I really really love this tone chunky and fat but i just noticed that gets buried in the mix with the other instruments like Rex from Pantera... anyway..! it's nice isn't it?
@californiadude98 I really think cliff would do more complicated things and not follow the guitars so much..just listen to bass tracks from fight fire with fire or battery (both thrash songs too) and you will understand what I am saying..but this bassline is good too
I got this from the Guitar Hero games, so it is the master. I don't know why you can still hear the other instruments though and I'm pretty sure it'd be hard to separate individual instruments like this in Audacity or any other audio program
As for why you can hear the other instruments, it might have something to do with the controversial way Death Magnetic was produced/mixed. I'm no expert; just a guess.
@darkragnarok21 maybe they played the song through monitors instead of headphones when tracking the bass, and the mics then picked up those noises as well? just a theory
@darkragnarok21 yea like i said, just a theory, best i can come up with, i like how dude thinks you can just choose instruments and turn them down haha once a song is mixed there is no possible way to seperate the tracks lol
@darkragnarok21 Audacity, no one program, can separate tracks. I use audacity, ardour, garageband, logic pro... and you cant change volume at what you want. Only with a program like ardour/garageband if you have the tracks separated. I know what I say
@PSiCKoGiZMo People have separated tracks though other means but it's not perfectly isolated or isolated all tracks. To get files like the bass tracks you do have to have the master tracks. And yes there is no way for a normal person to separate the tracks which is what I stated before.
@KingTwili Regardless of your ignorance towards how he actually achieved the bass track, even if he had turned the volume on the other instruments down, it would still count as the bass master track.
I use some kind of special strings and I keep up the gain. I also use 5 stringer and use a solid bass. Don't use fender, I would prefer LTD or Yamaha for the best sound
umm CircuFronja.....STFU.....Rob is a fucking amazing bassist and you should be hatin him just becuz hes not cliff.....BUT im not saying that i hate cliff....cliff would most likely still be with metallica if they never had that accident...
why don'you see the intro of cliff in for whom the bell tolls live on cliff 'em all and the solo of this fake bassist...he doesn't have the sense of time and he have to take the time with picking 4/4...the effects don't make the bass player...
ohhh poor dude, did u whore girlfriend left you and now u hate the world? u will never ever be, a little part of what ROBERT TRUJILLO (REAL METAL BASS PLAYER) is, so get a life poser

You my friend are a really good eye in bassists, Robert Trujillo is the sound of Metallica, Jason newsted is a shit compared to Trujillo, very good my friend, perfect, all my support to you.
I'll give Jason the nod when it comes to backing vocals, but Trujillo's stage presence is better. It's awesome watching him run around the stage and get that look on his face on the crazy bass parts. Metallica needs to turn their bass higher and drums lower.
Jason had more stage presence than Trujillo... Trujillo still kicks ass though. I agree with you on the mixing though... Metallica have always had the bass volume incredibly low, and even though fanboys will deny it, even on the Cliff albums, the bass was still disgracefully quiet
You what? Go and listen to Rob's bass playing in Suicidal Tendencies, and then come back and call him a ''fake bassist''. And if you do that, and still say that, you either need a hearing aid, or know NOTHING about good music, or bass playing!
why couldnt i hear this awesome line on the damn album

Ah, I love this. Sure, the bass follows the guitars around (or do the treble guitars follow the bass?! The mind boggles!), but it still sounds great.
Histpolsci 2 years ago
The boss ODB3 is great for this kind of sound.
1st get a nice punchy bass sound ( lots of treble, new strings too would help)
2nd add the Boss ODB-3
Level- 12 o'clock
Bass - 4 o'clock
Treble - 1 o'clock
Balance - 9 o'clock
Gain - 8 o'clock ( A tiny tiny amount)
That gets you Robs sound!!!
