I saw this production at the Royal Opera House. The wonderful music and potentially wonderful singing were hindered, as it were, by this awful production. How is it possible for a singer to express themselves emotionally if they are only allowed to move in a certain, limited manner? By the judgement scene with Amneris alone on stage, Antonio Pappano was flaying his arms about indicating to the mezzo that she should stop acting in this static way ;)
