greatest most perfect magical healing groove candy happy love float vibe rock song ever made ... this is elevator music when you push H for Heaven ... this is doctor's office music if your doctor is dr. Jesus H. Gandhi. you can fuss and resist or you can join the servo train to bliss and transcendancy ... this is when writing melodies matter ... the guitar strings of electric angels. dig baby
@ProspectHammer Remember, there's four bloody guitars here! Furthermore, on the lick, it looks like the twelve string is following Anton quite closely, probably playing the identical thing. So, in terms of effects, there's chorus (or better yet, studio double tracking), a harmonizer, and maybe delay going on. And they're probably using some degree of actual (spring) reverb from their amps.
@ProspectHammer plus the fact that ricky plays the riff as well.. they have unique sound simply because there four guitars playing along.. 5 with matt.. its pretty cool..
Well the 1960s Vox Ultrasonic has in-built effects including fuzz and treble boost. The fender amp will have tremolo and reverb. I've seen Anton use a single stompbox live - a Boss overdrive (dunno the model but I'd speculate a Boss SD1). I think Freddie and Ricky have several pedals in their live set-up (c. 2008).
The BJM play "Servo" at the end because, as the most perfect psychedelic rock song experience ever, it would be reckless to play it anywhere else. The earth has bounds on how high you can be and if you are that high early in a BJM show, the other songs will explode your mind, irrevocably. My God. This song is Jesus riding a unicorn made of LSD.
hahah i love anton's look at about 1:00 minute mark.. he is like "you better play this right or else".. anyways i really like this performance, especially how he talked to some random person leaving the gig in the beggining
can anyone tell me if there is someplace to download this whole show? I really just want to lie back and enjoy this whole show front to back without interruption - wish I was there
@amnhendrickson Vox Ultrasonic or something like that. I'm pretty sure they haven't made any of those for like 40 years though haha. However you can still find them, usually in smaller music stores. They run about 3000+ dollars but they have a sound almost no other guitar can touch.
I just don't get it with these guys. What is the big deal? I've seen them live and it was a joke. Anton cares more about being a badass than playing well. The songs are just all boring major stuff nothing new or really that interesting at all.
@alex888brain If you are trying to intellectualize Rock music you are missing the point. I bet you know all the different "Modes" my first guitar teacher told me anyone who talks about modes in rock music doesn't know how to play and he has several Grammy awards.
@tedesco455 You couldn't be more wrong. I taught myself to play guitar and drums and can't read charts. My favourite thing to do is get stoned and jam like these guys. I just don't get why they're so idolized. This performance lacks energy and creativity.
@alex888brain - What's wrong now? Did I urinate on your rug? When are you going to upload a song for us all to watch? Can't wait to see how awesome it is. I bet you've got webbed feet, but that's ok.
@alex888brain If you saw the whole concert you'd know Anton had problems with his guitars the whole show..I think he went through 3 guitars. If you knew anything you'd understand that when things go wrong technically it's kinda tough to have a flawless show you dope!
Every musician fucks up a song one time or another... other then that great performance. And to all of you elitist types out there that sweep pick out the ass... fuck you.
@turbotrauma I wish he'd quit smoking. I once told him I'd go off Doritos if he'd quit cigarettes. He "just ha'd", oh well. I quit 22 yrs ago so I offered to help him for just $29.99, a virtual bargain. Joking, I would gladly help anyone if possible.
Don't break it down, just be fucking grateful, if it weren't for Brian Jonestown Massacre, there'd be no Brian Jonestown Massacre! There is no imitation that even comes close. Art isnt jumping through a fucking hoop, this song is not just dancable, groovable or moveable it is psychedelic, it pulls you inward as you reach nirvana, BJM is the fucking word of gospel. Im just getting into this band now, but I can tell you, as much as I love Radiohead, or anyone else, this is like my religion.
Yes, Anton's compositions for the rhythmic guitar are simple, but it has never been a problem for me. Who, except a genius can make songs like this with 3 chords? Bjm' complexity comes from lead guitar, other instruments like organ and the complex drum's rhythm!
poor cygnus212x. It's pretty obvious he doesn't understand what the art is about. If music were about playing lots of chords, progressions and scales, Joey Satriani would be the king and he wasn't playing covers. It's funny when people thinks that making fun of anybody else makes them better, but they're still rubbish. THANK GOD FOR MAKE THEM CRAP.
If you don't get it now, you never will. Enjoy your music and we'll enjoy this. I personally don't think the song needs any more complexity. There are variations on the chords, 4 guitarists, Organ, solos, lead parts hmm...sure they are centered around 4 chords but it is swiming in melody, beautiful melody
yeah man, songs aren't about how technical you can make em anyway. This thing has a great flow to it, a nice catchy lead guitar just like "Vacuum boots" and so many others. I would hope no one listened to music solely based on how hard it is to play anyway, rather than how good it sounds in general. :)
well, maybe. i just think it's about how it makes me feel. i don't care how easy the song is to play. it's about the emotions it evokes. who cares how many chords are in the song? it sounds wonderful.
Hey you didn't come up with any fucking chords. I also don't see you with a dvd, a song, a youtube page, a movie or any fucking fans or even jack shit so shut the fuck up!!
You obviously have been playing for maybe 4 months. The majority of good songs out there (especially with classic rock) are predominately played with three or less chords. Good work at looking like an idiot to anyone who knows anything about music and an asshole to anyone who doesn't.
I like when a song takes me somewhere. There's a change up to the pattern, a build-up, some dynamics and then the classic riff kicks in and it feels like a cohesive composition. Not saying everything should fit a formula, but it's not terribly difficult to create a looping riff.
When I'm jamming with someone, playing something that predictable offers some cool opportunities to play leads over it (and they do that well), but
it just goes on and on to the point that the song only stops because they've run out of ideas.
I like some repetitious music, The Melvins can be painstakingly droning at times, but there's a reward for enduring songs like Boris or the opening to Lysol.
I'm sorry I offended your niche fanboyism, I certainly like some less than popular stuff that is hard to describe why I enjoy it. This just doesn't sound very inspired (unless I should take up Heroin?). It feels like wallpaper.
That's arguable. Give it back is an incredible album but my favourite is Their Satanic Majesties Second Request. Put the record on, roll, inhale, relax and begin a wonderful journey.
it's a hard to decide which is the best one, their satanic majesties second request, take it from the man or give it back, I can add thanks god for metal illness haha. there's sth I'm sure the best era was before 00'
