@DDRK9 Thank you! Finally someone with a wise answer... The pedigree aspect is the element that hurts, you see we have dogs like that but they have military papers that are not approved by FCI and such.
I also commented that I have a young upcoming East German male that is going to be saddleback blk-tan like his mother Lambada vom Steinbusch. Of course most of the blk-tan lines do go back to blk "WGR" dogs. But we all have to remember that prior to the construction of the Berlin Wall, there was only one registry. The DDR registry only began in the early 1960's, and ceased to exist less than 30 years later. 30 years can be as little as 3 generations! So you really can see any color or type!
while blk/ tan (saddleback pattern) is relatively rare in DDR dogs, it's not unheard of. Look at Uncas v Poppitz, Leon and Yasko v Konigswaldereck, Yros v Kosterseck.. Only PEDIGREE proves DDR or not!

Hi< I am afraid I accidentally deleted your post, I would be glad if you post it again, it was a wise message to have on. My intention was to remove one of my own posts.
You don't know what you are talking about. There is no way that this is a DDR type. His body structure and pigment is very different. I would say he is an old style showline type dog. Beautiful dog, but not DDR. DDR are dogs like Troll von Haschbrusen, VIto Vom Waldwinkel, Bosco Von Der Hagenmule, Max Van Tiekerhook. Do some more research.
@Chunklake I do know what I am talking about and the dog's papers back my words up, but obviously that goes beyond your "reach". The dog names you are mentioning are WEST dogs, though you call them "DDR type" (..?) I think you need to do some research yourself... especially before launching in a debate like this.
Aw man. I just love the DDR bloodlines. As a kid, we had 3 GSD's from the old bloodlines(you know, the ones that were bred before they evolved into show lines and working lines). I miss those 3 very much. :'( Looking to get a DDR or Czech GSD in the future.
@MrRbn5 The DDR are somewhat less in drive (what you see on the sport field) but they have very good fight and defense drive. Also they are considerably stronger then the west dogs, as far as anatomy goes. I strongly believe the DDR dogs are closer to the "old type" of a GS dog.
@MrRbn5 The difference is tempermament, primarily. The DDR dogs have about 80% defense and 20% prey drive. The sport of Schutzhund requires about 85% prey drive and maybe 15% defensive drive. So the West German sport dogs "play at the game" of Schutzhund. But in a real life encounter with an adversary, these bite trained dogs don't recognize the game and may not bite for real when called for. The DDR dogs have more natural built-in aggression and don't treat it as a game, but as serious work
that is also why we did not get closer to videotape the dog, he meant business. Sometimes you can see dogs doing sleeve work and you can tell they're not that good for "real"; but sometimes it is enough to see just the reaction of the dog to tell its strength. You can do protection (sleeve) work with a less good dog, because of good training - but that does not make it a good dog.
Offcourse this might not show much, but there's a lot of difference between 99,9 % of the 'guarddogs' and this shepherddog.
I train for more then 15 years with policedogs and i own 3 DDR shepherddogs and i can tell you one thing: if the cameraman would step into the territory of this dog he definitely will attack you..
Yes the video does not show much, but you should see the dog in real life. He is very impressive both as far as attitude and looks. He gained somewhat weight because he is not doing much exercise these days. He served as a military service dog.
The dog is being defencive behind a fence as most dogs are...even Chihuauas. This doesn't show that it is "Old Style DDR" Show it actually doing protection work and that might be a bit more interesting. Plus the dog is overweight and gets tired after barking and running a bit.Very sad it isn't in better shape.
Nice strong dog.......

@MrRbn5 also, they have a much straighter back compared to the show-breeds. that has both visual n physical advantages.
