I agree with the poster that this was a major Allied failure. Had Patton not been off on a search for glory by capturing Palermo then perhaps he could have done something more useful such as trapping the Axis forces in Sicily.

The same thing happens 10 months later when the Germans are allowed to retreat from the Cassino postion as Mark Clark wanted the 'glory' of capturing Rome instead of prisoners and materiel.

The newsreel is from the beginning of September. News didn't move so fast as today.

17th of August 1943 is when the Germans retreated from Messina, thats over less than half a month for the news to get out, thats very unrealistic, no more than a day will the news be behind.
