@JoeGibb On the tour Mikey always did his bass solo as intro to this tune.. They edited it to shorten it to probably fit on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert back then..
@belledame3: agreed totally! VH version is really good, despite all the high pitched screaming. but have u seen Linda's version from the Midnight Special? THAT IS AMAZING!!!!! might just be my favorite music video i have come across on here. words can't describe it, just gotta see it.
classic video. would be great to get a hold of the unedited original film to synchronize the music better with the video. Led Zeppelin had the same problem with song remains the same.
@DLRisVH got that right! And Van Halen accepts no BS!! Their music is so real that it beggars to believe how & why this band never got the respect when they first exploded on the scene. I guess a lot of people especially the media just didn't 'get it', musicians (noted guitarists!) hated EVH because he changed everything the way the guitar sounds & is played!! Typical. But as Dave said back in the day "Van Halen is for the people!!"
That solo is so crazy good it should be illigal! Especially at 2:05. Its that falling down the stairs and landing on your feet thing that Eddie does. Roth has a bit of a Robert Plant thing going on.
@lhbox83 dont know if u play guitar or not,i do and know technically what he's doing, but u have described that spot on.....makes me think of the sound effects to some old platform games on the commodore 64.....its best to step away from what u know about music and explain them in the simplest form...pure expression, and that is what music is about really isnt it?me and my mate who dont play has said the same sort of shit...oh that sounds like this is happening!
Listen to Mike and Ed's harmonies here. Ed's playing and Dave's craziness always get the spotlight but Van Halen harmonies are amazing. There are some songs where they really stand out like in Dancing in the streets,Dance the night away, and in this song here. When 2011 comes around were blessed with a new VH cd I really hope they put allot into harmonies again. No Mikey, but Wolfie ain't too bad I guess,he sings good and high. Will go grat with Eddie's with low harmonies.

Twenty years of love, laughter, travel and fun. A great family with two wonderful boys and a kick ass dog. All that and the bitch sacraficed it all for two ugly fucks. Mariska You're No Good!
Not so. Actually the music here is a slightly modified version of a Van Halen original called "Down In Flames". They were planning on including that one on Van Halen II, and for unknown reasons, changed their minds and went with this cover, but kept most of the musical elements anyway.
@Adnoydal , who gives a shit what you think, you welfare , trolling, unemployed abortion that survived. Go troll Wham video's , thats more you. Fuck the Noyd! EVH is God
don't get me wrong -i love vh,eddie is amazing, especially with dave.but hackett originated alot of these guitar techniques-check out all ofthe songs from 1972 live stuff on youtube
At 1:49 the magic begins. This is the 1st time Ed unleashed the flurry of muted harmonics while pulling off to an open string and rolling his picking hand down the neck. What a killer technique!
Also, to cut Dave a little slack on the 07' tour, it is probably quite a bit easier, for the guitarist than the lead singer, when it comes to doing the songs, (many from 30 yrs ago), with the same amount of enthusiasm that you had when you were 25, at 55. That is a big part of why Plant didn't want to do a Zep tour, and Page did.
I went to the 07' show, and the sound was good, but I would have preferred Michael Anthony. Personally I didn't get the feeling that Dave was 100% into it either. Not that I expected the 1982 VH, but he just seemed a little laxed like he was just going through the motions. On a positive though, they played almost all of the good tunes, and Alex/Eddie still kick ass. Alex esp. For hard rocknroll amongst the older bands, Sabbath, who has 10yrs on VH is STILL "F" in amazing to see in concert!
I would never call DLR a bum. Like I posted, maybe a little "Lax" at the 07' show, but back in the day, DLR played more of a role in the success of VH then Eddie did. Post Roth stuff doesn't hold a candle to the Kick Ass material they put out between 78-82'. That dude was a front man. All due respect, you weren't even alive when they were the shit. Roth was as big, if not bigger than Eddie.
Manager Noel Monk has a vault of this stuff, and little has ever been released to the public.. The band like most young bands of the day, signed away everything for a record contract. guess they didn't think about anything happening past the age of 30.
Bands got virtually nothing on record sales. Even after VHII was out, Eddie said they were all still virtually broke. Record comps cry about us downloading. Screw 'em. If your a good band, come to my city and I'll give YOU the $100 ticket cost.
Wow, never saw this one before, and in good quality too! Still, I would like to meet the person who edited these early vh films and slap them in the most humliating way.
If I were to be reincarnated, I would like to be Alex Van Halen playing this concert everyday for the rest of my/his life. Plus maybe some apres concert pussy, then back on stage. And maybe a few sets of tennis in between the other two things.

I came in hoping, and with an open mind, but I have to say I am totally bummed. Linda's version is a classic and VH should NOT have redone it. They are missing the whole vibe of the song.
Betty Everette originally did the song & Ronstadt did not kill it. There wasn't too many women like Linda in the 70's. Zeps Babe Im Gonna Leave You was also done by Joan Baez & originally done by someone else. It is common throughout rocknroll!
yeah i was just saying that to the loser that came on to this video that was criticizing. i have never heard the original so i can't say, but this is a good song. and i like it like this.
It's funny cuz Ronstadts version was hugely popular and played a lot on the radio in the 70's, but Halen "did" make it their own. I almost saw Halen in 82', I was 14. That's when they really kicked ass. I know 1984 was good, but personally I preferred the hard edge over the "IMO" faggoty jump, with the synthesisers. My old room-mate was 12 yrs older than me, and was from Pasadena, CA. She saw VH at backyard party's in the early/mid 70's.
yeah they were bad ass back in the day. but i think that diver down and 1984 were both proof that roth was the faggot of the band. because jump's synths were cool, but the only queer there was him, walkin around in assless chaps and shit. even eddie who dressed sorta wild never did that.
They made it thier own and the song rocks. It is a matter of opinion who's version is better, my Dad likes the Linda Ronstand version better, but thinks this version is great. VH still has the emotion and incorps a great rock vibe and sound. Must covers are so similiar to the original, VH takes the song and van halenizes it, that is true way to cover a song. You want a Pop girly listen to the ronstand cover, you want rock, listen to the VH cover..
Everybody has their taste - as for me this song just rocks - it's one of the most powerful songs I've heard. Ed's solo is just incredible. If you play guitar you will really appreciate the job they did on this song - and of course Michael Anthony's voice (highs) is Fantastic!
This is a terrible version! Linda is way better! Van halen lost the melody and the rhythm! And the screaming does not help! This song should not have been recorded by them!
Now, why do you have to take it to a level of personal attack? I have the right to my opinion about this video, as do you. But this forum was not intended to bash eachother. You need to keep some respect in your words. Otherwise you look like an idiot.
And by the way, if you want to go there...
How would you know that I take it up the ass: only my gay lovers know that!

Are you fucking joking?! Have you no taste?! This is a terrible version of what is usually a great song. It would take a band as terrible as Van Halen to fuck it up.
how can you say VH is terrible? how can you even say they're average? you're the one with no taste. every cover VH did was better than the original. face the facts.
'face the facts'? What facts? Cite your sources. You don't know what I listen to, you only know one band I've dissed. Anybody who defends this song is a sad, pathetic moron.
There are not facts in music; but to argue VH has not taken a few covers to the next level is pretty funny and ignorant. I have the Linda Ronstand COVER and it is good; I happen to like the VH cover more. It has all elements and emotion of the Original version but put into a rock format. Also it is live not a studio recording. I defend it and if it makes me a pathetic moron I am still looking down at you. Ok, you can resume listening to Billy Don't be a Hero or Run Joey Run
Hey that was a great response you wrote to me in my comments. Insightful and articulate... By the way IMO the videos you watch are lame, as in Wham, Dead or Alive, Peter Allen meet the Bay City Rollers, archies lame. I understand your opinon now ;)
Totally KICK FUCKIN ASS!!! Was Clearly the Best Band in their day!!For you youngsters that was a cover from Linda Ronstadt. Hear her version and then realize the power of ROCK
How can anybody listen to something as incredible as David Lee Roth era Van Halen (at which point they were easily the greatest band the world had ever seen), the turn around not hate Sammy Hagar. He fucking ruined this incredible, well oiled machine that we all know and love as Van Halen.
Take out the lead singer, still a great band. Take out the drummer, still a great band, take out the bass player, still a great band. Take out Eddie Van Halen, no band.
@chris14bylow roth's voice & the word amazing should never be used in the same sentence. he was perfect for the band. he had a very unique voice, delivery, & stage presence is unmatched. but his singing voice is not close to being on par with geoff tate, tany harnell, rob halford, ronnie dio, or paul shortino. if you think roth's voice is "amazing", how would you describe those guys voices?
This shows VH as the great VOCAL group that they were. LOTS of 3 part harmony. Michael on TOP. THEIR sound. His anybody even aked them if Wolf sigs? If he does, than he will EARN the gig. If he does'nt , I will be dissapointed. I'm going. I payed $320 for a seat.
Eddie´s guitar used to be light in the dark! As anyone can here. Let us see this time, if his son Wolfie on bass can back him to spark back: 2007 tour with Diamond Dave.
If the goddamn tour must be delayed in order for Eddie to get his shit together (which is fine, as long as he DOES) then the boys need to plunder the vaults and put out the fucking DVD's with this show, Oakland 81 and whatever else they got in the can.
This was from when? 1979? People didn't know to make of this kid tapping on a fretboard and making all these wild noises. And, it only got better. Get clean, Edward, we miss you.
i wish i was a alive to see this concert. this in my opinion is Van Halen in its prime, they're young and fresh, Dave isn't drunk and sings all the words, Ed seems completely natural, Alex is fired up, Mike's having a blast as usual, and it sounds fantastic.
There were three promos for the VHII Album. Bottums Up, Dance The Night Away, You're No Good. This one becam the bootleg of the three because either no one liked it, or no one released it publicly.
Great cover of the Linda Rondstadt classic!!! Dave sounds great, Ed's playing is beautiful, ditto for Al and Mike. VH is to be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony in New York City in mid-March. Hopefully Dave will be there.
best vh cover ...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Are you fucking joking?! Have you no taste?! This is a terrible version of what is usually a great song. It would take a band as terrible as Van Halen to fuck it up.
Jacorner 3 years ago
how can you say VH is terrible? how can you even say they're average? you're the one with no taste. every cover VH did was better than the original. face the facts.
fromage777 3 years ago
You're very sad, I weep for you.
'face the facts'? What facts? Cite your sources. You don't know what I listen to, you only know one band I've dissed. Anybody who defends this song is a sad, pathetic moron.
Jacorner 3 years ago

How can anybody listen to something as incredible as David Lee Roth era Van Halen (at which point they were easily the greatest band the world had ever seen), the turn around not hate Sammy Hagar. He fucking ruined this incredible, well oiled machine that we all know and love as Van Halen.
VHOBSESSED78 3 years ago
Take out the lead singer, still a great band. Take out the drummer, still a great band, take out the bass player, still a great band. Take out Eddie Van Halen, no band.

David Lee Roths voice is amazing
chris14bylow 3 years ago 12

Superb. VH were so good in the early days.

Eddie´s guitar used to be light in the dark! As anyone can here. Let us see this time, if his son Wolfie on bass can back him to spark back: 2007 tour with Diamond Dave.

You always here about Eddie's tone on the first album but I think VHII was leaps above VHI tone wise. He nailed the studio tone live here too....

Where the FUCK has this video been hiding?
If the goddamn tour must be delayed in order for Eddie to get his shit together (which is fine, as long as he DOES) then the boys need to plunder the vaults and put out the fucking DVD's with this show, Oakland 81 and whatever else they got in the can.

This was from when? 1979? People didn't know to make of this kid tapping on a fretboard and making all these wild noises. And, it only got better. Get clean, Edward, we miss you.
Theo80126 4 years ago
i wish i was a alive to see this concert. this in my opinion is Van Halen in its prime, they're young and fresh, Dave isn't drunk and sings all the words, Ed seems completely natural, Alex is fired up, Mike's having a blast as usual, and it sounds fantastic.
