As far as what the Fed actually DOES, it is usually to counteract the stupid fiscal policy that the president and congress implement. In todays case, for example, they are pursuing rapid expansionary policy to inflate the money supply so that it will be easier for people with forclosing homes to pay off their debts, and so solve the mortgage crisis.
G. Bush pursued expansionary supply-side economics, which is awesome in theory, except for the fact that it doesn't work.
I believe that I am neither, seeing as how I just finished a course on Macro and Microeconomics.
Monetarists believe that economic stability can only be achieved by increasing the money supply by 3-5% a year, and that the market will correct itself. The reason for the expansion is because we have an expanding economy, and if no money was added to the money supply, as businesses and population increased, there wouldn't be enough currency to go around, and the dollar would continuously deflate.

In case you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic. We need more centralized state governments to allow for more individualization and less board spectrum government. We wouldn't have a flexible money supply if it was backed. That would make the money supply very tight, inflate the price of precious metals, and drive up interest rates horribly.
Hahahah! Do you know what the federal reserve is? Well it isn't a big pile of money.
The only reason that the fed can control the interest rates as it is is because our money is backed by nothing. That way, you can change how much money is in the market in a safe and easy way. If we had it backed by hold, we'd be required to purchase gold in order to expand the economy, which could make money vastly more expensive to produce. That would NOT lower government spending.
Okay, that movie is so economically skewed, it isn't even funny. The facts that they present are absolutely false, and in the future, don't get your "information" from youtube consipracy theorists. That video was wrong on so many levels, it isn't even funny.
And the reason why we need to continuously expand the money supply isn't because we have debt, it's because we have an EXPANDING ECONOMY.
Geeze, at least read up on some basic economic principles before you go spouting this crap.
You are misinformed or ignorant. Please hit the books or web to learn about our monetary policy. You can start with the NY feds web-site. Also, examine the events of 1944 through 1971. Good luck.
we need reform america! kick those lobbyists out first thing, then cut down on the military industrial complex, quit printing money backed by nothing. stop spending is the first rule to financial recovery, we obviously cant stop spending but we can cut down tremendously. and we cant solve all the countries problems in 4 or 8 or even 10 years but we atleast can get one thing solved at a time, which is what we should be doing. solving one major issue every time we elect a new pres.
I would guess he thinks Bush invented superfluous spending since he has run up a national faster than all the presidents before him combined. Usually the next argument is, "Well we have a war going on" er how many wars were there in the 20th century and yet even adjusted for inflation he trumps the whole last century in bankrupting us... wake up people...
This cock took 1:03 to tell me the economy is bad? He said one point that can be expressed with a single sentence, and dragged it out for 1:03. And really, "superfluous"? He probably just learned that in college and felt like using it to sound like he knows what he's talking about.
retard - wow, I pity the americans who aren't retarded when you have to put up with morons like this. How republican - bitch and use derogatory language to deride other people
I for one hope the US crumbles as we're all better off without the American president in the world driver's seat
Yeah, so lets vote in a Democrat, because they aren't Socialist or notorious government expanders. Neither Obama nor Clinton want to bankrupt America with national health care....... I can't believe this kid thinks Bush invented superfluous spending... Academia is embarrassing.
I agree whole-heartedly with your comments, except that it's been going on since long before Bush became president. Neither party seems to have any interest in addressing even dicretionary spending, much less the bigger issue of entitlements. And Hillary, Barrack or McCain, whoever becomes the next president, will likely only make things worse.

Our recession has only to do with two facts. 1 plp are not increasing in wages as fast as our expenditures are increasing. Americans spend more than they make due to credit banks will give us. We do have to have more control of our governement. If gas prices keep raping us with no alternative fuel source in site our economy will not turn itself around. I own a business and see it's effects and have to continue to raise my prices to cover my continued increased costs all caused by fuel increase
Of course, SCLARK, people didn't vote for Ron Paul. He's flaky. Believes in the friggin' gold standard. As if we can (and should ) go back to the 1890s or wheneve, when the government was small and all was right in the world. As if other countries that are advancing used that brain dead nostalgia.

Americans continue to vote for big spending politicians who promise everything but the moon to get elected. All they end up doing is moving this nation ever closer to bankruptcy and third world status. Ron Paul would have ended the trillion dollar war and the IRS, but Americans soundly rejected both of those ideas in favor of more big government spending.

Just think about the money we could have saved if we haven't went to war. Trillions of dollors over 5 years with more on the way if some people have there way. If you don't see a link between the war and our ecomony then you are blind.
I couldn't agree more. First thing we do is we arm the General Accounting Office. Heavily. They can kick in the doors at Blackwater and KBR, "accidentally" shoot a couple of suits to let everyone know that they're serious, then bring in the accountants.
"Okay, Mr. Jones, let's put it like this... yesterday you had nine million apples, but today you only have seven million. Where did the two million apples go?"
So yes, jonah, the president has the power to create a recession. Cutting taxes while pissing away almost a trillion dollars in Iraq, that won't pave the road to prosperity.
FAIR TAX!! The politicians don't want you to know about it. The "Fair Tax" takes away all the 'superfluous' power the Rep's and especially Dem's. That's why they turn your head the other way and toss you a rebate bone every now and then.
dude bush didnt create the recession. he has no power to do that. its just the fed res keeps jacking up the interest rate which helps us in the beginning but screws us in the long run
Nice Econ 101 lesson jonah. After you take 102 next semester you may want to revise your post. Out of control federal spending and increasing debt service are tanking the US dollar, which is sending the cost of imports to record levels. Imports like, oh say, oil, which does more than just fill up the moped you ride to your job at the campus bookstore. High energy costs are squeezing all industries, resulting in poor profits, lower stock prices and layoffs. Thus, recession. Class dismissed.

uhm...that can easily be remedied you jerk. I'm surprised you know how to use your spell checker, why not try reading a book lame ass. It's scary to think of how many people you probably have buried under your house, lamer.
Tax cut opponents often claim that the 1993 tax increase helped restore growth and deserves credit for today's budget surpluses. This notion is contradicted by Clinton Administration budget documents. In early 1995, nearly 18 months after enactment of the 1993 tax increase, the Clinton Administration's Office of Management and Budget projected budget deficits of more than $200 billion for the next 10 years. 6 Clearly, events after that date.
Funny you say that Nydro, considering Clinton did an execellent job handling the issues with that money and our current president (and his cabinet) have done nothing but piss off the rest of the world. For a party that prides itself on "Foriegn Policy", it sure does ruin our country's credibility. But, I have a really good idea... stop abbreviating administration as "adim". You'll sound more intelligent.
yeah ok that's why the 90's when looked back upon in retrospect are considered a time of economic prosperity, let's look at the economy now after 8 years of bush, everything has gone completely to hell. Come on now let's look at the facts here Clinton did a great job economically for our country that much cannot be denied.
hromanchik22- A presidential administration lives off of the actions of the prior administration! Clinton and his ilk enjoyed Bush41 successes. Billy boy, while getting his wanky spanked, new about Osama Bin Laden, sold secrets to China, freed drug dealers and had people killed, in my humble opinion! He was worse than Carter, well, almost!
Hey, the US already owes China our souls. We are in debt up to our eyeballs, and there is no possible way to repay it even if we do cut back tremendously.
Even if China has our souls we have their bodies. True they could really hurt us if they wanted to, but not without killing themselves either. So it's kinda ok.
READ THIS . YOU WILL BE KISSED ON THE NEAREST POSSIBLE FRIDAY. TOMORROW WILL BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE . SEND THIS TO OVER 5 VIDEOS IN 143 MINUTES WHEN YOUR DONE PRESS F6 AND YOUR CRUSHES NAME WILL APPEAR ON THE SCREEN IN BIG LETTERS
My favorite part about this video is that the Economics Major from Penn State specifically cited George W. Bush's Administration as the cause of our nation's debt as if his administration alone was the root and cause of our recession. It had nothing to do with the FED's destruction of our national currency over the past thirty years or frivolous military engagements such as Desert Storm, Clinton in Bosnia, and their ilk. No, sir. It was Bush!
Bush senior did desert storm. Same family. As for bosnia, that was EXTRAORDINARILY minor. We intervened in a european genocide. US currency was stable/historically high under Clinton against the Euro, the Canadian Dollar, Yen and Pound. The FED has always benefited some, but it did not engage in the wholesale slaughter of our currency till this Bush administration printed so much money we had to classify the amount of currency we were printing due to Iraq, and the new corporate welfare.
Blame a single administration. Mind you, I'm not defending the administration, but I see your pessimistic blame game as the status quo of the American people and it's sickening. Let's blame Bush. That'll make it better. Instead of trying to understand why and how our economy failed, we put it all on Bush "'cause he's stupid". Mind you, that's hardly true; however, he is corrupt neo-conservative. And we borrowed money from China for Iraq. Clinton started the borrowing from China trend.
It's the rebellious college student mindset. You know, they're independent of their parents, so they can finally think for themselves (ahem, have politicians that target these 'freethinkers' brainwash them).
Why don't you respond to college students' ideas instead of attacking them with ad-hominem caricatures that merely betray your prejudices? I'm sick of dumb macho idiots infantilizing an entire segment of society, when in fact everyone agrees that it's a noble thing to try to get yourself an education. Here we have a student of economics suggesting we spend less, because in his opinion that's the thing to do. And you make him into a shrill moma's boy wanna be rebel? How? It's all in your head.
Semantics. I don't care who did what where. I'm pointing out blaming just the current administration is a political tactic to gain popularity from the nation's ire. By the way...how much did Bosnia cost? I never could find that out. My guess is more than I alone have paid in taxes in my life and I think that's a lot of money. Money's size is really a matter of perspective. Hell, look at the kids complaining about their student loans on the other videos of this kind.
The real issue is that banks and lenders gave money to people who never had the ability to pay them back. Families leveraged everything so that they can "keep up with the Joneses" with SUVs, McMansions, and Tiffany's dance lessons. It is the epitomy of the spoiled generation who refuse to budget and live within their financial means. Lenders were also greedy for letting these people borrow.
I think we need to get the geotene out and scare the poloticians into taking back our economic polocy. The not so Federal Reserve is the most important branch of the government and there are NO (NNNOOO) checks on its power.
You don't slam your hand in a door and ask why your hand hurts unless your deff dumb and blind. Thats the media for you.
** Vote No Barack Hussein Obama. Obama said Working Class American's don't matter. Wright (Obama's Pastor) Said the United States Deserved 9-11. Well Obama did listen to this guy for 20YEARS, Obama Must have learned something from him. No Wonder Obama does Not salute the American Flag because his Pastor Told Obama not to. SAVE AMERICA AND VOTE NO OBAMA!
Obama Can't!!!
America Rise Aganist this racist and VOTE NO OBAMA!
Martin Luther King railed against the US involvement in Vietnam and said some very very angry things about a racist, imperialistic America.
Abraham Lincoln said that the Civil War was God's wrath for slavery, and that we all deserved the punishment. Were there any shrill and idiotic complaints about that?
No. Because we were adults back then. We have degenerated into a nation of utter crybabies incapable of critical moral thought. And by the way, you aren't fooling anyone, neocon.
bud, hate to break it to you, but the civil war was 150 years ago, theres no more slavery, oh, and by the way Lincoln was the first REPUBLICAN, he hated libs just like osama
back in the early 1900's the two parties switched ideals. Lincol might have been a repuclican by name but his values were those of modern day Dems not the republicans. Sorry man.
Jeff, I really don't think it's a matter of "superfluous" spending; I think it is, quite frankly, a matter of incorrectly allocating expenses - which is definitely going on. The Iraq War is a complete violation of economic principle, but I wouldn't say it's a matter of how much is being spent; rather, where and how it's being spent.
Interesting you mention worthless spending, Our government does indeed spend tons of money on a war that we should have never went into. So many lifes lost, Our soldiers donated to RON PAUL more then any other republican canidate and he's second in donations to Obama but only because he has less name recognition. There's a message spreading in our country, Freedom is more powerful then out mainstream media will ever realize, More people are waking up to the fact that RON PAUL is for our freedom
I have an idea! How about borrowing trillions more from China and then sucking up to them after they sell us products made out of contaminents because we're to scared they'll cut us off.
there is so much atrocious spending from local govt. to state to federal it is insane. this will always be an issue to a point but the spending is basically criminal it is so bad.
Do yourselves a favor - DON'T VOTE. They ALL suck, they ALL suck BAD, and they're nothing more than puppets who will fuck you in the ass with any chance they get.
By not voting, you're showing the government that you've lost faith in them. You're also signaling that the entire voting process we have in the country is absolute shit. You know how much money each candidate in Britain is allowed to spend? $10k. Think about it.
Recession? Dude we are well on our way to a depression. Our elected officials have been distracting us with low level social problems, while they spend billions on god only knows what. We are much more taxed than ever before, and the service we receive from government has decreased. Too many politicians have entrenched themselves into public service, and have done a horrible job. The biggest problem I see is that they can't be held accountable. They're immune!
Why just ever since the Bush administration? Surely, G. B. has spent billions, but so has basically every other president. Why does no one mention his father or Bill Clinton for heaven's sake?
Also, I basically think it is impossible to get out of debt at this point. The USA is over $10 TRILLION in debt. How is the government supposed to pay off that when it doesn't have any of its own money? The only way is to get rid of unconstitutional government programs: public education, welfare...
No offense, but we can stand around and speculate all we want. How bout you make a video and tell us STUDENTS how we can change the world with our ideas, and get involved with ways we can fix our country? I'm tired of listening to bureaucratic red tape mumbo jumbo. Those Congressman shouldn't be making important decisions that are going to affect our lives years from now. Thats why we're in a recession, slumping economy, horrible housing market, etc?
Hey Colemic wake up we have had a war on poverty for over 40 years now and all we have done is create more welfare recipients. You are probably not old enough to remember "The Great Society" and the Civil Rights Act of 1965
The biggest expenditure of this adminastration was on medicade. I agree we dont need to waste money this way. The dems were pissed that it wasnt enough.
what a fucking fag we are not in a recession if he knew the definition of a recession he would know that output has to fall. don't think it has, has it???
Amen, brotha! Just a thought, but what if we paid our congress as much as the average income in their state? I think that's fair. That'd cut down on the budget some. Forbid gifts of any kind to be given to anyone in congress or their staff (if I'm not mistaken, it's allowed now?) and use our oil reserves to sell to third world countries (instead of...i dunno...dangerous technology). While we're at it, why isn't someone doing something about this oil monopoly?
to ease the recession we need to export more goods and import more money. BUT that would weaken other countries. If one country is in a state of prosperity then another country must suffer. It cant be evenly spread

GUITARESPKH02 3 years ago
As far as Zeitgeist...
1. The federal reserve does NOT loan money to the government, it buys government securities on the open market, which anybody over 18 can do.
2. 85-95% of the money generated by the reserve returns to the treasury, they DO NOT keep their profits.
3. The federal reserve is a Quasi-Public institution, it is owned by the people, and serves the people.
4. Borrowing on margin is illegal

we need reform america! kick those lobbyists out first thing, then cut down on the military industrial complex, quit printing money backed by nothing. stop spending is the first rule to financial recovery, we obviously cant stop spending but we can cut down tremendously. and we cant solve all the countries problems in 4 or 8 or even 10 years but we atleast can get one thing solved at a time, which is what we should be doing. solving one major issue every time we elect a new pres.

CJonesey01 3 years ago
This cock took 1:03 to tell me the economy is bad? He said one point that can be expressed with a single sentence, and dragged it out for 1:03. And really, "superfluous"? He probably just learned that in college and felt like using it to sound like he knows what he's talking about.

Americans continue to vote for big spending politicians who promise everything but the moon to get elected. All they end up doing is moving this nation ever closer to bankruptcy and third world status. Ron Paul would have ended the trillion dollar war and the IRS, but Americans soundly rejected both of those ideas in favor of more big government spending.

jonahamuhntiss69 3 years ago
Nice Econ 101 lesson jonah. After you take 102 next semester you may want to revise your post. Out of control federal spending and increasing debt service are tanking the US dollar, which is sending the cost of imports to record levels. Imports like, oh say, oil, which does more than just fill up the moped you ride to your job at the campus bookstore. High energy costs are squeezing all industries, resulting in poor profits, lower stock prices and layoffs. Thus, recession. Class dismissed.

and handed bush a surplus which that idiot spent, and it you haven't noticed we've been spending on credit ever since...
thecheney 3 years ago
Are you really that stupid? Stop drinking the Democrat Kool-Aid.
Myth : The Clinton tax increase boosted the economy in the 1990s and led to a budget surplus.
Fact: The Clinton tax increase delayed the economy's resurgence and had nothing to do with the budget surplus.
Nydro1337 3 years ago
Here's the proof
Tax cut opponents often claim that the 1993 tax increase helped restore growth and deserves credit for today's budget surpluses. This notion is contradicted by Clinton Administration budget documents. In early 1995, nearly 18 months after enactment of the 1993 tax increase, the Clinton Administration's Office of Management and Budget projected budget deficits of more than $200 billion for the next 10 years. 6 Clearly, events after that date.
Nydro1337 3 years ago
Funny you say that Nydro, considering Clinton did an execellent job handling the issues with that money and our current president (and his cabinet) have done nothing but piss off the rest of the world. For a party that prides itself on "Foriegn Policy", it sure does ruin our country's credibility. But, I have a really good idea... stop abbreviating administration as "adim". You'll sound more intelligent.
RedeGude 3 years ago 2
yeah ok that's why the 90's when looked back upon in retrospect are considered a time of economic prosperity, let's look at the economy now after 8 years of bush, everything has gone completely to hell. Come on now let's look at the facts here Clinton did a great job economically for our country that much cannot be denied.

The Federal Reserve needs to do something? No, we need to do something...
Abolish the FED!
rj5150 3 years ago
My favorite part about this video is that the Economics Major from Penn State specifically cited George W. Bush's Administration as the cause of our nation's debt as if his administration alone was the root and cause of our recession. It had nothing to do with the FED's destruction of our national currency over the past thirty years or frivolous military engagements such as Desert Storm, Clinton in Bosnia, and their ilk. No, sir. It was Bush!
thismindofmine 3 years ago
Bush senior did desert storm. Same family. As for bosnia, that was EXTRAORDINARILY minor. We intervened in a european genocide. US currency was stable/historically high under Clinton against the Euro, the Canadian Dollar, Yen and Pound. The FED has always benefited some, but it did not engage in the wholesale slaughter of our currency till this Bush administration printed so much money we had to classify the amount of currency we were printing due to Iraq, and the new corporate welfare.
mytube2048 3 years ago
Blame a single administration. Mind you, I'm not defending the administration, but I see your pessimistic blame game as the status quo of the American people and it's sickening. Let's blame Bush. That'll make it better. Instead of trying to understand why and how our economy failed, we put it all on Bush "'cause he's stupid". Mind you, that's hardly true; however, he is corrupt neo-conservative. And we borrowed money from China for Iraq. Clinton started the borrowing from China trend.
thismindofmine 3 years ago
It's the rebellious college student mindset. You know, they're independent of their parents, so they can finally think for themselves (ahem, have politicians that target these 'freethinkers' brainwash them).
surrealitytl 3 years ago
Why don't you respond to college students' ideas instead of attacking them with ad-hominem caricatures that merely betray your prejudices? I'm sick of dumb macho idiots infantilizing an entire segment of society, when in fact everyone agrees that it's a noble thing to try to get yourself an education. Here we have a student of economics suggesting we spend less, because in his opinion that's the thing to do. And you make him into a shrill moma's boy wanna be rebel? How? It's all in your head.
mytube2048 3 years ago
in all fairness, desert storm was another bush and was probably necessary, and bosnia did not cost too much money
iblanco2 3 years ago
Hell, look at the kids complaining about their student loans on the other videos of this kind.
thismindofmine 3 years ago
The real issue is that banks and lenders gave money to people who never had the ability to pay them back. Families leveraged everything so that they can "keep up with the Joneses" with SUVs, McMansions, and Tiffany's dance lessons. It is the epitomy of the spoiled generation who refuse to budget and live within their financial means. Lenders were also greedy for letting these people borrow.
