Dear Jeff, I appreciate your influence on music and your inimitable guitar playing style. I also appreciate the fact that you have taken time to pay tribute to Brian Wilson in this unique and reigned in fashion. However, and forgive me for being blunt, but please could you find it in your heart to PUT SOME FUCKING LONG SLEEVES ON FOR ONCE. Its like they've grafted Ronnie Woods turkey wottle face flaps on to your arms..
This is a clip taken from the wonderful DVD recorded 11th Feb 2005, of the "MusiCares 2005 Person of the Year - Brian Wilson - A Tribute". A must-get for any serious BW fan (Amazon.com). This clip featuring Jeff Beck is truly one of the A1 Best-Picks, out of the whole array of fabulous artists featured on the DVD. PS - fans should also get a hold of the double box-set DVD entitled "Brian Wilson - Songwriter, 1962-1969" (also from Amazon.com). These are 2 very worthwhile collectors items.
Well, these are the touring band of Brian Wilson, The Wondermints. They are just doing the backing vocals while Jeff is imitating Brian Wilson's lead vocals.
Don't even try bro. I'm a greater BW fan than you could ever hope to be. I have a picture of him on my door that I look at every morning before I start my day.
Those backup singers are too 'trained'. Who wants to hear a perfectly trained voice? I may as well go listen to Beyonce or some American Idol ass hole...
@gdoddmeta3608 "Those backup singers are too 'trained'." What the hell is wrong with you, other than your reverence for BW as a god? I LOVE The Beach Boys, but NO musician merits adulation like that. Gazing at a photo of Brian every morning? Wow. Anyway, these singers are what made me really take notice here, not so much Beck. He's great, but I don't start my day by adoring his picture. These vocals are mystical -- thoroughly in accord with trademark BW perfectionism. Surf's Up!
This is very strange, not bad though. Nice warm tones from Jeff who seems to play with fair accuracy. There wasn't much room for improvisation until the end. Un fortunately, the lyrics are essential to the song and Brian's vocals are missed.
The guitarist who never ceases to amaze me. Like other comments, I also hear Brian's voice in Jeff's playing here. For some reason, Jeff's song "Definitely Maybe" the orange album) compliments this really well.
That's why I like YouTube, you can tell the truth or lie like hell and not care whether it hurts anybody's feelings. You don't have to be politically correct. You can also bitch at anybody's comments without being sued. This is true as of 11-23-2010, enjoy the freedom, I don't know how long it will last.
it's just too bad that the poster didn't let us hang in for Surfin' USA.....THAT was just as amazing as this song......and to venereal billy or whatever your name is, if we don't want to read the comments, well most of us learned how to NOT read long before we learned to read, so take your meanness and negativity and put it where the surf is not up........Dude.
I love this song and the band too but but this is rendition is about the most boring one I've heard. Sounds like supermarket background music. Jeff really sticks to the notes, which is nice but then he goes off into a solo which should have been great, that's where Jeff Beck should have shined, but didn't. Whatever...
@sallybeal Jes...man, What the hell is wrong with playing the actual melody. Beck is playing it with GREAT feeling and it doesn't sound Supermarket music. What makes a great instrumentalist is not how many damned notes somebody can squeeze in and around the real melody, but by how well he or she plays how ever much that person choses to play. The intervals involved in the original melody are so interesting anyway. Why overkill it ? This is beautiful.
@BeachBoysGuy1 I said nothing about playing fast or squeezing in notes. I love this song more than most other songs. I just find electric guitar melodies like this expressionless. Just my opinion. Maybe I miss the words. You feel beauty, I'm bored by this one.
@rts4761 Why not? The greatest living rock guitarist taking on one of the finest compositions in popular music in the past 50 years. Sounds like a perfect match to me. And the results were amazing.
you all know nothing. this is a tribute to Brian Wilson not a celebration of Jeff Beck. he is honoring the writer of the notes. I think it is a wonderful interpretation, if you know the words as well as I do to this song, then his guitar seemingly sings the words not just guitar music. show some class and manners as one great pays tribute to another. you all suck your negativity sucks.
I don't understand all the people complaining about this rendition. Beck does a really excellent rendition of the vocal line, almost like a concert musician interpreting a classical piece, and then when it goes into the Child is the Father of the Man choral bit he does a nice little exploration. It's a very nicely done rendition, and I suspect people just tuned out early because Beck wasn't going crazy from note one.
What is interesting is the musicians in Brian Wilson's band and their looks (awe) of Jeff's guitar playing. I bought this dvd (Tribute to Brian Wilson - Music-Cares) for $3.00 in the spring and this track stood out. Also worth seeing: Back Street Boys; Bare Naked ladies and Brian Wilson... his timing is right on...

I think the guitar playing is a little too "show-offy" (especially in the tag) to suit the mood of the melancholy and apocalyptic Surf's Up.
