I was wondering a couple things like why is there no stack on the back of the Erie for the rear engine to exhaust from and if the rear engine evewn worked or if they just coasted
If you look at the video of the triplex pulling the yellowstone you can see the stack at the back pointing down towards the track. This so you don't get passengers wet from the exhaust. All six engines do work and work very well. The reason the Triplex did not work out for the railroad was because the boiler could not keep up with enough pressure to run all six cylinders for a long enough time.
ok thanks for the info on the exhaust but i was saying the reason the boiler could not keep up enough pressure was because the third engine did not draft through the smoke box so it reduced the draft on the fire so it was using the steam by it was not returning as the draft like the other engines
It was a failed experiment in an attempt to be able to pull more loads of coal in one trip. Apparently, it damaged the track it ran on. Its a pretty cool looking engine, though!
The problem of the Triplex was that the couplers used around the time it was built was not strong enough to stand the weight of the load when pulled so the engines were used as helper egines
I read this too. But I think for slow speed up-grade slogging - which is what they were built for - they were fine. Maybe with a higher-than-scale boiler pressure, there is enough heat-energy in this model's boiler to supply six cylinder for fast running? Fabulous model engineering. US steam is tops.
I agree with the higher than scale boiler pressure helping because the reason they ran slow was because since the rear engine exhausted out of the stack on the back of the tender that reduced the amout of draft on the fire
Wow! Quite an engine. What kind of lubricators are you using. Does each cylinder have its own source for cylinder oil? I bet your feet get quite hot from that last pair of cylinders.
Holy steaming shit! An operational Triplex locomotive!!!!! I don´t care if it´s miniature or not!

I thought from what i have read triplexs really couldn't work well, how u got it to work in live steam is amazing.

Those things are huge. I have always wanted to install a ride on railway at my house, but the cost it just to high
