brings back memories of walking the streets of NYC on a new yrs day at dawn with a girl from the Bronx I met in Times Square,, watching the sunrise over the 59th St bridge
This is Bruce at the peak of his powers. Just compare this street story with the overblown somewhat banal lyrics of Jungleland, which was always overrated IMO. After this album, he became a star, but some of the artistry eroded away, alas.
Incredible song with Suki on the violin makes it awesome...who knew, a 26 year old Springsteen would pull off a live performance like this. The entire show is incredible including the 20 minute version of New York City Serenade
Just saw Bruce in Pittsburgh last week for a special event. He performed this on acoustic for the first time 36 years after this version. You could hear a pin drop at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall during his perofmance. No different than this version. Its still timeless, haunting, and quite frankly a chilling. I feel like I know Spanish Johnny and Puertican Jane . Only Bruce can accomplish this sort of thing. My God!
I always had the memory of hearing this live 10/11/74 (yes, I kept the ticket stub) at Shady Grove, Md, but this stunned me, bringing it all back home in an emotional way I rarely feel anymore. Thanks.
Bruce played the Naval Academy twice in one year (77-78). He was, of course, awesome. I had graduated from the high school that served the Main Point (Radnor) so I knew about Bruce. One of my bros from the track team flipped pizzas right near the MP. I learned how to flip pizzas and saw Bruce in the same year. Sweet.
Springsteen had some awsome powers of observation to have written this song at age 23 or so. The music is the canvas and the lyrics are the brushstrokes that paint the picture. Tom Waits, Dylan, and Woody Guthrie could do this. Maybe a handfull of others as well. This may well be considered his masterpeice one day.
I am a huge Springsteen fan. My College Roommate, who was from New Jersey, at University of Michigan turned me on in 1980. I have been groovin on so much Bruce over the last few months and just rediscovered 'Incident on 57th Street' with my Clarence Clemmons mourning songs.
Sparse background to Bruce's Whiskey Voice.
She knew he never be true but she didn't mind.
Those Romantic Young Boys, all they want to do is fight.
@CRS9YT You're right. I discovered Bruce, summer, 78 and listened to almost nothing but BtR and Darkness for several months before seeing him on back-to-back nights at the Fox in Atlanta on 9/30 and 10/1/78. Somehow missed how great Incident is. I think this version, the last time he would play it for 19 years is pretty great: youtube.com/watch?v=2TV7hNxXobw&feature=related, as is this one at the LA Reunion show on 10/23/99 - full band, I mean really FULL band, which is here, too.
Ok, am I the only one that is almost brought to tears by this most excellent and haunting version? There is so much raw emotion, images of years gone by and a feeling of moving through life too fast. I was floored when I pulled this up and listened to it. When those violin strings are being played I feel as if they are tied to every emotion in my body. Thanks Bruce...this is what music is supposed to do to us.
This period when Suki Lahav was with the E Street band was a golden time my friends, a fuckin golden time, RIP Big Man and thank you Bruce for keeping this band together and giving us more and more shows again. The E street will never die, never,
Odds are pretty darn good that I was sitting in the Main Point while this was being recorded. I didn't miss too many of these... thanks for the flashback to an awesome chance to sit in the presence of such legends in the making.... goosebumps.... And RIP Big Man... you are, and will be missed. I am not sure how Bruce will be able to be Bruce without you...
Bruce at his most Romantic. In a few months he would focus on trying to make the greatest rock album of all time (and succeed) but he lost a little something, that he never would recapture, a bit of innocence that gives this song such a beautiful elegiac feel
One of the most moving and poiniet performances in the history of Bruce Springsteen, WMMR and frankly, all of rock music. Nothing has ever been more pure and innocent than this performance at this point in time. I will take this with me for ever!
One of the best storytellers of our time. But outside of the violins i don't care for any versions on youtube, def like the album version the best, esp. how it leads into Rosalita-
Therre is one person to tell that this song is'nt a mixture of feelings like love, the feeling experienced by people knowing they have no chance ... But the dreams remain at heart ... This one person is unresponsive, it joined the cowardice and stupidity ...And think that I get angry at people like that ...
drugs, prostitution, violence, poverty, romance, heartbreak ..... people tryin desperately to make it through this life alive... bruce captures it all in this 9 minutes of ecstasy... this song is a window to my soul!
crazy cat records has bootleg of this show; titled "Live At The Main Point" Bryn Mawr, PA. 2/5/75...great version of NYC Serenade...19 mins long...sorry it's Great Dane Records from Milan, Italy.
I fell years ago into a total fascination and admiration with Bruce Springsteen, thought I know this best songs but I just discovered this one and I'm just without words. Every song he made is sublime. That's incredible. The Boss, yes. Thank you for posting this amazing song...
@Milanzar You're right. This is the most amazing song. It is great played slowly, almost acoustically, and even better as a full band rocker. And everything in between.
He wrote this for his second album, The Wild, the Innocent, and E-Street Shuffle, release in September, 1973, shortly before turning 24. He wrote this at 23. How is this possible. He might as well be channeling God.
Indeed, how can this be writen by a 23 old kid? Just one of his most legendary songs for sure, just love the outro of this song. So beautifull in my eyes, just something that cannot be described by words, period.
There was a fire house right across the street from the Main Point. Their siren was well known for going off during performances all the time. If you went to the Point enough times you just took it for granted. Does this "police siren" appear on any other Springsteen tapes from this period?
@harvey1954 Contrary to myth, the police siren heard at the end is an audio prop that had been utilized at a few of the band's shows just prior to this one.
@johnny576375 my guess bruce and the band used the prop to indicate that Johnny has been caugh by the police....similar to the album version where the piano at the end of the song kinda shows Jane playing a little music box waiting for Johnny....great version...cheers for posting
Amazingly, he put Incident on the shelf for 19 years. He played it at the Nassau Coliseum on December 29, 1980 and didn't play it again live until September 25, 1999, when he opened with it in Philadelphia.
This is utterly beautiful. There is no music like this today This is what we risk losing in humanity if we allow technlogy to make us lazy, this right here.
23 year old guy w/ not much education is not only wrote this masterpiece...but has a catalog hundreds deep w/ this type of quality material...miraculous...how did this happen?...what a gift...and he didn't waste one ounce of that gift...not for a second.
"Spanish Johnny drove in from the underworld last night
With bruised arms and broken rhythm in a beat-up old Buick
But dressed just like dynamite"...it's like a movie in three lines...amazing depth.
My favourite Bruce song - if I dont listen to it for a while , I ll stick it on and every time my eyes fill up- theres something in this song very very special.
for those that go back to the beginning, there's nothing like this. with maybe the exception of the bottom line concerts, the ultimate. raw, fresh, soulful, burning...bruce at his best.
@showme1moresign I've long thought that heaven would be Bruce every night, but different tours, and college football every day. Might and to put some sex in there, too. I'd relive my first date with my wife (my current one, God, if you're setting this up).
Ya know Bruce played incident on 12/27/80 and not again until 9/25/99. Who else could have a song this good and put it on the shelf for 19 years?
Or even write this at 22? Hey God, how come he was given so much genius and me so little?
So beautiful.... I was not even born but Bruce´s music has always been with me in good times and bad times... This is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes.... I think any Bruce fan knows what I am talking about.... Sadly I have never heard him play this song on any of the 9 conserts I´ve seen here in sweden
A GREAT, crystal-clear version of a classic boot of one of the best Bruce songs ever, in a legendary performance. I can only bow down to you for posting this. This is what YouTube is for. Yeah? I thank you.
amazing...the idea that he was approx. 23 or 24 when he was writing and performing this is crazy to me...as famous and popular as he is...I still find him to be highly underrated...one of those rare performers that is so great that you have to "get him"...it's not for everyone...but if you do "get it" you know what i mean.
my roommate at Union College had this in 1978 and i haven't heard it since. absolutely unbelievable performance. born to run wasn't out yet even. brings tears to my eyes. god i miss his old stuff....his new stuff.....no thanks. but god bless ya Bruce
The problem with this version is that it is so good I don't think I'll ever enjoy any other song ever again, lol. Many thanks for posting. Greetings from Wales
The general public can text vote there stupid opinions to American Idol and listen to shit generic music, I'll take this anyday. Just downright beautiful.
@rloebe34 don't hate on idol, it has produced some good artists. its not anyone's fault that nothing can compare to the musical and lyrical perfection that this song attains.
hey Johnny, this is a real great song. I´m still wondering about Bruce - so many versions he made, every one is new - and the song stays: GREAT. Thanks again
And I listening to it that night! And recorded it on my tape machine. And the signal wasn't coming in well from Philly so half my recording is in mono and the other half is in stereo. God, what GREAT memories!
He used the siren at a few shows around then. First known appearance was 29/11/74. Check out the link in the video info to download shows where he uses it.
Yes this is so an emotionel song, this is music, this is life man.....!
There is only one god.... his name is god (for me!).

WMMR radio in Philadelphia on February 5th.
johnny576375 3 years ago
And I listening to it that night! And recorded it on my tape machine. And the signal wasn't coming in well from Philly so half my recording is in mono and the other half is in stereo. God, what GREAT memories!

He used the siren at a few shows around then. First known appearance was 29/11/74. Check out the link in the video info to download shows where he uses it.
